Commvault announced support for discovering, protecting and recovering supported local data associated with Claude Cowork and Claude Code on managed Windows and macOS laptops. The capability is not yet generally available: the September 30, 2026 announcement says it is expected in the coming months. Commvault says it will be offered through existing endpoint protection offerings, without a separate SKU or additional purchase.
What Commvault’s Claude support is meant to protect
The announcement describes a recovery path for work stored locally on managed endpoints, including agent configurations, prompt libraries, custom instructions, AI-generated content and tool-specific context. Commvault’s laptop documentation gives more concrete examples of user-generated local data and metadata, including artifacts, schedules, workspaces and chat sessions stored in a user profile.

That scope is not the same as backing up Claude as a whole. The documentation says the AI-agent application itself and generated source code are not backed up. Nor does the announcement establish that every file, conversation or artifact is covered across every product version and platform. Treat the specific data protected as dependent on Commvault’s supported scope and the customer’s configuration.

Availability and supported devices
Commvault’s September 30, 2026 announcement names Claude Cowork, Claude Code and OpenClaw, and describes support for local data on managed Windows and macOS devices. It says discovery, protection and recovery will become generally available “in the coming months”; it does not give an exact release date. As of October 3, 2026, the newly announced Claude capability should therefore be treated as forthcoming, not generally available.

The announcement does not publish a full operating-system, agent-version or regional support matrix. Before relying on it for a particular laptop, confirm that the endpoint, agent and required data are covered in the customer’s Commvault release and region.
How administrators add AI agents to laptop backup content
Commvault’s documentation describes adding AI agents to backup content at either the plan level or the laptop level. The plan-level instructions are for Commvault 11.42; the laptop instructions are documented in version 11.46. Menu labels can differ across releases, so check the instructions for the deployed version.

What to check before depending on recovery
- Confirm the target data. Identify which local configurations, conversations or other user-profile data need protection; do not assume generated source code or the agent application is included.
- Check which plan governs the laptop. Decide whether the agent should be added to shared plan content or configured for an individual laptop.
- Verify availability in your environment. The announcement gives no exact general-availability date or complete platform and region matrix.
- Test the recovery path. Confirm that the configured backup captures the specific supported data your users need and that administrators can restore it as expected.
What Commvault’s announcement does—and does not—establish
Commvault presents the feature as a way for IT and Security teams to gain visibility into supported agentic tools on managed devices and recover locally accumulated work after a laptop is lost, damaged or replaced. The company’s Chief Technology and AI Officer, Pranay Ahlawat, said: “We give IT and Security visibility into where these AI tools are installed, and a recovery path for the context employees have built inside them.” That is Commvault’s description of the capability, not an independent assessment of its coverage.
