But results from research evaluations do not establish a universal pass rate, prove that ChatGPT or any other model can reliably get through a live site’s defenses, or grant permission to collect that site’s data. For scraping, treat a CAPTCHA or denial as a policy outcome to handle—not a puzzle your production system should automatically evade.
What the latest studies show
CAPTCHA is a broad category, not one test. Results vary with the challenge, model, prompt, number of attempts, interaction method, and execution environment. The available evaluations therefore answer narrower questions than “Can AI beat CAPTCHAs?”

Taken together, the results show that visual novelty by itself is no longer a dependable guarantee that an automated system will fail. They do not show that every visual puzzle is solvable, or that solving one puzzle is enough to establish a stable session, pass other risk checks, or authorize scraping.
Can ChatGPT solve image CAPTCHAs?
The studies above do not establish a general pass rate for ChatGPT or for current commercial AI services as a whole. They evaluate particular research systems, model sets, and configurations. A model’s ability to recognize an image is also different from an agent’s ability to interact with a challenge and satisfy a site’s broader controls.

Why passing the puzzle may not get a scraper through
A CAPTCHA is only one possible layer in a site’s decision about a request. In a 2026 study, tested commercial solvers and LLM browser agents encountered defenses across several providers; the authors found that execution-environment authenticity could determine outcomes on non-interactive defenses, even when the tested agents’ interaction traces were nearly indistinguishable. That finding applies to their configurations, not every site or deployment.
Bot defenses can combine puzzle challenges with request, session, browser, and behavioral signals. Cloudflare’s documentation describes heuristic, JavaScript, and machine-learning detection engines, along with behavioral detection features. Its documented machine-learning system uses request, session, and browser features to produce a Bot Score on a 1–99 scale; availability varies by plan. Cloudflare says, “Cloudflare uses multiple detection engines because different bot types require different detection strategies.”

Cloudflare describes Turnstile as an alternative to CAPTCHA that can be embedded on sites not routed through Cloudflare and can work without showing a visitor a CAPTCHA. Its overview says the experience adapts to visitor and browser signals and uses non-interactive JavaScript challenges and other signals; its documentation also describes challenge-volume and solve-rate analytics. Google’s WAF integration documentation describes reCAPTCHA issuing an encrypted assessment token that a WAF can use with configured rules to allow, block, or redirect traffic to an interstitial. Listed integrations include Cloud Armor, Fastly Edge Compute, and Cloudflare Workers, with enforcement at the WAF layer.

If you have permission to collect the data, build a pipeline that can recognize and respect an access decision. A successful challenge response is not evidence of permission, and automating a solver does not change the terms under which a site permits access.

- Choose an authorized access path first. Prefer a documented API, data export, feed, or written arrangement where available. Confirm the permitted data, use, rate, and duration with the site owner.
- Identify the client accurately. Do not rotate identities or disguise the client to force access. Cloudflare’s May 2025 post proposed HTTP message signatures and request mutual TLS as ways for friendly bots and agents to identify themselves. The post described a closed beta at publication; verify current support and site-owner participation rather than assuming these mechanisms are universally deployed.
- Separate fetching from rendering, extraction, and policy handling. Keep transport and browser execution distinct from parsing and storage. Record status codes, redirects, challenge pages, consent states, and extraction failures so a denial page is not silently stored as ordinary content.
- Set explicit stop conditions. A challenge, denial, or repeated risk failure should create a visible outcome with bounded retries. Where appropriate, request site-owner approval or send the case for human review; do not retry indefinitely or change identities to get around a block.
- Monitor both collection quality and access outcomes. Track crawl success, challenge frequency, freshness, parser drift, and reports of false positives from authorized users. Use those signals to distinguish a broken parser or integration from a defense decision.
How site operators should think about defenses
Do not make visual puzzle difficulty the sole control. The evaluations show that some visual tasks are tractable for current multimodal systems, while other task types remain more difficult; neither fact supports a universal claim that CAPTCHAs are defeated or that one challenge will stop all automation. A layered design can put checks at the client, edge or WAF, and application layers, with an explicit route for review or recovery when legitimate traffic is challenged.
When comparing a CAPTCHA, bot-management, or WAF approach, consider the deployment point; the request, browser, session, and identity signals it uses; user friction and accessibility; false-positive handling and appeal paths; available challenge and request analytics; privacy and data processing; and integration effort and backend impact. Cloudflare’s and Google’s documented architectures illustrate different components and enforcement points, but the studies and product descriptions summarized here are not a head-to-head vendor test.

Agent identity is becoming part of the design
Bot defense is also evolving beyond the question of whether an agent can solve an image. In a May 15, 2025 Cloudflare post, Thibault Meunier and coauthors proposed cryptographic ways for legitimate bots and agents to declare who they are: “By using well-established cryptography techniques, we’re proposing a better mechanism for legitimate agents and bots to declare who they are, and provide a clearer signal for site owners to decide what traffic to permit.” The post describes proposals and a closed beta, not a universally deployed identity standard.

Google Cloud’s October 2025 post describes identifying and labeling agent activity, integrating identity protocols including SPIFFE and Web Bot Auth, and building controls to challenge or block agents based on identity and behavior. Its April 2026 announcement positions reCAPTCHA as a core bot-defense component in its Fraud Defense platform and describes an agent-aware trust platform. These are vendor descriptions of their products and direction, not independent evidence that a particular approach is effective in every deployment.

What is and is not established
- Some evaluated AI systems can solve visual CAPTCHA challenges, including previously unseen types in the Halligan evaluation.
- Performance differs across task types and execution setups. The studies do not establish one population-wide LLM CAPTCHA pass rate.
- Solving a puzzle is not the same as passing every layer of a site’s defenses, gaining persistent access, or having authorization to scrape.
- For permitted collection, use an authorized interface, identify the client honestly, make denials observable, and stop when access is refused.
- For site operators, CAPTCHA is one possible component of a layered system, not a complete bot-management strategy by itself.
