Yes. Sonos offers an official connector called Sonos 27mcp that lets Claude control an authorized Sonos system using natural-language requests. Its documented controls include playback, volume, grouping, Favorites and playlists, and selected home-theater functions. The official connection is remote and cloud-mediated—not Claude directly controlling a speaker over your home network. So, can Claude control your Sonos over MCP, and what can the Sonos APIs actually do? The answer depends on which Sonos interface you mean.
What Claude can do through Sonos 27mcp
Sonos describes 27mcp as a connector for MCP-capable AI assistants, including Claude. After you authorize the connection, you can ask it to control supported parts of your system in natural language. - Start, pause, skip, or seek playback, and play music from connected services.
- Adjust volume or mute an individual product or group.
- Group products or move audio between them.
- Play Sonos Favorites and playlists, and change shuffle or repeat.
- Use line-in and supported home-theater controls, including Night Sound and Speech Enhancement.
Sonos says the connector supports content services that work with Sonos Voice Control and 27voice. That is a defined feature list, not a claim that every Sonos feature, service, or API operation is available through Claude. For example, the 27mcp guide does not promise that every setting exposed elsewhere in Sonos can be changed by the assistant.
How to connect Claude to Sonos
The steps below follow Sonos’s documented Claude setup. Claude must be authorized before it can control the system.

- In Claude, open Settings > Connectors and find Sonos.
- Select the Sonos connector and start the connection.
- Approve the Sonos Cloud MCP authorization request from Anthropic.
- Sign in to your Sonos system, review the requested permissions, and approve them.
- Start a new chat and ask Claude to perform a supported action.
For other MCP-capable clients, Sonos provides the remote server endpoint https://mcp.ws.sonos.com/mcp. The registration steps depend on the client; use that assistant’s method for adding an MCP server rather than assuming its setup matches Claude’s built-in connector.
Does Claude talk to your speaker locally or through the cloud?
Through the official 27mcp connector, control is cloud-mediated. Sonos’s Control API routes commands through a cloud gateway to a household, group, session, or player. Sonos says, “The Control API on the LAN is not available for wide release,” and directs developers to the cloud API. Sonos Developer Documentation: Architecture.

There are two different connections to keep straight: Claude connects to the remote MCP service, and Sonos’s cloud Control API routes commands to the system. Anthropic says requests to remote MCP connectors originate from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure, including when using Claude Desktop or Cowork. This differs from a local MCP server configured separately in Claude Desktop, which uses the local network and is not available in claude.ai or Cowork. A local MCP setup is not the same thing as Sonos’s official remote 27mcp connector. Anthropic: Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP.

The Control API is Sonos’s JSON-based application interface for discovering and controlling Sonos players and groups, and subscribing to events. Its documented cloud gateway uses the base path api.ws.sonos.com/control/api/v1. For developers, the normal flow is to authorize an integration, discover households and players, issue commands, and optionally subscribe to group namespaces for state changes such as playback status, track metadata, shuffle, or repeat. Commands operate within Sonos groups
A household is the set of players associated with an account on the same network. Players always belong to a group, even when a group contains just one player. Members of a group play the same audio in synchrony. Transport actions such as play, pause, and skip target groups, and the cloud routes most commands to a group coordinator. This helps explain why asking to pause a room or move audio between rooms is a system-level operation, not simply a command sent directly to an isolated speaker.
Events do not guarantee a fixed command sequence
The API can provide state-change events, but Sonos does not guarantee that the cloud will preserve the order in which requests are processed by a player. A long instruction such as “start this playlist, group those rooms, then set different playback modes” should not be treated as a guaranteed, deterministic transaction. Sonos documents possible failures including invalid or missing parameters, insufficient permission, unknown or expired resources, and rate limits.

Control API and SMAPI are different interfaces
“Sonos APIs” does not refer to one universal interface. The two names most likely to be confused serve different purposes:

SMAPI is not the interface Claude uses to direct a speaker. Sonos documents it as the Music API used by Sonos to communicate with a service; the service implements servers that Sonos clients call. Can you control Sonos without enabling UPnP?
The official 27mcp setup guide does not instruct users to enable UPnP. Do not change connection-security settings as a prerequisite for this connector. Sonos lists Authentication as off, UPnP as on, and Guest Access as on by default in its connection-security guidance, and warns that changing defaults may interrupt integrations. Sonos labels UPnP unsupported; disabling it also prevents the Sonos apps for macOS and Windows from controlling the system. Sonos Support: Adjust Connection Security settings.

What to try if a command fails
- Test the same action in play.sonos.com. Sonos says that if it fails there too, the issue is likely not specific to 27mcp.
- If the action works in the Sonos app but fails through the assistant, check the assistant’s connector settings and authorization.
- Break a multi-part request into single actions. Sonos recommends simplifying complex commands and testing one action at a time.
- For a developer integration, check permissions, required parameters, whether the referenced resource is still valid, and whether requests are being rate-limited. Do not depend on the cloud to execute a series of commands in a fixed order.
