The result applies to the treated material—not boron nitride in general—and it is a materials-science finding, not a demonstrated commercial device.
What the 2017 study found
Radhakrishnan and colleagues reported that fluorine changes the charge distribution around neighboring nitrogen atoms in h-BN. Their spectroscopy and structural analyses indicated B–N, B–F, and N–F bonding, along with local lattice defects. The examined product consisted of thin, single- or bilayer sheets. The authors linked these changes to modified electronic behavior and room-temperature weak ferromagnetism. Read the 2017 paper in Science Advances.

The reported absorption bandgap for the h-BN sample was 5.86 eV. At 3.2% fluorine doping, the authors measured 5.5 eV. They also reported that the gap varies nonlinearly as fluorination increases; the result should not be simplified to a rule that adding more fluorine always narrows the bandgap. These are findings for the samples in this study, not universal specifications for fluorinated boron nitride.

The team started with bulk h-BN powder dispersed in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and used Nafion as the fluorinating agent in a solvothermal reactor. The reported preparation heated the mixture at 200°C for 12 hours. The authors say Nafion degrades at that temperature, producing fluorine radicals that interact with B–N bonds. They then separated the sheets from polymer fragments and washed them with acetone.

These details describe a laboratory synthesis, not a simple home or consumer process. The paper examined the resulting material using optical spectroscopy, structural analysis, electrical and magnetic measurements, and density functional theory calculations.
What “magnetic” means in this result
The reported magnetic response was weak ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. Temperature-dependent AC magnetic measurements also showed features the authors interpreted as frustrated magnetism. They discussed possible coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions or spin-glass-like behavior; those interpretations are more qualified than the room-temperature weak-ferromagnetism finding.

In other words, the paper reports a magnetic response in fluorinated h-BN samples, but its discussion of the underlying temperature-dependent magnetic behavior includes possible explanations rather than a single settled mechanism.

How this differs from an earlier fluorination route
A separate 2014 study used ammonium fluoride in a one-step exfoliation-and-fluorination route and reported ferromagnetic characteristics in its prepared samples. That work is related context, not the same experiment or recipe as the 2017 Nafion-based solvothermal process.

No working commercial device is demonstrated in the 2017 paper. The authors identify electronic and magnetic devices, including high-power electronics and sensors, as possible future applications. The study establishes laboratory material properties; it does not establish a finished product, manufacturing readiness, or real-world device performance.
