Yes. Google Sheets can organize a list of URLs and automate screenshot capture with Apps Script, but Apps Script does not render web pages itself. The script must send each URL to a browser-based screenshot service, then place the returned image in the sheet or record a link to it.
How the workflow works
- List the pages: Put one webpage URL in each row of a Google Sheet.
- Read the rows: Use Apps Script bound to the spreadsheet to collect the URLs and skip blank rows.
- Request captures: For each URL, call an external browser-based renderer. Apps Script’s
UrlFetchAppsends HTTP requests; it is not a browser and does not turn a fetched page into a rendered screenshot. - Save the result: The renderer returns image data or a screenshot URL. Apps Script can insert the image into a cell area or write a link and status into result columns.
- Track failures: Record success or an error for every row so a failed capture can be retried without losing progress.
Google’s Apps Script Sheet reference supports inserting an image from a blob or URL. A URL used for insertion must be publicly accessible, and blob insertion has a maximum supported size of 2 MB.

Choose how screenshots appear in the sheet

Build a reliable batch process
For small lists, a script can process rows in one run. For larger lists, divide work into bounded chunks and save the next row to process, then resume on a later run. Apps Script exposes UrlFetchApp.fetchAll(requests) for multiple requests, but that method alone does not establish a universally safe batch size or guarantee a particular throughput.
- Keep the source URL, output link or image, and per-row status in separate columns.
- Catch request and insertion errors per row instead of stopping the entire batch at the first failure.
- Retry only failures, and make retries safe so a second run does not duplicate or overwrite good results unexpectedly.
- For each provider, check its current rate limits, retention behavior, authentication requirements, and capture options before choosing a chunk size.
Google says UrlFetchApp requests originate from a specific set of Google IP ranges. That can matter if the destination service uses IP allowlisting; see the UrlFetchApp reference. In managed Google Workspace environments, administrators can restrict external connections available to Apps Script and Sheets, so the screenshot service’s host may need approval.

Privacy and access considerations
Sending a URL to a renderer shares that URL with the service operating it. Do not submit private or sensitive URLs to a provider unless its handling of those URLs is acceptable to you. If the captured page requires authentication, confirm that the provider supports the needed method and avoid placing secrets directly in a spreadsheet or script that other users can access.

Troubleshooting
- The script gets page content instead of a screenshot: A normal URL fetch retrieves an HTTP response; use a browser-based renderer that returns screenshot bytes or a capture URL.
- Image insertion fails for a returned URL: Google requires the image URL to be publicly accessible. Use a blob response instead, or make the result available to the account inserting it.
- Blob insertion rejects the image: Check whether the image exceeds Google’s 2 MB maximum for blob insertion; store the image elsewhere and write a link instead.
- The batch stops partway through: Save a next-row cursor and process a bounded chunk on each run. Log errors per row so you can resume at failed or unprocessed URLs.
- Requests are blocked in a managed Workspace: Ask the Workspace administrator whether external connections to the renderer’s host are allowed.
- A destination uses IP allowlisting: Check Google’s documented UrlFetchApp IP ranges with the destination administrator before relying on the integration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a page that needs a login?
Possibly, depending on the renderer’s authentication and cookie options. Verify its current documentation and protect credentials from spreadsheet users who should not have them.

Does Google provide a universal safe number of URLs to capture per run?
No universal batch size is established by the Apps Script fetchAll method; choose chunks based on the service’s limits and your script’s execution constraints.
