Can Haptic Stimulation Help You Relax? What the Evidence Shows

Haptic stimulation may help some people feel calmer briefly, but studies remain early and varied. Here’s what the evidence can—and cannot—show.

Possibly, for some people in the short term. A 2024 experiment found that participants reported less anxiety and showed lower physiological arousal after repeatedly squeezing a vibrating stress ball for 20 seconds. That is an encouraging but limited signal—not proof that vibration provides lasting relief, works for everyone, or treats an anxiety disorder. Studies of other haptic approaches use different devices, people, settings, and outcomes, so they do not establish a best device or a proven consumer relaxation treatment.

What counts as haptic stimulation?

Haptic stimulation uses touch or vibration to convey a sensation. In relaxation research, that can mean squeezing a vibrating ball, receiving gentle vibration from a headset, or wearing a device that changes vibration in response to a physiological signal. Those are distinct interventions, not interchangeable versions of one established technique.

The word “relaxation” also covers different kinds of evidence. A person may report feeling calmer; a study may measure heart rate, electrodermal activity, or brain activity. A change in one measure does not automatically mean a person felt relaxed, and these outcomes should not be treated as a single relaxation score.

What studies have found

Vibrating stress ball: a brief experimental signal

In a 2024 study, participants viewed a stressful or calming image and then repeatedly squeezed a vibrating stress ball for 20 seconds. The researchers used a pre-post design with a control group and assessed anxiety with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and arousal with electrodermal activity. Both measures decreased after squeezing. The study also varied the coordination between participants’ squeezing rhythm and the ball’s vibration. The result suggests a possible short-term effect under experimental conditions; it does not show how long any relief lasts or whether it carries over to everyday stress. Investigational headset: preliminary findings in adults with anxiety disorders

A 2022 open-label pilot examined Mechanical Affective Touch Therapy (MATT), an investigational headset that delivers gentle vibration at both mastoid processes, the areas behind the ears. Twenty-two adults with anxiety disorders and at least moderate symptom severity self-administered it at home at least twice daily for four weeks. The report described baseline-to-endpoint improvements in anxiety and depressive symptoms, greater mindfulness, and EEG observations.

Because participants and researchers knew the device was being used and the pilot was small, the findings are preliminary rather than proof of efficacy. The study record also says data collection was supported by Affect Neuro Inc., the device developer. The authors described the approach as promising and called for further development. Wearable biofeedback: different placements, different measures

A study summarized in a 2025 KIT repository record examined real-time, heart-rate-driven vibration during eyes-closed wakeful rest. It compared stimulation at the wrist, hand, forearm, and shoulder. Heart rate was lower at the wrist, shoulder, and forearm, while alpha power did not change. Participants rated restfulness and preferred placement most highly for the forearm and shoulder; they reported greater comfort, relaxation, and sleepiness with forearm vibration, while wrist vibration was more noticeable.

This is a study of feedback during a specific resting task, not evidence that a named retail wearable produces the same result. Its physiological and subjective findings should be kept distinct. The work is identified as a contribution to the 2025 ACM International Symposium on Wearable Computers. See the KIT repository record.

Other findings are limited or not yet reported

  • Registered trial, results unpublished: A completed Japanese registry entry describes a randomized, open, three-arm study of 42 healthy men aged 20–49. It compares two minutes of gradually slowing vibration, two minutes of fixed-tempo vibration, and no stimulation. The entry, disclosed June 20, 2025, lists results as unpublished, so it cannot establish that either vibration pattern works. Check the UMIN registry entry.
  • Historical study: A 1982 randomized study assigned 16 participants to vibration at a footrest, backrest, both, or a control. It reported changes in EMG and self-reported muscle-tension measures in vibration conditions, but no comparable change in the control. Its small sample and age limit what it can establish about current devices. Read the study record on PubMed.
  • Smart-goggle pilot: A 2025 pre-post pilot described bedtime goggles delivering gentle vibration to the eyes and temples and planned to examine sleep and self-reported anxiety, stress, and relaxation. The study page establishes its purpose, but not outcome data that support a claim of benefit. See the study page in JMIR Formative Research.

How the approaches differ

These studies are not a head-to-head test, so the comparison below is practical rather than an efficacy ranking.

Approach Stimulation and feedback People and context What was measured Evidence status
Vibrating stress ball Hand-squeezed vibration; squeezing rhythm was varied relative to vibration rhythm Brief experimental task after viewing an image Self-reported anxiety and electrodermal arousal Controlled acute experiment published in 2024; does not establish lasting relief
MATT headset Gentle vibration at both mastoid processes 22 adults with anxiety disorders; home use for four weeks Anxiety and depressive symptoms, mindfulness, and EEG observations Small open-label pilot; preliminary findings
Heart-rate-driven wearable Vibration varied with heart rate; wrist, hand, forearm, and shoulder placements were compared Healthy participants during eyes-closed wakeful rest Heart rate, alpha power, restfulness ratings, and placement preferences Research result summarized in a 2025 repository record; not a validation of a retail product
Gradually slowing vibration Two minutes of slowing vibration, compared with fixed-tempo vibration or no stimulation Registered study of 42 healthy men aged 20–49 in Japan Results not stated; UMIN lists them as unpublished Completed registered trial; no outcome claim can be made from the registry entry

What are the limitations?

  • Short tasks do not establish lasting relief. The 20-second stress-ball experiment cannot show that an effect persists through the day or reduces ongoing stress.
  • Studies test different things. A hand-held ball, mastoid headset, and heart-rate-responsive wearable differ in placement, feedback, population, and setting. Results from one do not validate the others.
  • The evidence is early and uneven. One anxiety-disorder study was a small open-label pilot; the registered trial has no published results in its registry entry; and the historical study was small.
  • Measures are not interchangeable. Self-reported anxiety, muscle tension, heart rate, electrodermal activity, EEG, and ratings of restfulness describe different outcomes. A change in a physiological measure alone does not prove a felt benefit.
  • No standard protocol is established. The reviewed studies do not determine an optimal vibration frequency, intensity, duration, placement, or pattern that works across devices and people.
  • Research findings do not validate retail products. The available studies do not establish that a particular consumer device reproduces the research conditions or is clinically validated for relaxation.

What should you make of a vibrating relaxation device?

If you want to try vibration as a comfort or grounding aid, treat it as an optional sensory tool, not a proven treatment. A vibrating stress ball is closer to the object studied in the 2024 experiment than an ordinary squeeze ball, but that does not make any retail model clinically validated. Wearables and headsets likewise should not inherit evidence from a study unless the device, stimulation, and use conditions actually match.
