A separate drawing benchmark found that the listed GPT 5.6 Sol entry was much weaker at scale measurement and counting than at reading written information or looking up schedules. These results describe specific systems and tests—not a fixed accuracy rate for every version of ChatGPT.
Why a takeoff is harder than reading a drawing
A construction takeoff is the process of identifying and quantifying the work shown in project documents so it can inform an estimate or bill of quantities. Some tasks are straightforward information retrieval, such as finding a note or schedule entry. Others require the estimator to count tagged items, measure a dimension from a scaled plan, reconcile information across sheets, interpret specifications, or apply construction conventions that may not be spelled out in one place.

Those tasks are not interchangeable. A model that can read a written note accurately may still miscount symbols or misread scale. And a collection of plausible quantities is not necessarily a complete or correctly priced bid: missing scope or a mistaken assumption can change the result materially.

The civil estimate was wrong in more than one way
For its blind comparison, Civils.ai says it gave two general-purpose models—the Claude Sonnet 4.5 system and a GPT-4-class ChatGPT system—the same issued-for-construction drawing package and blank bill-of-quantities templates. A third-party chartered quantity surveyor produced the ground-truth quantities. Civils.ai attributes the ChatGPT bid’s shortfall to undercounted bulk earthwork, road build-ups read thinner than the pavement specification, missing drainage and communications-duct laterals and branches, and kerbing overestimated in some areas. The company’s report is useful as a warning about interacting scope and interpretation errors, but its single-project result should not be treated as the expected error on another job.

Drawing-question scores vary by task
The ContractorOS benchmark’s spread is a reminder to ask what a reported accuracy score measures. In the listed GPT 5.6 Sol entry, schedule lookup and reading written sheet information scored considerably higher than counting tagged items and measuring to scale. Those results indicate task variation within this benchmark; they do not establish the performance of other ChatGPT versions, prompts, plans, or drawing packages.
Dedicated software is not a guarantee either
The 2026 commercial-construction case study suggests that a purpose-built tool’s consistency can vary by element type: ceiling finishes aligned most closely with contractor data in the study, while exterior finishes deviated most. Separately, the Handoff-H1 preprint frames full material takeoff as a demanding visual and reasoning task, and reports different outcomes for general-purpose models, human estimators, and its purpose-built system on ten residential blueprint sets. Each result belongs to its own product, dataset, scoring method, and setting; none supplies a like-for-like ranking across the market.

How to use ChatGPT without treating its quantities as the answer
ChatGPT may assist with document review, organizing scope information, or drafting a takeoff worksheet. Keep an estimator responsible for validating quantities and assumptions before they affect a bid. A safer workflow is to use the model to make review more efficient, not to remove the review.
- Define the scope and documents. Specify the trade, drawing revisions, relevant sheets, specifications, and exclusions. Ask the model to flag missing or conflicting information rather than silently fill gaps.
- Separate extraction from measurement. Have it list written notes, schedule values, tagged items, and any proposed scaled measurements as distinct categories. Label assumptions and uncertain interpretations.
- Trace each quantity to its source. Require a sheet reference and the mark, note, or dimension supporting each line. If it cannot point to a verifiable source, treat that entry as unconfirmed.
- Check counts, scale, and cross-sheet scope independently. Compare counts against the drawing, verify dimensions and scale against known dimensions, and reconcile plan details with specifications and related sheets. A scale ruler can help with a manual check on a properly scaled printed plan, but it does not guarantee accuracy.
- Review high-impact and easy-to-miss items. Pay particular attention to earthwork, layered assemblies, branches and laterals, irregular geometry, and scope distributed across sheets. The Civils.ai test illustrates how such errors can coexist in one estimate.
- Price only after quantities and scope are checked. Confirm the unit, measurement basis, inclusions, and exclusions for every line before applying rates or using totals in a bid.
How to judge a takeoff tool’s claims
Ask for evidence on work resembling your own drawings and trade, and inspect the evaluation method rather than relying on a single headline percentage. A useful comparison should clarify whether it tests a text lookup, a count, a scaled dimension, a complete bill of quantities, or a priced bid. It should also show how it handles specifications and cross-sheet references, whether quantities link back to source marks, how it performs on unclear scope or irregular geometry, and what corrections a human must make.

Do not transfer a score from one product or model version to another, or from one drawing set and scoring definition to a different job. The sources above differ in systems, tasks, datasets, and evaluation methods; they do not establish one universal accuracy figure for ChatGPT or a direct commercial ranking of all takeoff tools.

Not on the evidence available here as an unsupervised source of bid-ready quantities. The tests show that AI can assist with some drawing and estimating tasks, but they also expose weaknesses in measurement, counting, scope interpretation, and element-specific consistency. Use its output as a reviewable draft, and have a qualified estimator verify the source documents, quantities, assumptions, and pricing before submission.
