Yes—but a 2024 laboratory study did not turn whole fish guts and bones into plastic. It made a biodegradable material using gelatin extracted from fish-waste cartilage, combined with silk-derived sericin and cellulose nanocrystals. The researchers reported 85% degradation after 14 days in burial experiments, a result specific to their test—not proof of certified compostability or performance in other environments.
What the 2024 study made
Vijayakumar and colleagues described a lab-scale bioplastic made by combining sericin obtained from silk cocoons with gelatin obtained from fish waste, alongside nano-reinforced cellulose crystals. The paper’s abstract identifies the fish material as cartilage; “guts and bones” is therefore an imprecise shorthand for this study’s feedstock, not a description of the whole input. The study’s PubMed record reports that the formulation also included glycerol, vinegar, starch, sodium hydroxide and coloring agents.

The authors measured gelatin content at 58.25% in the fish waste they used. That is a measurement for the study’s material, not a general figure for fish waste. The ingredient list is not a validated home recipe: the abstract does not establish a consumer-safe, independently replicated process.

What the reported tests show—and what they do not
The study reports 85% degradation after 14 days in burial experiments. That result describes the researchers’ test conditions. It does not establish industrial or home compostability, behavior in ordinary soil or marine environments, or certification under a compostability standard.

The authors also report FTIR examination, thickness measurements and tensile testing. The abstract gives tensile strength as “27.64 MPa/psi,” with the units presented ambiguously. Because that figure cannot be interpreted confidently from the abstract, it should not be treated as a reliable, directly comparable strength value.
The paper identifies packaging, containment and disposable plastic materials as potential applications. Those are proposed uses, not evidence that the material is sold or performs like conventional packaging. The sources available do not establish food-contact approval, shelf life, manufacturing economics, commercial-scale production, standardized compostability or a comparative life-cycle advantage.

How this fits into wider efforts to use fishing waste
Other projects are exploring fish by-products for different materials; they should not be confused with the 2024 plastic formulation. The European Commission describes Gelatex Technologies OÜ using fish gelatin to make a leather-like nanofiber textile. The Commission also describes work extracting gelatin, chitin and chitosan from fish skins, bones and other by-products for biomedical and textile applications. These are separate applications, not evidence that the featured bioplastic is commercialized. The Commission’s 7 August 2025 account quotes project leader Dr Anu Kisand: “we consider this research to be one important step towards recognition that biowastes, including local fish wastes, contain valuable constituents, biopolymers among them, which can be processed into highly valuable new products.”
A separate European Commission initiative, EcoeFISHent, describes efforts to make products from fishing-industry waste, including gelatin for biodegradable and compostable food packaging. The initiative estimates that 7–10 million tonnes of commercial fisheries catches are discarded annually; that is its estimate, not a finding from the 2024 bioplastic study. What to look for before treating it as a plastic substitute
A lab result is an early material demonstration, not a buying or disposal guide. To assess future claims about fish-waste plastics, look for evidence on:
- Feedstock and formulation: which fish by-product is used and what other materials are included.
- Degradation evidence: the test method, duration and environment, plus any recognized certification.
- Performance: comparable mechanical and moisture tests for the intended use.
- Safety and deployment: food-contact status where relevant, shelf life and manufacturing scale.
- Environmental comparison: a comparative life-cycle assessment rather than biodegradation results alone.
The sources cited here do not establish a retail product made from this particular formulation, or enough comparable data to rank it against conventional plastics or other bioplastics.
