Can Claude edit a Google Doc?
Not through an editing workflow established by Anthropic’s native Google Drive documentation. The documented workflow lets Claude use a Doc’s text to inform its response; it does not say Claude can modify the original document or save a revised copy to Google Drive. You can ask Claude to draft or revise text in its response, but that is different from changing the connected Doc itself.

How to give Claude a Google Doc as context
- Use a paid Claude plan. Anthropic documents Google Drive integration availability for paid plans.
- Make sure you can view the document in Google Drive. Claude requires your account to have view permission.
- Add the Doc to a chat or private Project. In a chat, select a recent document or paste its URL. You can also add Docs to private Project knowledge.
- Ask Claude to work with the text. It can process the connected document as context for its response; this documented workflow does not write changes back to the Doc.
Anthropic says connected Docs sync with Drive and continue to reflect the latest version. If you lose access to a document, its preview is removed. Details are in Anthropic’s Google Drive integration guidance.

What content from a Doc can Claude process?
- Size: The integration supports Google Docs up to 10 MB.
- Text: It extracts text from the document.
- Images: Images in synced Docs are not interpreted.
- Comments and suggestions: These are not visible to Claude through the integration.
These limits matter if the information you want Claude to assess appears in a chart, screenshot, comment thread, or suggested edit rather than in the document’s text.

Anthropic describes connected tools broadly as able to provide data and take actions, and its custom-connector documentation explains how remote MCP servers can connect Claude to external services. Those general descriptions do not confirm that a particular connector can edit Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides. If you are considering another connector, check its specific Google app coverage, whether it offers write or edit actions, which account permissions it requires, and whether it asks you to confirm changes. Connector capabilities depend on the connector itself; general support for actions is not proof of Google editing support.
