Can Co-Packaged Optics Be Repaired or Upgraded Without Replacing the Switch?

External lasers may be field-replaceable in some CPO switches. Optical-engine repair and upgrades are a separate question that must be confirmed for the exact model and service contract.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sometimes—but usually the part that can be replaced is the external laser source, not the optical engine integrated with the switch. NVIDIA describes its external laser source modules as field-replaceable, and Broadcom has described remote laser modules in its Bailly platform as designed for field replacement. Neither statement establishes that the optical engine can be repaired or upgraded independently of the switch package. For that, the answer depends on the exact switch model and its service policy.

Why CPO changes the repair question

With conventional pluggable optics, a transceiver sits in a front-panel port and connects electrically to the switch ASIC. When a transceiver fails, an operator can generally treat it as a separate module. Co-packaged optics (CPO) moves the optical engines close to, or onto the same package as, the switch silicon. Broadcom describes its approach as heterogeneous integration of optics and silicon on a single packaged substrate; NVIDIA describes silicon photonics packaged with the ASIC in place of pluggable transceivers.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Keeping optics close to the switch silicon can shorten electrical paths and reduce power, but it also changes the service boundary. A CPO optical engine is not automatically a front-panel component that an operator can pull out. A system may still include a replaceable external laser source or accessible fiber connections, but those are distinct from the optical engine. The practical question is therefore not simply whether “CPO” is repairable: it is which component failed, what the manufacturer permits the customer to replace, and what assembly the service process requires.

Which parts may be serviceable?

Component What the available vendor material establishes What it does not establish
External laser source (ELS) or remote laser module (RLM) NVIDIA says its ELS modules are field-replaceable and can be swapped without disturbing surrounding switch infrastructure. Broadcom said its Bailly CPO system was designed to support multiple RLMs for field replaceability. These are design-specific statements; they do not mean every CPO switch has a customer-replaceable laser, or specify hot-swap support for every model.
Optical engine The cited platform descriptions place the optical engine with the switch package or ASIC. They do not document a general engine-only field-replacement or upgrade procedure, nor say whether a particular engine failure requires depot service, replacement of a larger assembly, or a new switch.
Fiber and connectors NVIDIA describes fiber connections between external lasers and optical engines and fiber/connector components in the ecosystem. That does not establish that every connection is customer-serviceable or specify a cleaning method for every switch. Use the exact vendor-approved inspection and cleaning instructions.

The distinction matters when diagnosing a fault. A problem with an external source or an accessible fiber connection is not the same repair as a failure in an optical engine integrated with the switch package. Ask the vendor to identify the affected part and the approved remedy rather than assuming that every optical fault has the same replacement procedure.

What “repairable” can mean in practice

A vendor may describe a laser module as field-replaceable while handling an optical-engine failure through a different service route. Those statements are compatible: replacing a separate source does not require replacing the integrated engine, and being able to replace the source says nothing by itself about the engine’s repair boundary.

For a service decision, separate at least four outcomes:

  • Customer-replaceable component: an approved module or fiber assembly the operator can replace under the platform’s service instructions.
  • Onsite vendor service: a technician replaces or services a component at the data center. Confirm whether that is supported for the specific part and contract.
  • Depot repair or assembly exchange: the failed unit is sent away, or a larger assembly is replaced. The cited platform descriptions do not establish whether either option applies to a given engine.
  • Switch replacement: the vendor supplies a replacement switch. The descriptions do not prove that this is the required remedy for every engine failure.

Do not treat “field-replaceable” as synonymous with “hot-swappable.” NVIDIA’s statement supports field replacement of its ELS modules without disturbing surrounding switch infrastructure, but it does not provide a universal hot-swap guarantee or a procedure for every switch model. Confirm whether traffic must be drained, the switch powered down, or an approved service window scheduled. Also ask whether the procedure requires trained personnel, special tools, or a vendor service visit; do not infer those requirements from a general product-family description.

Can an optical engine be upgraded separately?

The cited vendor material does not establish that an optical engine can be upgraded independently while retaining the existing switch ASIC or chassis. It also does not establish a cross-generation interchangeability policy. A platform might have a vendor service or product-refresh path, but an operator should not infer one from the presence of replaceable external lasers or accessible fibers.

Ask the manufacturer to distinguish an upgrade from a repair. An upgrade changes capability or generation; a repair restores a failed system to an approved configuration. The answer may differ for a replacement engine, a revised package, a different ASIC generation, or a software release. Get confirmation for the exact switch revision and part numbers rather than relying on a platform-family description. A part that fits physically is not, by itself, evidence that it is supported with a particular ASIC, revision, or software release.

How to establish the service boundary before deployment

  1. Identify the exact system. Record the switch model, hardware revision, ASIC generation, optical configuration, and software release. Ask the vendor to answer for that combination, not just for CPO generally.
  2. Request a component-level replacement map. Have the vendor identify which ELS/RLM, fiber assemblies, connectors, optical engines, packages, and chassis parts are customer-replaceable, technician-serviceable, depot-serviceable, or exchanged as a larger unit.
  3. Clarify laser replacement conditions. Ask whether the source is field-replaceable on this model, whether the switch can remain in service during replacement, and whether the procedure requires a traffic drain, shutdown, or special tools.
  4. Get the optical-engine failure remedy in writing. Ask whether an engine can be replaced independently of the ASIC and package, where that work is done, and what replacement assembly is supplied if an engine fails.
  5. Check upgrade compatibility. Ask whether engine part numbers are interchangeable across switch revisions, ASIC generations, and software releases. Confirm whether an engine upgrade is supported or whether it requires a different package or switch.
  6. Confirm fiber maintenance instructions. Determine which connectors are accessible to the customer and obtain the approved inspection and cleaning procedure for the connector type. A serviceable connector is not evidence that the integrated engine is repairable.
  7. Review support logistics. Confirm spare-part availability, warranty coverage, service-level commitments, advance replacement terms, and whether onsite or depot service is covered for each component.

These answers affect outage planning and spare strategy. If only the external laser is replaceable onsite, stocking that source may address one failure mode but not an engine failure. If the engine remedy is an assembly exchange or depot repair, the expected restoration time and the spare to hold may be different. Ask the vendor to map each part to its actual support process rather than treating “CPO serviceability” as one yes-or-no feature.

How to compare CPO service policies

When comparing two CPO platforms, look beyond whether each vendor uses the phrase “field-replaceable.” Compare the actual service boundary and terms for the same categories:

  • External laser: Is the ELS/RLM replaceable by the customer or only by a technician? Is it hot-swappable on this model, or does replacement require a traffic drain or shutdown?
  • Optical engine: Can the engine be exchanged independently of the switch ASIC and package? If so, where is the work performed and which part numbers are supported?
  • Failure response: Is service onsite, depot-based, or a larger assembly exchange? What restoration commitment applies to each component?
  • Upgrade path: Are engines compatible across switch revisions, ASIC generations, and software releases, or does an upgrade require a new package or switch?
  • Parts and coverage: Are spares available, and do warranty and service-level terms cover the laser, fiber assemblies, engine, and chassis separately?
  • Fiber access: Which connections can the customer reach, and what inspection and cleaning process does the vendor approve?

The documented examples support comparison of external-laser designs, but they do not provide a complete cross-vendor service matrix. Require answers for the intended configuration and contract. If a vendor cannot yet confirm an engine-only replacement or upgrade, treat that as an unresolved planning question—not as proof that a switch replacement is inevitable.

What vendor examples do—and do not—show

NVIDIA’s technical blog, “How Industry Collaboration Fosters NVIDIA Co-Packaged Optics,” says: “Each ELS module is engineered for modularity and field-replacement, allowing data-center operators to swap out units without disturbing the surrounding switch infrastructure.” The statement concerns the ELS module. It should not be read as a claim that the optical engine can be removed or upgraded independently.

Broadcom’s March 2024 announcement of its 51.2-Tbps Bailly CPO Ethernet switch platform said the design supports multiple remote laser modules for field replaceability. That is evidence for a replaceable-laser design, not a service matrix for all Broadcom CPO products or proof of engine-level replacement.

The examples are useful, but they do not provide a comparable cross-vendor account of engine replacement, onsite versus depot service, upgrade compatibility, spare availability, or warranty coverage. Those details need confirmation for the exact product and support contract.

Reliability and power figures are not repair guarantees

In an October 1, 2025 announcement, Broadcom reported one million cumulative 400G-equivalent port device hours of flap-free CPO operation at Meta. This is Broadcom’s report about that named deployment; it is not a guarantee for another system or a statement about how a failed engine is repaired.

Broadcom also reported 65 percent lower optics power compared with pluggable-module solutions in that 2025 announcement, and more than 70 percent optical-interconnect power savings for its Bailly system in its March 2024 announcement. These are vendor-reported comparisons tied to their respective announcements, not independent industry-wide measurements. Power consumption and reported operating hours do not establish whether an optical engine is independently field-replaceable or upgradeable.

Broadcom’s CPO product information also advertises greater than 3.5× power-consumption savings and 40 percent lower optics cost per bit. Those figures are vendor-page claims; a publication date and comparison methodology are not shown alongside them. Treat them as claims to verify, not universal estimates of savings or service cost. None of these power, reliability, or cost figures tells an operator whether an engine can be repaired separately, how quickly a failed unit can be restored, or which replacement parts the support contract covers.

Questions to get answered before choosing a CPO switch

  • Is the ELS or RLM field-replaceable on this exact model, and is it hot-swappable?
  • Can a failed optical engine be replaced independently of the switch ASIC and package?
  • Is engine work performed onsite, at a depot, or by exchanging a larger assembly?
  • Can an engine be upgraded or interchanged across hardware revisions, ASIC generations, or software releases?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace a CPO optical engine without replacing the switch?

It depends on the exact platform and service policy. The vendor descriptions cited here establish field-replaceable external laser examples, but do not document a general optical-engine-only replacement procedure. Ask whether the engine is replaced onsite, at a depot, as part of a larger assembly, or only through switch replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a field-replaceable external laser mean the CPO switch is hot-swappable?

No. NVIDIA describes its ELS modules as field-replaceable without disturbing surrounding switch infrastructure, but that does not establish hot-swap support for every model. Confirm whether traffic must be drained, power removed, or a service window scheduled.

Can a CPO optical engine be upgraded independently?

The cited vendor material does not establish an independent engine upgrade path that retains the existing ASIC or chassis. Ask the vendor to confirm supported part numbers and compatibility for the exact switch revision, ASIC generation, and software release.

Can I clean or replace the fiber connections myself?

Some fiber connections may be accessible, but accessibility alone does not make them customer-serviceable. Ask which connectors and assemblies you may handle and follow the vendor-approved inspection and cleaning procedure for that connector type.

What should I compare when choosing between CPO switches?

Compare external-laser replaceability, the optical-engine replacement boundary, onsite versus depot service, cross-generation upgrade compatibility, spare availability and warranty terms, and fiber access and maintenance procedures. Get each answer for the exact configuration and support contract.

The Bottom Line

Sometimes, but do not confuse a replaceable external laser with a replaceable optical engine. NVIDIA and Broadcom have described field-replaceable laser designs, while the cited vendor material does not establish a general engine-only repair or upgrade path. Before deployment, get a written, model-specific component replacement map and confirm the service location, compatibility, spare, warranty, and outage requirements for each part.
