Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) may reduce some fire hazards in lithium-ion batteries, but they do not make batteries fireproof. Laboratory studies report promising results for specific formulations, while other testing shows that cells with gel electrolyte can still contribute substantial heat during a fire. The outcome depends on the electrolyte, cell design, chemistry and test conditions.
How a gel polymer electrolyte may reduce fire risk
A GPE is an electrolyte formulation incorporated into a battery cell—not a fire-extinguishing device or a consumer retrofit. In conventional lithium-ion batteries, electrolyte-related reactions can contribute to thermal runaway, a self-accelerating failure that can lead to fire.

A 2023 ACS Energy Letters paper describes a polymer designed to scavenge radicals involved in chain reactions associated with thermal runaway. The authors say the polymer dissolves in carbonate electrolyte, can cross-link in the presence of lithium salts such as LiPF6, and forms a gel at 2 wt% in the electrolyte. They report thermally gelling cells after conventional assembly and testing their durability against external thermal and mechanical shocks without sacrificing cell performance. These findings concern that formulation and its laboratory tests, not a general safety certification for GPE batteries. Read the 2023 paper abstract.

What fire tests show—and what they do not
A 2020 cone-calorimeter study tested LiCoO2-based cells with gel electrolyte. Under the study’s conditions, the authors reported greater heat-contribution risk when state of charge exceeded 25% and incident heat flux exceeded 15 kW/m2. The result is specific to those cells and test conditions, but it is an important counterpoint: gel electrolyte does not eliminate fire risk. See the 2020 study.
GPE designs are not one standardized material. Different polymers, additives, cell chemistries, formats and test procedures can produce different outcomes. Results from separate studies are not head-to-head comparisons and should not be combined into a single expected performance figure.

|---|---|---|
| 2022, flame-retardant cross-linked GPE | 0.60 mS/cm ionic conductivity and a 5.0 V electrochemical window at ambient temperature | Material properties reported by the study; they do not establish fire safety in every cell. Study record. |
| 2024, chemically cross-linked nonflammable GPE in a graphite/NMC pouch cell | 146.7 mAh/g initial discharge capacity; 71.1% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 0.5 C and 55 °C | Performance for that formulation and cycling protocol, not a general battery-life estimate. Study record. |
| 2025, in-situ-fabricated nonflammable GPE | Thermal-runaway incubation time increased from 10.78 to 36.34 hours; maximum temperature-rise rate decreased from 612.0 to 388.2 °C/s | Experimental results for the study’s tested system; they cannot be directly compared with another paper’s cells or test conditions. PubMed record. |
| 2026, low-reactivity GPE in nickel-rich lithium-ion pouch cells | 90.1% lower total heat generation; thermal-runaway peak temperature of 484 °C versus 547.2 °C for the comparison cell | A study-specific comparison, not a prediction for other cell designs. Study record. |

What this means for battery buyers
The studies describe experimental electrolytes and cells; the available evidence does not identify a consumer-ready GPE product or a way to retrofit an existing battery. A battery should not be treated as fire-safe simply because its electrolyte is described as a gel or nonflammable. Safety depends on the full cell and its operating and abuse conditions, not on the electrolyte label alone.
