Can Concrete Supercapacitors Power a Home? Capacity, Output, and Limits

Concrete supercapacitors show promise for structural energy storage, but household capacity estimates are not home-power demonstrations. See what the prototypes store, power and still leave unknown.

Not yet. Concrete supercapacitors have stored enough energy in laboratory prototypes to power small electronics, but no home-scale system has been shown powering a house. MIT estimates that about 5 m³ of an improved carbon–cement material could store roughly 10 kWh. That is a scale-up estimate for stored energy—not a measured residential installation or proof of useful household output.

What is a concrete supercapacitor?

MIT researchers call the material electron-conducting carbon concrete, or ec³. It is not a conventional chemical battery: it uses carbon–cement electrodes to store electrical charge, rather than relying on the same storage mechanism as a typical home battery.

Nanoscale carbon black dispersed through cement forms a connected conductive network. Ions in an electrolyte move through the material’s pores. A working cell combines two carbon–cement electrodes, a porous separator between them, current collectors and packaging. The 2025 study tested different electrolytes and stacked cells to increase voltage. The PNAS paper describes a 12 V module and a 9 V arch prototype integrated into load-bearing architectural elements.

How much energy can concrete store?

The answer depends on the electrolyte and on whether the figure describes a material result or a complete device. Energy capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh); it tells you how much energy is stored. It does not tell you how quickly a system can deliver that energy.

Reported result What it describes
Up to 2,207 Wh/m³ Best-performing material result in the 2025 PNAS study, using an organic electrolyte: a quaternary-ammonium salt in acetonitrile. PNAS, 2025.
About 210–230 Wh/m³ Results for tested aqueous KCl electrolyte conditions in the same study. PNAS, 2025.
304 Wh/m³ Reported energy density of the study’s 12 V stacked module using aqueous KCl; the module measured about 49.8 F. PNAS, 2025.

The highest figure is not the figure demonstrated by the 12 V module. The organic electrolyte enabled a higher operating voltage and the best reported material energy density; the small-device demonstrations used an aqueous KCl module with a much lower reported density. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable system ratings.

How much concrete would it take to power a house?

MIT News estimates that roughly 5 m³ of improved material could store about 10 kWh, which the article compares with average daily household energy use. The estimate is based on the improved material’s reported storage performance; it is not a measurement from a home installation. Actual household consumption varies, and a material-level energy estimate does not establish how much energy a complete system could usefully deliver. MIT News, October 1, 2025.

For historical context, MIT’s 2023 summary estimated about 45 m³ for the same nominal 10 kWh using the earlier design. That comparison illustrates the improvement in reported storage density, not a tested home system. MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2023.

What can the prototypes actually power?

The 12 V prototype powered a 12 V computer fan and charged a 5 V portable gaming console through a DC–DC converter. A separate 9 V miniature load-bearing arch powered an LED; MIT reported that the LED intensity varied under load. Researchers suggested variable output might have potential for structural monitoring, but that remains a prospective use, not an established monitoring product. MIT News, October 1, 2025.

  • Please Note: BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED. YOHAWJER included a battery tester is suitable for all types of batteries with the organizer but Does NOT include any batteries. Super convenient for you to distinguish which batteries need to be recycled

These demonstrations show that the prototypes can store and release energy to small loads. They do not establish a residential continuous or peak output rating in kilowatts (kW), nor do they show a home operating from ec³. A 10 kWh estimate alone cannot answer whether the system could run appliances: that also depends on output rate, usable energy, power conversion and the household’s demand.

What practical limits matter?

Self-discharge and storage time

In the paper’s controlled 12 V self-discharge test, the device with 10 mm electrodes lost about 15% of its voltage after one hour; the device with 1 mm electrodes lost nearly 60%. Thicker electrodes retained voltage longer in that test, but can slow charge and discharge kinetics. Voltage loss is not, by itself, a direct measurement of how much usable household energy remains. Strength versus storage

More carbon black can increase storage while somewhat reducing concrete strength, according to MIT’s 2023 summary. The 2025 study also found that mortar electrodes containing sand had 15–30% lower capacitance than cement-paste electrodes of equal dimensions. Sand makes the material more concrete-like, but this result points to a trade-off between structural composition and electrical performance. MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2023; PNAS, 2025.

Electrolyte and system design

Electrolyte choice changes performance: the study’s highest energy density used an organic electrolyte, while the demonstrated 12 V module used aqueous KCl. A material’s best reported result therefore does not, on its own, tell a homeowner what a complete installed system would store, deliver or require.

Commercial readiness and home installation

The cited work describes formulations, experimental cells and potential structural applications. It does not document a purchasable home-storage system, installation method, warranty, price or household certification. The reviewed sources also do not establish a qualified residential output rating or a measured cost for a complete system. ec³ should not be treated as an off-the-shelf home battery.

How to judge claims about concrete energy storage

For a home-storage comparison, ask whether a claim refers to electrode material, a tested module or a complete installed system. Then look for the figures that determine practical performance:

  • Usable energy: how many kWh the complete system can actually supply.
  • Output: continuous and peak power in kW, not just stored energy or voltage.
  • Retention: self-discharge over the hours or days the energy must be stored.
  • Space and structural role: occupied volume and how storage is integrated with a building.
  • Qualification and safety: durability, installation requirements and the electrolyte used.
  • Cost: measured cost for a complete system, rather than a projection based on material performance.

The published ec³ results provide research-stage material and prototype figures, but not the full residential-system information needed to evaluate it as a home battery.
