Irish sea moss can affect thyroid function in principle because it contains iodine, but the amount varies between products. Excess iodine may trigger or worsen thyroid problems, especially for people with Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s disease. Evidence reviewed here does not establish that Irish sea moss causes a specific set of stomach problems in humans.
Can Irish sea moss upset your stomach?
It is not established that Irish sea moss causes particular gastrointestinal symptoms in people. The Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) notes that human clinical research testing sea moss supplement claims is lacking; that means digestive benefits are unproven, too. It does not prove that nobody can feel unwell after taking a product, and the available evidence does not give a reliable rate of stomach symptoms attributable to sea moss. OPSS’s sea moss overview describes the limits of the evidence.

How could sea moss affect the thyroid?
The main concern is iodine, a nutrient the body needs but that can be harmful in excess. Iodine content in seaweed can vary considerably with growing conditions, so the words “sea moss” or a serving-size figure alone do not tell you how much iodine you are taking. OPSS identifies Irish moss as Chondrus crispus, a red seaweed native to the northern Atlantic, and cautions that supplement claims have not been adequately tested in human clinical research. OPSS

- WE BOTTLE WELLNESS: At Double Wood we provide pure, potent supplements that deliver exceptional value, all backed by careful sourcing and rigorous third-party testing
For context, Ireland’s Health Service Executive says adults need 140 micrograms (μg) of iodine a day. That is a general adult requirement—not a sea moss dose recommendation. The HSE also notes that prolonged high-dose iodine can change thyroid function. HSE: Iodine – Vitamins and minerals
Graves’ disease
People with Graves’ disease may be sensitive to excess iodine. The US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says high-iodine seaweed may cause or worsen hyperthyroidism in people with Graves’ disease. This guidance concerns iodine and seaweed generally; it is not proof that a particular Irish sea moss product caused an individual’s thyroid condition. NIDDK: Graves’ Disease

Hashimoto’s disease
NIDDK likewise says high-iodine seaweed may cause hypothyroidism or make it worse in people with Hashimoto’s disease. Anyone with Hashimoto’s should discuss sea moss and other iodine sources with a healthcare professional rather than assuming a supplement is safe based on its serving size. NIDDK: Hashimoto’s Disease
Why a product label does not tell the whole story
A 2025 record in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database lists one Irish sea moss capsule product as declaring 150 micrograms of iodine per two-capsule serving. That is the declaration for that listed product, not an average for sea moss, a guarantee about every batch, or a description of current formulations. Check the package you have: labels can change. - Organic Chrondus Crispus: because our Irish sea moss (Chondrus crispus) is organic, it has a higher mineral content than non-organic sea moss (Genus gracilaria) that cannot simulate natural concentrations. Our raw natural irish sea moss capsules preserve maximum beneficial compounds, like iodine and vitamin C.
- More Potent Dosage: Many brands use a ‘proprietary blend’. We think that’s just a way of hiding minimal amounts of ingredients. We’re transparent in formulating with 2250 MG of natural irish sea moss powder per serving—650% more than other brands’ 300mg.
- Higher bioavailability: Our formula comes in 4 capsules to hold maximum nutrients—2250mg natural Irish sea moss powder, 100g burdock root powder, 40mg bladderwrack, and 10mg black pepper to increase bioavailability significantly.
- Encapsulated, regulated dose: Unlike gel formulas, our encapsulated blend delivers the same potency in each capsule, preventing overconsumption. Encapsulation is also more convenient—our formula doesn’t need blending into a drink. With no flavor, encapsulated sea moss works for everyone.
- Stable vegecaps: Most other capsules are derived from animal ingredients. We encase our formula in vegan capsules so our nutrients stay active for longer. Our capsules are more stable than gelatine capsules, which disintegrate too fast when exposed to heat and moisture.
When reviewing a product, look for the named seaweed or species, the declared iodine amount per serving and the serving size. OPSS advises checking the ingredient identity and looking for heavy-metal testing. Seaweeds can contain arsenic, mercury or lead when grown in contaminated water, but these are possible category-level risks—not evidence that every sea moss product is contaminated. OPSS
Who should get medical advice before taking sea moss?
- People with Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s disease: Ask a healthcare professional about iodine exposure, including from seaweed supplements, because excess iodine may affect these conditions. Graves’ disease guidance and Hashimoto’s disease guidance
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding: Discuss sea moss with a healthcare professional. LactMed’s sea moss entry, revised February 15, 2026, describes iodine and potentially toxic heavy metals in sea moss, with levels depending on growing-water conditions. It recommends avoiding sea moss during breastfeeding unless iodine and heavy-metal levels have been shown low enough to be safe. LactMed also summarizes reports associating excess maternal iodine from seaweed with thyroid suppression in breastfed infants. LactMed: Sea Moss
- Anyone taking it and experiencing symptoms: Stop self-experimenting, keep the product label available, and ask a clinician whether the supplement could be relevant. Do not adjust prescribed thyroid treatment without medical advice.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Sea moss is marketed for digestion and thyroid support, but OPSS says human clinical research testing sea moss supplement claims is lacking. Current evidence cited here supports a plausible thyroid concern through variable iodine exposure, particularly for people with autoimmune thyroid disease. It does not establish that Irish sea moss causes a particular stomach-symptom profile, prove that all products cause thyroid problems, or provide a reliable rate for either outcome. OPSS

- Three Ingredients, Fully Disclosed: Each serving delivers 1000mg of wildcrafted Irish sea moss, 300mg of bladderwrack, and 200mg of burdock root, with every dose printed on the label instead of buried inside a proprietary blend, so if you already know what real sea moss should contain, you can check exactly what you are getting before the bottle even leaves the shelf, no vague blend totals, no guessing games
- No Fillers, No Binders: This formula contains zero synthetic fillers, binders, or artificial additives, manufactured in an FDA registered, GMP compliant facility and third party tested for purity, so if past supplements have left you unsure what was actually inside the capsule, this label tells you the full ingredient list up front, three named botanicals and nothing hidden behind them, batch after batch
- Two Small Capsules, Not A Horse Pill: If liquid oils and oversized tablets have never worked for you, these vegan capsules are sized to swallow easily with water at breakfast or dinner, no oily aftertaste and no gagging on a tablet built for someone else, just two capsules a day standing in for the sea moss, bladderwrack, and burdock root you would otherwise have to prepare yourself, morning or evening, whichever you prefer
- Built For A Daily Routine: Take two capsules daily with food to help your body absorb the minerals comfortably, a simple habit you can pair with breakfast or your evening routine without a special ritual attached, sea moss works gradually as a whole food source of nutrients rather than a fast acting formula, so most customers build it into the same routine as their morning coffee or vitamins, easy to remember every single day
- 90 Capsules, 45 Day Supply: At two capsules a day, one bottle covers a full 45 days, which works out to a lower cost per serving than buying raw sea moss, bladderwrack, and burdock root separately and preparing them yourself, no refrigeration required, just store the bottle in a cool dry place, so you can do the math once and know exactly what your daily mineral routine costs you, one bottle instead of three separate ingredients
