No—not if your PC is running the encoder that sends the video to YouTube. When that computer sleeps, its encoding and upload stop, so the PC-originated stream cannot continue. To turn your computer off, move the prerecorded video and streaming job to a cloud service; otherwise, keep the computer running and awake.
Why a sleeping PC stops a YouTube livestream
A livestream from an encoder depends on an active source that encodes the video and sends it to YouTube. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, you connect an encoder using a stream URL and stream key, then start the encoder to go live. Sleeping the computer running that encoder interrupts the source; YouTube does not keep receiving the video just because the stream was already started. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
This applies whether your nature ambience video is a loop in streaming software or another PC-based encoder workflow. A stream key is a credential: do not share it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.
Ways to keep prerecorded nature video live

YouTube’s encoder documentation identifies cloud-based 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video as an alternative to running an encoder locally. A standalone hardware encoder is also a real streaming device, but it does not make a sleeping computer’s video source available: the video must reach the encoder independently. Check any provider’s current platform support, content and file requirements, controls, service terms and price before choosing it.

How to keep the stream running from your own PC
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Its general live-streaming guide also says users must be at least 16. Platform requirements can change, so review YouTube’s current live-streaming guide.
- Set up an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use the stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Keep the key private. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions for the current setup flow.
- Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for your selected resolution and frame rate. Do not assume a higher bitrate is better if your upload connection cannot sustain it.
- Protect upload headroom. YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth equal to the total stream bitrate plus 20% headroom. Other devices and shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream; disruptions can break it. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start a test stream, check the YouTube preview, then monitor audio, video and stream health. For a nature ambience video, confirm that the loop transitions cleanly and that any audio remains present at the intended level. YouTube recommends testing and checking stream health; an unattended stream should not be treated as guaranteed uninterrupted.
- Prevent sleep and keep the setup operating. Set the PC not to sleep while streaming, keep the encoder running, and ensure the video file remains accessible. The PC and network connection must stay available for the entire period you want the stream to run.

What DVR and archives do—and do not—do
YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause, rewind and resume a live stream; it does not keep the encoder running if its source stops. YouTube warns DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Separately, its encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan viewer playback and archive expectations separately from how the stream itself stays live: YouTube’s DVR guidance and encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshooting: common reasons the stream stops
- The stream ends when the PC sleeps: the local encoder has stopped. Keep the PC awake for a PC-originated stream, or move the prerecorded stream to a cloud service.
- The encoder disconnects or YouTube reports poor health: check upload capacity against the stream bitrate, allowing YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; check for competing network use and interruptions.
- The stream does not appear live: confirm the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are entered correctly, and the YouTube preview and health status show an incoming feed. If the key may have been exposed, replace it.
- Video or audio quality is unstable: compare the encoder’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations, then test again on the connection that will carry the stream.
- The stream is live but viewers cannot rewind or find an archive: DVR availability and automatic archiving are separate YouTube behaviors, with limitations for longer streams; neither substitutes for a running source.
Copyright and content checks for ambience streams
Before streaming a nature recording, confirm you have the rights to both the video and every audio element, including music, sound effects and recordings made by someone else. A video being labelled “ambience” or being prerecorded does not itself establish permission to stream it. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and encoder setup are separate from whether particular content is authorized; review the rights for your specific material before going live.

Running the stream locally avoids a cloud-service subscription but keeps your PC and network operating and requires testing and monitoring. A hosted service shifts the ongoing encoding and delivery away from your home setup; compare its current price and terms against your expected stream duration and the cost of keeping equipment running. A hardware encoder also needs power, a network connection and an independently available source, so it is not a sleep setting for the PC.
