Inkscape can take over many Illustrator-style vector tasks, including creating and editing SVG artwork, and it is free, open-source software for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS. It is not a Photoshop replacement: Inkscape describes itself as a vector graphics editor and distinguishes that work from bitmap editing. A practical open-source workflow may use Inkscape for vectors and a separate raster editor for photos or pixel-based images.
What Inkscape can replace
Inkscape is a strong candidate when the work is primarily vector graphics: illustrations, diagrams, logos, and SVG assets. Its official format list includes SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. That list describes formats it can work with; it does not guarantee that every feature in a file will look or behave identically after import or export. For people leaving Illustrator, the key benefit is a vector-focused editor rather than a promise of a perfect one-for-one clone. You can create vector artwork and use common design formats, but complex Illustrator documents need to be checked rather than assumed compatible.

Why it does not replace Photoshop
Photoshop is commonly used for bitmap work such as editing photographs and manipulating pixel-based images. Inkscape’s official FAQ draws a distinction between vector graphics and bitmap editors such as Photoshop; it should not be treated as an all-in-one substitute for both applications. If your workflow includes substantial photo retouching or other raster editing, keep a separate raster editor alongside Inkscape. GIMP and Krita are examples of tools in the raster-editing or painting category, but the right choice depends on the work you need to do. The central point is to choose by task: Inkscape for vector work, and a suitable separate application for pixel-based work.
What to expect when importing Illustrator files
Inkscape can open or import AI and PDF files, but feature support is not full Illustrator fidelity. Its Illustrator-user guidance identifies several specific trouble spots: gradient meshes may be approximated as many small paths, some transparency modes do not work, and changes made during an SVG round trip may not appear as expected when the file is reopened in Illustrator. Before switching a shared workflow, test representative files rather than a simple sample. Include documents that use the effects, transparency, and editing steps your team relies on, then compare the imported result and any file returned to Illustrator. A format being supported is a starting point for compatibility, not a guarantee of a clean round trip.
Is it suitable for print PDFs?
Inkscape’s beginner guidance covers creating and editing PDFs, but cautions that dedicated desktop-publishing software such as Scribus may be preferable when a print PDF must be exact. The PDF guide is useful for understanding Inkscape’s PDF workflow. For demanding print production, check the output against the printer’s requirements and consider a desktop-publishing tool rather than assuming any vector editor will deliver perfect results.

Choose the workflow that fits the job

The sensible decision is not necessarily to replace two applications with one. If most of your work is vector design, Inkscape can replace much of Illustrator’s role while a raster editor handles image work. If your projects depend on Illustrator-specific effects or precise print output, validate those requirements before moving the workflow.
