You can build iOS and Android apps without owning a Mac by using Expo Application Services (EAS). EAS Build compiles Android apps on Linux runners and iOS apps on Expo’s hosted macOS runners; you can request builds from Windows or Linux. Apple signing requirements and paid developer membership for App Store distribution still apply.
What EAS does—and what it does not remove
EAS Build is a hosted service: it takes your Expo or React Native project and creates a platform binary in Expo’s cloud infrastructure. Expo documents that Android builds run on Linux runners and iOS builds run on its macOS cloud runners. You do not need to own or operate the Mac that compiles the iOS app. Expo’s EAS Build introduction explains the build service and its runners.

Building is only one part of release. You still need the right signing credentials, store accounts, release artifact, and store review or release steps. The workflow below avoids a personal Mac for cloud builds and submissions; manually archiving or uploading through Xcode remains a macOS-dependent alternative.
What you need for each platform
| Requirement | iOS | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud build runner | Expo-hosted macOS runner | Linux runner |
| Store account | Paid Apple Developer membership for App Store submission | Google Play Developer account for Play distribution |
| Signing | Apple certificates and provisioning credentials; who can create them depends on account type and role | EAS can generate and manage a keystore or use existing credentials |
| Production store artifact | IPA for App Store Connect | Android App Bundle (AAB) for Google Play; an APK build profile is for installation/testing, not the Play submission artifact |
| Testing | Simulator, or a signed development build for a physical iPhone or iPad | Android emulator or physical Android device |
These requirements are documented by Expo for EAS Build, EAS Submit, managed credentials, development builds, and simulator builds.

- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
Build from Windows or Linux
- Start with an Expo or React Native project. Install and authenticate the EAS CLI, following Expo’s EAS Build setup guide.
- Configure the project and build profiles. Set up the project’s EAS configuration in
eas.json. Use distinct development and production profiles if you need both test builds and store-ready builds. - Request the cloud build. From the project directory, run
eas build --platform iosfor iOS,eas build --platform androidfor Android, oreas build --platform allfor both. The build runs on EAS infrastructure, not on your Windows or Linux computer. - Handle signing when prompted. For iOS device or store builds, use Apple credentials that you are authorized to manage, or coordinate with an authorized account holder or teammate whose credentials are already available to the project. For Android, EAS can manage a keystore or use one you provide.
- Choose the right profile for the outcome. Use a development build for app development and testing; create a production build for distribution. For Google Play, configure a production Android App Bundle rather than an APK.
Test without buying a Mac—or necessarily a phone
Android
You can test an Android build in an emulator or install it on a physical Android device. A phone is optional if an emulator suits your testing needs. An APK profile can be useful for installation and testing, but it is not the AAB required for the Google Play submission path.
iOS
For simulator testing, create a simulator build where appropriate; simulator builds are distinct from builds intended for an iPhone or iPad. Installing a development build on a physical iOS device requires signing and device setup. Expo’s guide also notes that Developer Mode must be enabled on iOS 16 and later for this development workflow. See Expo’s development-build guide and simulator build documentation.

Submit store builds without a Mac
App Store
EAS Submit works from Windows, Linux, and macOS, so a Mac is not necessary for the documented submission workflow. You need a paid Apple Developer account, appropriate signing credentials, a production IPA, and a bundle identifier. Submission sends the build to App Store Connect; Apple’s review and final release actions still take place there. See Expo’s iOS submission guide.

Google Play
Play distribution requires a Google Play Developer account and a production Android App Bundle. EAS Submit can handle the upload workflow, while release management takes place in Play Console. A build configured as an APK is useful for direct installation or testing, not as the Play store submission artifact. See Expo’s Android submission guide.

The Mac can be omitted, but store accounts cannot. Expo’s setup material lists Apple Developer Program membership at $99 USD and Google Play Developer membership at a one-time $25 USD; the page does not state a year for those figures, so check the current official program terms before budgeting. Apple’s membership is needed for App Store submission, and a Google Play Developer account is needed for Play distribution. See Expo’s setup guide and Android submission guide.
