Can CS2 Demos Link Two Accounts to the Same Player? What a Master’s Thesis Reports

A reported NTNU thesis explores linking CS2 accounts through mouse and keyboard behavior in demos. Its headline results are author-reported, not proof of cheating or a deployed Valve feature.

A Counter-Strike 2 player says an NTNU master’s thesis found that mouse and keyboard patterns in game demos could help identify when different accounts are controlled by the same person. The author reported 100% identification with mouse data and 98% with keyboard data in the study’s evaluation. Those figures are not independently verified in the available coverage, and they do not show that Valve has deployed a player-tracking system or that the method can prove cheating.

What the thesis is trying to identify

The project asks whether a player’s mouse and keyboard behavior, as recorded in CS2 demos, is distinctive enough to recognize that player across gameplay observations or accounts. Its target is a possible match between accounts—not the player’s legal identity. The thesis author described the idea as recognizing “the person behind an account using nothing but the demos CS2 already records.” (Magga_, Reddit, October 4, 2026; Tom’s Hardware, October 8, 2026)

In principle, account linkage could help a platform review whether a newly created account belongs to someone whose earlier account was sanctioned. That is a proposed use, not evidence that Valve has adopted the thesis or that bans currently follow players this way.

What the reported numbers mean—and what they do not

Magga_ said the study covered more than 1,000 players, reported 100% player identification using mouse data, and reported 98% correct identification using keyboard fingerprinting. Tom’s Hardware repeated those figures. The author also said the thesis received an A; that grade is not independently confirmed in the available sources.

Claim Attribution and interpretation
More than 1,000 players Reported by the thesis author and described by Tom’s Hardware as the study’s scale.
100% identification with mouse data Reported result for the study’s evaluation; not established as real-world or population-wide accuracy.
98% correct identification with keyboard data Reported result for the study’s evaluation; the available coverage does not provide enough detail to infer a general error rate.
Grade A Reported by the author; not independently confirmed by the available sources.

The available reporting does not provide the full thesis or enough evaluation detail to judge how players were sampled, how data was separated between training and testing, or how often the system produced false matches. It also does not establish how results would hold up if a player changed equipment or playing conditions. For those reasons, “100% accurate” would overstate what the reported mouse result demonstrates.

Player matching is not cheat detection

Same-player verification asks whether two gameplay observations plausibly came from one person. Cheat detection asks whether a player used prohibited assistance, and enforcement asks what action is justified. A match between accounts can be a reason to examine them; it does not, by itself, show that either account cheated.

  • Play Longer : With 60-90 hours battery life and LIGHTSPEED Wireless, this rechargeable gaming mouse(with included USB-A to USB-C cable) delivers lag-free 8 kHz polling for uninterrupted focus

This distinction matters because the thesis is described as analyzing behavioral patterns in demos, not as detecting cheat software or proving a rule violation. The available evidence does not justify treating a behavioral match alone as grounds for an automatic ban.

How a separate CS2 study provides context

A different paper, Xuchen Zhang’s Same-Player Verification for Account Consistency in Counter-Strike 2, also studies whether demo-derived behavior can support account consistency checks. Its abstract describes signals including crosshair control, movement-stop-fire coordination, economy and buying behavior, combat engagement, and temporal rhythm.

That paper reports 1,330 demos and 13,300 demo-player observations. It reports an average ROC AUC of 0.931 for its pairwise model, with different-player recall of 0.722 at 95% precision; aggregating player history reaches a reported AUC of 0.986 at K=10. These are results from Zhang’s separate preprint, not from the NTNU thesis, and they do not independently validate the thesis’s figures. The work illustrates the broader research question—whether behavior can help distinguish players—not whether a linked player cheated.

What is established about the system’s status

The public account of the thesis presents cross-account recognition as a possible way to make enforcement harder to evade by replacing a banned account. The sources do not show that Valve has incorporated the research into CS2, that the system is operating in live matches, or that it has been independently tested for enforcement use. The most accurate description is a reported academic project with a proposed application, not a current Valve feature or a proven automatic cheat detector.
