Google directs Android users to place emergency calls through the device’s calling app directly. For ordinary calls, Gemini can use your phone’s calling app, and a lock-screen setting can allow calls without unlocking. That setting does not establish that every call will proceed without confirmation. Google’s separate “Call for me” feature requires you to review the proposed task and tap its start button.
Can Gemini call emergency services?
No. Google’s instructions for the Gemini Phone app on Android say not to use it for emergency calls; use the device’s calling app directly instead. Google also says its separate “Call for me” feature cannot call emergency services such as 911. Google’s Gemini Phone app instructions and Call for me help describe these limits. Google gives a similar restriction for calls from Assistant speakers and displays in its Google Assistant calling instructions.

If you need emergency help, open the phone’s native calling app and dial using that app. Do not rely on Gemini as the route for an emergency call.

There is no single documented rule that covers every ordinary Gemini call. Google says Gemini can use the device’s calling app to call contacts, businesses, and phone numbers, but its help pages do not establish that every call prompt, device, or voice-assistant invocation always requires confirmation—or that calls always happen without one.

Google gives ordinary-call examples such as “Can you call [phone number]?” and “Call [contact full name].” This feature requires an Android phone or tablet, an active mobile plan, the Gemini mobile app, and Phone permission for the Google app. It is not available in Gemini in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or Live chats. See Google’s ordinary-calling instructions for current setup details.
What changes when your phone is locked?
On Android, you can allow calls and messages from Gemini without unlocking the device by enabling Allow calls and messages without unlocking in Gemini’s Gemini on lock screen settings. Google notes that some requests may still require unlocking, particularly requests involving personal content. This setting controls access from the lock screen; it is not a blanket promise that every call will skip confirmation.

“Call for me” is a separate feature for asking businesses about everyday matters such as opening hours, availability, service quotes, reservations, phone menus, or hold times. Before it starts, Google instructs you to review Gemini’s task summary—including the number it will call and the details it will share—then tap Call for me. You can cancel before connection, monitor the transcript or audio, or take over the call.

Google says each call begins with Gemini identifying itself as a Google AI assistant calling on your behalf, stating your name, and saying the line is recorded. The feature excludes emergency calls, financial transactions, sending sensitive personal information, and telemarketing. Its controls and restrictions are described in Google’s Call for me help.
