Engineered cyanobacteria can use photosynthesis to turn carbon dioxide into molecules with fuel potential, but they have not been shown to make commercially available, finished petrol. Published laboratory examples include isobutanol, fatty-acid fuel precursors and propane—chemically different products that require different handling and, in some cases, further processing.
What cyanobacteria make from carbon dioxide
Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria: using light, they fix CO₂ and build carbon-based molecules. Genetic engineering can redirect some of that carbon toward reduced compounds instead of directing it only toward cell growth. A review of the field describes proof-of-principle production of several commodity chemicals, especially short- and medium-chain alcohols, alongside research interest in other products such as terpenoids. “Petrol substitute” is therefore a broad description, not the name of a single product. An alcohol that can serve as a gasoline substitute is not the same as petrol itself; a fatty acid may be a precursor that needs upgrading; and propane is a gas, not a liquid petrol blendstock.

| Product | What the cited work showed | What that means for a petrol substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Isobutanol | A 2009 study engineered Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 to produce isobutyraldehyde and isobutanol directly from CO₂. Overexpressing Rubisco increased production, and the engineered strain remained active for eight days. Atsumi, Higashide and Liao, 2009 | Isobutanol is the example in these sources most directly described as usable as a gasoline substitute. The study demonstrated production of isobutanol, not finished petrol or a ready-to-market fuel. |
| Free fatty acids | A 2013 Sandia National Laboratories account described engineered cyanobacteria excreting free fatty acids. The work was presented as proof of concept; the account reported lower photosynthetic yields, slower growth and cell death in engineered strains. Sandia National Laboratories, 2013 | These are fuel precursors, not necessarily a finished fuel that can go straight into an ordinary vehicle. The Sandia account said yields at the time were too low for large-scale production. |
| Propane and other short- to medium-chain hydrocarbons | A 2022 study engineered synthetic metabolic modules in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 to secrete hydrocarbons. One pathway produced small quantities of propane in closed-culture conditions, with further optimization still possible. 2022 study | Propane is a volatile gaseous fuel, not liquid petrol. The reported small-scale result does not establish production at commercial scale. |
Why a laboratory result is not a petrol replacement
Producing a fuel-related molecule in a culture is only one part of making a practical fuel. The product must be made reliably at useful rates, recovered or handled appropriately, and—depending on its chemical identity—processed or blended to meet its intended use. The examples above vary in all these respects: isobutanol is a liquid alcohol, fatty acids are precursors, and propane is a gas.
#1 Best Overall
- cleans many types of stains from cyanobacteria
- works in fresh and salt water
- safe for all fish, corals, invertebrates, nitrifying bacteria and macro algae's.
- Age range description: all stages
- Output and sustained productivity: the cited examples include small quantities, low yields or biological costs such as slower growth and cell death. These limits make a laboratory demonstration different from continuous, large-scale production.
- Product handling and processing: a secreted precursor is not automatically a usable fuel, and a gaseous hydrocarbon is not an interchangeable substitute for liquid petrol.
- Scale and economics: the sources do not establish a current commercial cost, reliable cross-industry yield figure or market share for cyanobacteria-derived petrol substitutes.
- Climate impact: using CO₂ as a feedstock does not by itself prove that a fuel is carbon-negative or delivers a net lifecycle emissions benefit. That requires evidence about the full production process and energy inputs, which these cited demonstrations do not provide.
What the DIRECTFUEL project did—and did not establish
The EU-funded DIRECTFUEL project ran from 1 October 2010 to 30 September 2014. It investigated direct photosynthetic production of ethylene and short-chain alkanes, including ethane and propane, initially using Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Its stated aim was to develop engine-ready fuels without destructive biomass extraction and additional chemical conversion; that was a project goal, not proof that a commercial fuel was achieved. European Commission CORDIS project fact sheet
The European Commission’s final report describes scientific advances but says the project remained at the fundamental-research level and produced neither patents nor applicable production platforms. That is the reported outcome of this particular project, not a comprehensive verdict on every later research effort or company. European Commission CORDIS final report

What to conclude about the technology
Engineered cyanobacteria have demonstrated that photosynthesis can be harnessed to produce several molecules with fuel potential from CO₂. The clearest gasoline-substitute example here is isobutanol, while the other cited work concerns fuel precursors or hydrocarbons with different physical properties. The evidence supports laboratory proof of concept; it does not establish that cyanobacteria-derived petrol is commercially available, replacing petrol at scale, cost-competitive or climate-beneficial over its full lifecycle.
