Ireland’s Food Safety Authority recommends boiling imported frozen berries for one minute before eating them. That is Ireland’s berry-specific advice, not a universal rule. Follow your local food-safety guidance and the package directions—and discard berries covered by a recall rather than trying to wash or cook them safe.
Does washing frozen berries remove viruses?
Washing may help with ordinary produce hygiene, but the official guidance cited here does not establish that rinsing frozen berries reliably removes norovirus or hepatitis A virus. The FDA describes possible contamination from infected workers, agricultural water, and food-contact surfaces; its guidance focuses on prevention through the supply chain. Washing is not the heat treatment recommended by Ireland’s Food Safety Authority for imported frozen berries.

That does not mean washing has been shown to have no effect: the cited sources do not quantify how effective washing is on berries. The practical point is that washing alone is not an established virus-control step for frozen berries.

Does cooking make frozen berries safer?
Heat can reduce risk. The UK Food Standards Agency says proper cooking destroys norovirus. Ireland’s Food Safety Authority gives a more specific instruction for imported frozen berries: boil them for one minute before consumption, particularly when serving vulnerable people. The authority says it first issued that advice in 2013 during investigation of an Irish hepatitis A outbreak linked to imported frozen berries.

The one-minute instruction is Irish guidance for imported berries; it should not be treated as a universal cooking time for every country, berry, virus, or recipe. The cited sources do not establish a single validated home time-and-temperature treatment for all of those cases. Brief warming, partial thawing, or rinsing should not be assumed equivalent to boiling.
What should you do with ordinary frozen berries?
- Check the package directions and follow the food-safety advice that applies where you live.
- If you are in Ireland, follow the Food Safety Authority’s instruction to boil imported frozen berries for one minute before eating them.
- Prevent cross-contamination: keep hands, utensils, work surfaces, and ready-to-eat foods from contacting potentially contaminated berries or their juices. The UK Food Standards Agency warns about cross-contamination when handling food.
What if the berries have been recalled?
Do not eat recalled berries and do not try to salvage them by washing or cooking. The FDA’s 2023 frozen-strawberry outbreak notice told consumers to throw away recalled products. Recall advice applies to the named product, not to all frozen berries; check current notices from the relevant food authority if you are unsure whether a brand, origin, or lot is affected.

The FDA notice also advised unvaccinated people who had eaten the recalled berries during the previous two weeks to promptly consult a healthcare professional about post-exposure prophylaxis. That advice was specific to the recall and exposure described in the notice.
What do FDA’s frozen-berry tests tell consumers?
The FDA tested 1,558 samples of frozen strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries collected from November 2018 through September 2023: 585 strawberry, 528 raspberry, and 445 blackberry samples. It detected hepatitis A virus genetic material in eight samples and norovirus genetic material in ten; detection rates were below 1% for each of the three berry types.

These are results from a defined FDA sampling assignment, not an estimate of the chance that any particular bag will make someone ill. Detection of genetic material does not by itself prove that infectious virus was present. The agency reported no statistically significant difference in detection rates by domestic versus imported origin for any of the three berry types, and the assignment found no evidence linking violative products to outbreaks. Freezing preserves berries but generally does not inactivate viruses that may have entered the supply chain.
