Yes. Flashlights, camera flashes, and close contact can disturb nesting sea turtles or hatchlings. On a nesting beach at night, turn off bright lights, do not use flash, keep your distance, and never touch, chase, or block a turtle. Follow posted signs and local wildlife guidance because viewing rules and recommended distances vary by location.
How light can affect sea turtles
Artificial light can disrupt the behavior of both adult turtles and hatchlings. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service explains that beach light pollution can disorient turtles, potentially drawing them inland or away from the ocean. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance says a light may cause a nesting female to abandon an attempt (a “false crawl”) or lead a hatchling away from the water.

Bright white lights are not limited to flashlights. Cell-phone screens, vehicle lights, exterior building lights, and beach fires can all add light to a beach after dark. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service advises avoiding these sources near nesting beaches after dusk. Read its sea turtle nesting-season guidance.
Why flash photography is a bad idea
Do not use flash photography or video lights near nesting turtles or hatchlings. Florida FWC cautions that light can interfere with natural behavior, and its encounter guidance advises against flashlights, flash photography, and video equipment around turtles.

NOAA proceedings include research on flash photography and green turtle nesting behavior at Tortuguero, Costa Rica, but the material available does not establish a universal numerical effect or show that every flash invariably interrupts nesting. That uncertainty is not a reason to try it: agency viewing advice is to avoid flash and prevent disturbance. NOAA’s general permission to photograph or film marine wildlife applies only when people follow viewing guidance and distances and do not disturb animals; it is not permission to use flash where nesting-beach rules prohibit it. Why you should not touch, chase, or obstruct a turtle
Keep your hands off turtles, nests, and hatchlings. Do not feed or pursue an animal, crowd it, or stand in its route between the nest area and the sea. Florida FWC warns that a startled or disoriented turtle may be distracted from nesting; a female may return to the ocean before laying eggs.

Observe quietly from a respectful distance instead. NOAA’s viewing guidance says not to approach or touch protected wildlife. Local rules may impose additional restrictions, so obey signs and instructions from authorized personnel.
What to do if you encounter a turtle at night
- Turn off bright lights. Put away your flashlight and dim or switch off your phone screen. Do not use a camera flash, video light, or other light directed toward the animal.
- Stay quiet and give the turtle room. Do not approach, touch, chase, feed, or surround it. Keep its path to and from the ocean clear.
- Follow the local distance rule. There is no single distance that applies everywhere. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance for Alabama says to stay at least 30 feet away; Hawaiʻi guidance for honu says to stay more than 10 feet away. Florida FWC’s encounter page says to stay out of the turtle’s way but does not specify a distance in the cited text. These are location-specific recommendations, not interchangeable universal rules. - Report animals in trouble. If a turtle is injured or dead, or hatchlings are moving the wrong way, contact the local wildlife authority or follow beach-posted reporting instructions. Do not try to handle or redirect the animal yourself.
Is a red or amber flashlight safe to use?
Not automatically. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service suggests a long-wavelength red or amber light, or a red filter over a regular flashlight, as an alternative to bright white light in its Hawaiʻi viewing feature. The same guidance prioritizes turning lights off near a turtle and keeping your distance. A safer way to see nesting turtles
If you want to observe nesting, consider an organized sea turtle walk. NOAA recommends organized walks as a way to view turtles while helping protect turtles, nests, and hatchlings from disturbance.
