Can I Set Up Guest Wi-Fi? How to Enable It Safely

Most routers and mesh systems with guest Wi-Fi let you enable a separate network in an app or settings page. Here’s how to set it up and check its access controls.

Yes. If your router or mesh system supports guest Wi-Fi, you can usually switch it on in its app or settings page, give it a separate network name and password, then save. Guests can use that network without receiving your household’s main Wi-Fi password. What they can reach on your home network depends on the router, its mode, and its settings.

What a guest Wi-Fi network does—and what it does not guarantee

A guest network gives visitors a separate way to connect to the internet. It can also provide an added layer of separation between visitors’ devices and your household’s primary Wi-Fi. Microsoft recommends using guest Wi-Fi for visitors when the router supports it, and also suggests it for non-essential smart devices that only need internet access (Microsoft’s wireless-connection safety guidance).

Do not assume that every guest network blocks every kind of access. Isolation behavior varies by router, firmware, and operating mode. Some networks prevent guests from reaching household devices; some can allow access to selected shared devices; and some can isolate guest devices from one another. A guest network is a useful separation measure, not a guarantee against every network threat.

Check support before replacing your router

Look in your router’s app or administration interface for a setting called “Guest Wi-Fi,” “Guest Network,” or similar. Router and mesh families such as TP-Link Deco, NETGEAR Nighthawk, and Google Wifi or Nest Wifi document guest-network features, but availability and controls depend on the specific model and software version. Check the manual or support page for your exact device before assuming a menu or feature is available.

Set up guest Wi-Fi in your router or mesh app

The exact labels differ by product. These official examples show the kinds of steps to look for:

Google Home

  1. Open Google Home and go to Wi-Fi > Devices > Network settings > Guest Network.
  2. Enable the guest network, choose a name and password different from your main network, and select any shared devices you want guests to access.
  3. Save the settings. Google’s guide is Create, edit & share a Guest Wi-Fi network.

TP-Link Deco

  1. In the Deco app, go to More > Guest Network.
  2. Turn on the network, set a password, adjust any available options, and save.

Depending on the model and software, options may include security type, duration, working band, bandwidth limit, and local access. TP-Link says Deco networks are automatically isolated in Router mode; in AP mode, a local-access control can allow access to local resources. Feature availability varies by model and software version. See TP-Link’s Deco guest-network instructions.

Set up guest Wi-Fi in a router’s web interface

Some routers let you configure a guest network from a browser instead of an app. NETGEAR’s web-interface example requires a device connected to the router and uses the router’s local login page:

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  1. Sign in to the router’s administration page and open Guest Network.
  2. Choose the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network, enable SSID broadcast if you want guests to see the network name, and enter a distinct name.
  3. Select an available security option, set a password, and apply the changes.

The security choices and menu names are specific to the router. NETGEAR identifies WPA2 as the default on the documented interface; that is not a universal default. Use the instructions for your model in NETGEAR’s web-interface guide.

Choose settings that fit your guests and household

Use a separate password and an appropriate security mode

Do not reuse the password for your main Wi-Fi. Choose an encrypted security mode supported by both the router and guests’ devices. Microsoft advises using at least WPA2 when available; NETGEAR recommends WPA3 if the router supports it. Labels and compatibility options differ, so check the device documentation rather than expecting one security setting to appear everywhere. See Microsoft’s guidance and NETGEAR’s home-network security advice.

Decide whether guests need local access

Consider whether visitors need to print, cast to a screen, or use another device on your home network. If they do, check whether your router can allow access to selected devices or local resources. Otherwise, leave local access restricted when that is an available option. The control and its effect depend on the product and operating mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider a time limit, then turn the network off when appropriate

Some products offer a duration or schedule for guest access. NETGEAR documents an optional time window in its app, and TP-Link lists duration settings on some Deco models. If your router has no time limit, you can disable the network after visitors no longer need it. These controls are model-dependent.

Can smart-home devices use guest Wi-Fi?

Some internet-only smart devices may be suitable for a guest network, but first check how each device works. Its app or features may depend on discovering or controlling other devices on the home network. Moving it could disrupt those functions, and router controls and device behavior are not uniform. Use your device and router documentation to confirm what needs local network access.

What to compare if your router lacks guest Wi-Fi

If you are considering a router or mesh system that supports guest access, compare the practical controls—not just whether the feature exists:

  • Whether guest Wi-Fi is supported on the specific model.
  • Whether guest-to-main network isolation is enabled by default, and how AP or bridge mode changes it.
  • Whether local access or sharing selected devices is possible.
  • Which bands and security modes are supported.
  • Whether you can set a time limit, control bandwidth, or share access conveniently.

Check current documentation for the precise model and software version. Many households may already have guest Wi-Fi available and only need to enable it.
