A 2026 study found that estimates of brain age were associated with certain gut bacteria and stool metabolites in one group of adults, but it did not show that a stool test can tell an individual how fast their brain is aging. The findings point to a possible connection worth studying—not a diagnostic test or a proven way to change brain aging.
How the researchers estimated brain age
The multicohort study analyzed brain scans from nearly 1,500 young and mid-life adults across three groups, according to a UCLA Health release dated October 4, 2026. Researchers used patterns of communication in the brain while participants were at rest to estimate brain age. They compared that estimate with each participant’s chronological age to calculate a Brain Aging Index (BAI).

In this study, “brain age” means a research estimate derived from those brain communication patterns. It is not a diagnosis of dementia, nor does it provide an individual prognosis.

Across all three groups, a higher BAI was associated with poorer working memory and executive function, as well as more reported symptoms of depression. In one group, researchers also analyzed stool samples and found associations between higher BAI and specific gut bacteria and metabolic byproducts.

The release mentions certain fat molecules, a cholesterol-related compound and lower levels of estetrol. It does not identify the bacterial species or exact compounds, or report effect sizes or the stool-sample subgroup’s size. Those details cannot be inferred from the findings described in the release.
What “associated with” means here
The study was cross-sectional: it examined measures collected at a point in time rather than following participants to establish what changed first. It therefore cannot show whether gut changes contribute to brain changes, brain changes affect the gut, or other factors influence both.

Church’s statement that “Brain aging doesn’t suddenly begin when we get older, but the biological signals may be detectable decades earlier” is her interpretation, quoted in the UCLA Health release. It should not be read as evidence that this study proved a stool test can predict brain aging decades in advance.

What evidence would be needed for a prediction or treatment claim?
Different study designs answer different questions. This study’s cross-sectional associations can identify patterns to investigate, but they do not establish predictive accuracy or show that changing gut biology improves brain outcomes.

Does this validate a microbiome test, supplement or brain-age scan?
No. The report describes stool samples and brain scans as research methods; it does not validate a consumer stool test or brain-age scan for diagnosis, prediction or monitoring. It also does not test probiotics, fiber supplements or any other intervention to reverse brain aging. The possibility of future intervention research is not evidence that a treatment works.

The results connect a brain-age estimate with cognitive measures, reported depression symptoms and, in one group, gut-related measures. That makes brain–gut relationships a research question worth pursuing. The available release does not establish which bacteria or metabolites matter, how large the associations were, or whether they apply beyond the participants studied.

The study’s full methods and results are not detailed in the accessible release, so finer claims about its cohorts or measurements cannot be confirmed from that account.
