Can Google Maps Find Truck Routes? What to Do Instead

Google Maps can give ordinary directions, but its regular app does not offer a truck mode for entering vehicle dimensions or cargo restrictions.

Google Maps’ regular app does not have a documented truck mode where you can enter a vehicle’s height, weight, length, or cargo restrictions. You can use it for ordinary directions, but those routes are not configured for a truck. Google offers truck-specific routing separately through Google Maps Platform for provisioned customers and developers.

Get ordinary directions in Google Maps

On an Android phone or tablet, Google’s standard directions workflow is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Google Maps and search for a destination, or tap a place on the map.
  2. Tap Directions.
  3. Choose a transportation mode.
  4. Review the suggested route. If alternate routes appear in gray, tap one to select it.
  5. Tap Start to begin navigation.

These steps create ordinary directions; they do not account for truck dimensions, low clearances, weight limits, or cargo restrictions. Google says oversized vehicles are not intended users of its navigation instructions. Navigation and lane information also vary by country, region, and language. Why Google Maps doesn’t show a truck route setting

The consumer Maps app’s documented directions workflow has no truck-routing setting for entering a vehicle profile. Google’s separate Large Vehicle Routing capability is part of Google Maps Platform, not a switch drivers can turn on in the regular app.

  • Quickly find nearby CAT Scale locations in the U.S. and Canada to verify your truck is within legal weight limits before hitting the road

What Google’s platform routing can account for

For applications built with Google’s Routes API, a request can use travelMode: TRUCK and a vehicleInfo object. The documented vehicle information can include height, width, length, weight, axle count, and hazardous-goods classifications. The service returns a route and truck-specific estimates; a route token can be passed to the Navigation SDK for turn-by-turn guidance.

Access requires provisioning, so this is a developer or fleet workflow rather than a consumer Maps feature. Google’s documentation, checked October 7, 2026, lists general availability in the contiguous 48 United States and experimental availability in Japan; Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories are excluded. Coverage may change, so check the current availability details before relying on it.

How to check a truck route for restrictions

Do not treat a route displayed on a consumer map as confirmation that a truck can legally or safely travel it. A U.S. Department of Transportation report on commercial vehicle operations found that the Google Maps and Waze routes it studied were generated independently of truck restrictions. It describes carriers using Google Street View to inspect posted height and weight signs, and notes that consumer maps can help locate a customer’s address even when they cannot generate truck routes. Street View can assist with manual inspection, but it cannot prove a route is suitable or legal for your vehicle. FHWA report: Traveler Information for the Commercial Vehicle Operations Community

Use a truck-capable routing source and verify critical limits

  • Use a routing tool that accepts the actual vehicle dimensions and cargo classification, rather than assuming a car route will work.
  • Check which road restrictions and geographic regions its data covers, and whether the restriction information is current.
  • Understand how it handles rerouting and flags roads where restrictions may have been ignored.
  • Confirm critical clearances, weight limits, commercial-vehicle prohibitions, and hazardous-goods rules against official signs and applicable local regulations.

Google cautions that even its Large Vehicle Routing service may return a best-effort route that crosses restricted segments if it cannot find a fully compliant one. Such segments may be flagged with routeRestrictionsPartiallyIgnored. Its Navigation SDK documents callouts for height, weight, commercial-truck prohibitions, and hazardous-goods restrictions, but Google says not to rely solely on the routing output to determine safety or legality. Follow posted signs and local rules. Google Maps Platform: Large vehicle routing overview · Google Navigation SDK: Navigate large vehicle routes

When Google Maps can still help

For a commercial trip, consumer Maps may be useful for finding a customer’s address or viewing the surrounding area. Keep that task separate from choosing a truck-safe route: use an appropriate truck-routing source for the route itself, then verify restrictions that matter to your vehicle. The question of whether Google Maps should show routes based on truck height and cargo also appears in a Google Maps Community discussion; it does not change the distinction between the consumer app and Google’s platform product.
