Yes, code-specific scanners can distinguish some AI-generated code from human-written code in evaluated settings—but a scanner’s score does not prove who wrote a file or whether someone used an AI assistant. These systems look for patterns learned from examples, and results can change with the programming language, task, generating model, and amount of human editing. Treat a flag as a reason to investigate in context, not as a verdict about authorship.
What does an AI code scanner actually identify?
A code scanner estimates whether a submission resembles the examples or patterns it has learned to associate with machine-generated code. Depending on the system, it may return a label such as “AI-generated,” a score, or a ranking against other submissions. That is a classification of code characteristics—not a record of how the code came to exist.

A detector cannot infer from a score alone who typed each line, who prompted a model, whether a human reviewed or changed the output, or which tools were used. A file may contain entirely generated code, human code, or a mixture. A single label can obscure those differences, especially when a person has substantially edited AI output or used AI only for a small portion of a project.
This distinction matters in both education and software development. A suspicious-looking result might be useful as a lead, but it is not independent evidence that a particular student or developer used AI. The cited studies evaluate detection on datasets; they do not establish that a scanner can identify the author or reconstruct the process behind an individual real-world codebase.

How do code-specific detectors work?
Code detectors are not simply prose detectors applied to source files. Research methods can use characteristics of code and code-focused language models. One example, described by Zhenyu Xu and Victor S. Sheng in a paper published by the AAAI in 2024, uses code perplexity—the degree to which a language model finds a sequence predictable—as part of its analysis.
A perplexity-based example
In the method, the detector identifies higher-perplexity regions of code for masking, uses a fine-tuned CodeBERT model to fill masked portions, and combines several signals: overall perplexity, variation in perplexity from line to line, and burstiness. The method then uses the original code’s rank to help distinguish generated from human-written submissions. This is one research approach, not a description of every detector.
The intuition is that generated and human-written samples may differ in how predictable their tokens or structures are to a model. But predictability is a pattern, not a signature. Concise code, repeated idioms, boilerplate, a narrow assignment prompt, or consistent formatting can all affect how code looks to a detector. A score therefore depends on what the system learned and what it was asked to evaluate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsXu and Sheng’s abstract says, “However, there are currently no robust detectors designed specifically to identify AI-generated code.” That sentence describes the research landscape characterized by their paper, published March 24, 2024; it should not be read as a verified statement about every detector available in 2026. Their paper is available from the AAAI proceedings.

What do the published detection numbers mean?
Xu and Sheng report an average AUC of 0.87 for detecting code submissions generated by OpenAI text-davinci-003 in their experiment. The GPTZero baseline in that same study had an average AUC of 0.56. These figures describe the study’s setup, not current performance across code detectors, languages, assignments, or models.
AUC, or area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, measures how well a system ranks positive examples above negative ones across possible thresholds. It is not an accuracy percentage. An AUC of 0.87 does not mean that 87% of individual files will be correctly identified, nor does it mean there is an 87% chance a flagged file was written by AI. The result does not establish the reliability of a particular accusation.
| Reported result | What it applies to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Average AUC 0.87 | Code submissions generated by text-davinci-003 in Xu and Sheng’s 2024 experiment | Universal accuracy, performance on other models or languages, or the authorship of an individual file |
| Average AUC 0.56 | The GPTZero baseline in that same experiment | A current rating of that system or a comparison of today’s commercial products |
For any reported result, ask what counted as a positive example, what counted as human-written, which generator and language were used, and how the dataset matched the code being assessed. Also check the metric and threshold: a detector’s ranking ability can differ from how often its chosen yes-or-no cutoff produces false positives or false negatives in a particular setting.

Why can a detector fail on code it has not seen?
Performance on one dataset does not guarantee performance on another. A detector trained or evaluated on a narrow set of assignments may respond differently to repository code, production code, another programming language, a different type of task, or output from a generator that was not represented in its data.

The EMNLP 2025 paper Droid: A Resource Suite for AI-Generated Code Detection reports that existing detector performance fails to generalize across coding domains and programming languages beyond narrow training data. Its DroidCollection includes more than one million code samples, seven programming languages, outputs from 43 coding models, and three real-world coding domains. Those are dataset characteristics—not accuracy statistics or market-share figures.
The breadth of that collection helps illustrate how many conditions can change at once. A detector that performs well on one language or task may not have learned patterns that carry over to another. Even within the same language, a short classroom exercise and a large, established software project can have different conventions and code structures.
The EMNLP paper also includes fully generated code, human-AI co-authored code, and adversarial examples. It reports that superficial prompting to humanize outputs can compromise most of the detectors studied. This does not mean every edit defeats every scanner; it shows why performance on unedited, familiar examples is not enough to establish robustness. See the EMNLP 2025 paper and its resource suite.
What changes when a person and an AI work together?
Mixed authorship is harder to reduce to a binary label than the terms “human-written” and “AI-written” suggest. Someone might ask a model for a function, then rewrite it; use a suggestion for a few lines; accept generated scaffolding and implement the core logic themselves; or ask AI to explain code they already wrote. A detector that classifies the final file does not necessarily reveal those steps.

Editing can also change the patterns a detector uses. Refactoring, renaming variables, formatting, combining snippets, or making ordinary corrections may alter the signal, but the effect will depend on the detector and the code. The Droid study’s finding about humanizing prompts is a warning about robustness in its evaluated conditions, not a universal rule about which edits work.
For a classroom or workplace review, separate three questions: whether a tool flagged the code, what parts or patterns prompted the flag, and whether there is independent evidence about how the work was produced. The first answer is a scanner result. The second may help guide a closer technical review. The third cannot be supplied by a score alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you evaluate a scanner’s claims?
Before relying on a detector, look beyond a headline accuracy claim. A useful evaluation should resemble the intended use and disclose enough about its test data and threshold to interpret the result.
- Language: Was the programming language in question represented in both training and evaluation?
- Task and domain: Were examples comparable to the work being assessed—such as an assignment, repository contribution, or production code?
- Generator coverage: Were multiple code-generating models tested, including models held out from training?
- Human contribution: Did testing include AI-assisted edits, hybrid authorship, refactoring, and fully human-written code?
- Robustness: Were edited, humanized, or adversarial examples included?
- Metric and threshold: Is the result AUC, accuracy, F1, or another measure? What false-positive and false-negative trade-offs occur at the threshold the tool actually uses?
- Evidence standard: Is the output presented as a screening signal, or is someone treating it as proof of misconduct or authorship?
These checks align with issues raised in Droid and in CoDet-M4: Detecting Machine-Generated Code in Multi-Lingual, Multi-Generator and Multi-Domain Settings, a Findings of ACL 2025 paper. CoDet-M4 evaluates out-of-domain settings involving unseen models, domains, and languages, as well as hybrid authorship. That broader evaluation design is useful when judging a detector’s claims, but a benchmark is not a certification of accuracy in every real deployment. Read the CoDet-M4 paper for its evaluation scope.

What should you do if code is flagged?
Use a flag to decide where to look more closely, not to decide who is responsible. A fair review should account for the code and its context, and should distinguish a detector’s output from evidence of a person’s conduct.
- Confirm what was scanned. Check that the submitted file, language, and relevant portions were processed as intended. A result for one file or excerpt should not be generalized to an entire project.
- Read the code in context. Consider the assignment or repository, common idioms, reused libraries, boilerplate, and coding conventions that could make a human-written sample look predictable or familiar.
- Ask for an explanation. Invite the student or developer to explain design choices, walk through the implementation, or describe how a particular section works. An explanation is additional context, not a mechanical test that proves authorship.
- Consider independent artifacts where available. Version history, drafts, development notes, or other project records can help establish how work evolved. They should be interpreted carefully and alongside the person’s account; the cited studies do not validate a particular forensic review procedure.
- Apply the relevant rules consistently. If a course or workplace has a policy on AI assistance, assess the work against that policy rather than assuming that any AI involvement is prohibited.
Do not turn a numerical score into a probability of misconduct unless the system has been validated for the relevant population, task, and decision threshold—and the result is interpreted within that validation. The cited research supports careful screening and evaluation; it does not establish a universal forensic standard or verify current commercial products’ performance.
Can AI detectors detect ChatGPT code?
A detector may identify some code generated by a particular model in a particular evaluated setting. Xu and Sheng’s 2024 result concerns submissions generated by text-davinci-003; it does not establish performance on all ChatGPT models, all code tasks, or code that has been edited. A result for one model and dataset should not be generalized to a different model or an individual submission.

No. A flag indicates that the code matched patterns used by the detector, not who produced it or whether a student used AI. Treat it as a prompt for contextual review and corroborating information, not as proof by itself.
