Bungie never provided a Destiny 1 save-to-unofficial-game migration path. Its 2017 account migration moved a limited description of some Destiny 1 characters into Destiny 2, while Cross Save is explicitly limited to Destiny 2. A PC fan project could potentially read selected Destiny 1 data through Bungie’s API after user authorization, but the project would have to create its own importer, data mapping, and new character records.
The short answer depends on what you mean by “transfer”
There are three different ideas often mixed together:

- Using the same Guardian in Bungie’s games: Destiny 1 has no current Cross Save route. Bungie’s documented migration was a one-time Destiny 1-to-Destiny 2 recognition process, not a reusable export.
- Copying your complete save: There is no documented general-purpose save export that carries a Destiny 1 character, equipment, quests, currencies, and unlocks into another game.
- Importing selected data into a fan project: This may be technically possible if Bungie’s API returns the fields the project needs and the player authorizes access. The fan project, not Bungie, would define how those fields become a new character.
That distinction matters because an API response is data for an application, not a playable character package. A developer still needs to validate the response, translate Destiny 1 concepts into the project’s rules, handle missing values, and save the result in a database the fan project controls.

Bungie ran an automatic Account and Character Migration on August 1, 2017. Only information that existed by that cutoff qualified. The purpose was to let Destiny 2 recognize selected Destiny 1 history; it was not an invitation to move a complete Destiny 1 account into any game.

Bungie required the same PSN ID or Xbox Gamertag associated with the original account to access the migrated information. The process did not move an account from one platform identity to another. A PC fan project cannot rely on that migration as a cross-platform authentication or save-transfer mechanism.

Bungie’s FAQ stated plainly that the process would not import “any items, game content, Silver, or Eververse Licenses” into Destiny 2. Therefore, even the official path was a recognition of identity and history, not a full inventory migration. It offers no supported mechanism for transferring gear or progression into a separate fan-made PC game.
Why Cross Save does not solve the problem
Bungie’s current Destiny 2 Cross Save guide says: Cross Save is only supported for Destiny 2, and cannot be used on Destiny 1 characters.
Cross Save links supported Destiny 2 platforms under Bungie’s account systems; it does not expose a Destiny 1 character as a portable save file.

Consequently, signing into the same Bungie account on PC will not make a Destiny 1 Guardian appear in an unofficial project. A project that offers “Sign in with Bungie” would still need a separate import workflow and a project-owned account. Cross Save should not be advertised as the implementation behind that workflow.
Could a fan project use Bungie’s API?
Possibly, but only as a limited, user-authorized read integration. Bungie’s API documentation identifies the API root as https://www.bungie.net/Platform, requires an X-API-Key, and uses Bungie’s OAuth mechanisms for authenticated requests. The documentation lists a scope named Read Destiny 1 Inventory and Vault contents.
Bungie’s Legacy Support for Destiny 1 FAQ also said that, after Destiny 2 launched, the Destiny API would remain available and fully functional for third-party app developers. The API documentation displayed version 2.21.8 when retrieved on October 15, 2026. Those statements support the possibility of a read-only importer, but they do not promise that every historical field remains available, that every account can be queried, or that Bungie will create a character in an unrelated game.

Most Destiny 1 character data stopped being viewable in Bungie’s Companion on August 23, 2017. That warning is important for implementation: an API scope can exist while a particular profile has incomplete, stale, or unavailable records. A project should treat every field as optional until it has verified the actual response for the signed-in player.

A workable fan-project import is a translation pipeline, not a file copy. The following sequence keeps the player in control and avoids silently damaging an existing character.
- Register the application and protect the API key. Keep the
X-API-Keyon a server rather than embedding it in a downloadable PC client. Use Bungie OAuth for the user’s authorization and request only the read scope the feature needs. - Explain consent before login. Tell the player exactly which Destiny 1 fields will be read, that the fan project is creating a new record, and that Bungie’s authentication is separate from the project account. Do not ask for a password or claim that the process is official migration.
- Fetch and retain the raw response temporarily. Record the API response, request time, and source membership identifier for troubleshooting, but minimize retention of data the project does not need. A failed parse should not create a half-imported character.
- Map only known fields. Convert class, race, gender, appearance selections, creation date, accomplishments, and any inventory or vault fields actually returned into the project’s schema. Never infer a weapon, subclass, quest, or currency merely because a Destiny 1 character once could have possessed it.
- Show a preview. Display the proposed class, appearance, accomplishments, and any recognized items before writing the new character. Label unavailable values as unavailable instead of showing a default that looks authoritative.
- Resolve conflicts explicitly. Let the player choose whether to create a new character, merge selected achievements, or cancel. If a project character with the same import identifier already exists, offer an update or skip choice; never overwrite silently.
- Commit an idempotent record. Store a project-owned player ID and an import record containing the Bungie membership type, membership ID, source character identifier, mapping version, and import timestamp. Repeating the operation should produce the same result rather than duplicate characters.
- Provide reversal and deletion. A player should be able to remove the imported project character or undo the mapping without affecting the Bungie account. Keep an audit trail sufficient to explain what the importer changed.
The project must keep Bungie identifiers separate from its own player and character IDs. A Bungie membership ID proves which account authorized a read; it is not a safe substitute for the project’s primary key, especially if the project later supports guest accounts, account linking, or platform changes.

What can realistically carry over?

Even when an item record is readable, its meaning may not exist in the fan project. A Destiny 1 weapon could have no equivalent stat block, crafting rule, or balance category. The safest design is to import provenance—“this player had a record returned by Bungie”—and then let the project’s own rules decide whether a cosmetic, achievement, or starter grant is appropriate.
Authentication, privacy and service reliability
OAuth should redirect the player to Bungie’s authorization service and return an authorization result to the project’s server. The project should use short-lived access tokens where supported, encrypt stored credentials, and provide a clear revoke or disconnect control. Never collect a PSN password, Xbox password, or Bungie password directly.

- Consent scope: Request read access only; an importer does not need authority to change a Bungie character.
- Rate limits and outages: Queue imports and show a retry state instead of repeatedly polling. An API timeout must not be treated as an empty inventory.
- Missing profiles: If Destiny 1 data cannot be read, allow the player to continue with a manually configured character.
- Schema changes: Version the mapper. A future API response should be validated before it can modify existing records.
- Data minimization: Keep only identifiers and fields needed for the project’s stated feature, and document retention and deletion behavior.
The API’s continued availability for third-party developers was described by Bungie in its legacy FAQ, but that is not a guarantee of perpetual access to every Destiny 1 record. A responsible project presents the integration as optional and reversible.
Player checklist before trying an import
- Confirm that the project clearly calls itself unofficial and explains what it imports.
- Check whether the project names the exact Destiny 1 fields it supports instead of promising “full progress.”
- Look for an OAuth flow that sends you to Bungie rather than asking for your password inside the fan project.
- Preview the proposed character before accepting it.
- Keep screenshots or other personal records if appearance or accomplishments matter and the API cannot retrieve them.
- Understand that Destiny 1 gear, Silver, Eververse licenses and paid game content are not covered by Bungie’s official migration.
Common failure cases and the correct response
The login succeeds but no character appears
The account may have no data available through the requested Destiny 1 scope, or historical Companion visibility may be incomplete. The project should report “no readable records” and offer manual setup, not create a blank character and label it imported.
Only some appearance fields are returned
Use the returned values, show which fields were unavailable, and let the player edit the result. Do not silently substitute a face, hair style, or marking that changes the Guardian’s identity.
An item has no equivalent in the fan project
Leave it unmapped or record it as historical metadata. Granting a similarly named item without a documented conversion rule can affect balance and gives the impression of an official entitlement.
The player already has a project character
Present a comparison and offer create-new, update, or cancel actions. Store the mapper version so a later import can explain why a result changed.
The API is temporarily unavailable
Preserve the player’s pending request, display a retry option, and keep manual character creation available. Never interpret an HTTP error or timeout as proof that the Bungie account has no inventory.
Bottom line for players and developers
There is no Bungie-supported way to transfer a Destiny 1 Guardian and complete progress into a PC fan project. Cross Save cannot be used with Destiny 1, and the 2017 migration carried only limited identity and accomplishment information into Destiny 2 while excluding items, content, Silver and Eververse licenses. A fan project may be able to read selected Destiny 1 data through an API key and OAuth authorization, but that is an engineering integration with its own limitations—not a save transfer. The trustworthy implementation is a consent-based, previewable, reversible importer with a manual fallback.
