Espressif documents running TensorFlow Lite Micro’s Micro Speech example on ESP32-S3-DevKitC. It listens through a microphone and recognizes two keywords—“yes” and “no”—using a compact model. That is a useful demonstration of on-device keyword inference, not general speech recognition or a configurable wake-word system. For a distinct wake phrase followed by spoken commands, Espressif’s separate ESP-SR stack includes WakeNet and MultiNet.
What the TFLM Micro Speech example does
Espressif’s port describes a 20 kB model that recognizes “yes” and “no.” The upstream TensorFlow Lite Micro example describes the model as less than 20 kB and likewise limits its categories to those two words. Espressif’s Micro Speech README and the upstream example documentation explain the demonstration.

The audio pipeline has two main stages:
- Feature preparation: A preprocessor turns incoming audio samples into spectrogram features. It processes overlapping audio windows and accumulates enough features for inference.
- Keyword inference: The small model consumes those features and returns probabilities for its categories, including “yes” and “no.”
This is a constrained keyword-classification example. It does not establish that the model can transcribe arbitrary speech, recognize a broad command vocabulary, or detect any wake phrase a developer chooses.
What ESP32-S3 support is documented
Espressif lists ESP32-S3-DevKitC among the tested devices for its port and provides example deployment instructions using ESP-IDF. The README’s test note names ESP-IDF release/v4.2 and release/v4.4; those are the releases reported in the example’s test history, not a statement that they are the current recommended toolchain. Consult the example’s setup instructions for the deployment procedure.

A board’s chip support does not by itself ensure it is ready to capture audio. Check the chosen board’s microphone or audio-input path and follow the example’s hardware instructions before expecting it to listen.
When ESP-SR is a better fit
Espressif’s ESP-SR is a separate voice-solution stack, not another name for the TFLM Micro Speech example. Its documented components include an Audio Front-end (AFE), WakeNet for wake-word detection, and MultiNet for command recognition. The ESP-SR Getting Started guide recommends ESP32-S3-Korvo-1 or Korvo-2 audio development boards.

- ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8 SPI voltage: 3.3v, ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 is an entry-level development board equipped with Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module ESP32-S3
- Most of the I/O pins on the module are broken out to the pin headers on both sides of this board for easy interfacing. Developers can either connect peripherals with jumper wires or mount ESP32-S3-DevKitC on a breadboard.
- The ESP32-S3-DevKitC development board equipped with ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N16R8, a general-purpose Wi-Fi + Bluetooth LE MCU module that integrates complete Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE functions.
- ESP32-S3-N16R8 cable can be used: USB Type A to Type-C cable or CC cable Note the distinction between the commonly used USB A port to Type-C cable that can only be charged, which cannot be used for communication between YD-ESP32-S3 and the host.
- USB-to-UART Port and ESP32-S3 USB Port (either one or both), default power supply (recommended)
The guide’s example uses “Hi ESP” as a wake phrase, then listens for English commands. If no command follows within a period of time, command listening stops and another wake phrase is required. This illustrates a two-stage interaction: wake-word detection first, command recognition afterward.

For continuous audio, the documentation says WakeNet averages recognition values over multiple frames and triggers only when the smoothed value exceeds a threshold. These are Espressif’s descriptions of the design and supported capabilities; they are not an independent measurement of recognition accuracy in a particular room or product.

What the documentation does not establish
Chip or board support is not a performance result. The cited documents do not provide a current ESP32-S3 build’s measured latency, RAM or flash requirement, power consumption, or field accuracy for either route. Those figures depend on the specific board, model, toolchain, audio configuration, and test conditions, so they should not be inferred from the examples’ stated capabilities.
