Rockstar lists PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One; Take-Two’s original release announcement names PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. A PS3 copy is for a PS3, not a PS2.
Was GTA 4 released for PS2?
No official PS2 release appears in the platform listings. Rockstar’s GTA IV game page lists PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, while Take-Two’s 2007 release announcement says the game would launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Take-Two gave the worldwide store date as April 29, 2008.

That establishes the consumer answer: there is no official GTA 4 disc or edition for PS2. It does not rule on every possible fan-made project; it means those projects are not an official PS2 release.

Why can’t a PS2 play the PS3 version?
The PS3 and PS2 are different consoles, and a PS3 edition of GTA IV is not a PS2 game. Owning the PlayStation disc does not make it compatible with a PS2. If you want the PlayStation version, you need a compatible PlayStation 3.

The official release sources identify the supported platforms but do not give a detailed technical explanation for why no PS2 port was made. It is fair to note that the named launch platforms were the later console generation, but specific claims about PS2 memory, processor, graphics, or storage limits are not established by those sources.

Rockstar’s PC minimum requirements, published by Rockstar Games Customer Support on April 30, 2024, are for the PC version only; they do not establish what would be required to port the game to PS2.
