Can Changing Your Router’s LAN IP Disconnect Devices? What to Check First

Changing a router’s LAN IP can end the settings-page session or disrupt clients still using the old subnet. Here’s what to check first.

Yes, changing a router’s LAN IP can disconnect you from its settings page immediately. It does not necessarily mean every device has lost internet access: if the router moved to a different subnet, devices still using the old address settings may need to obtain new ones. First try the router’s new address, then check the affected device’s IP address, subnet, gateway, and DHCP settings.

First, distinguish a lost settings page from a lost connection

When the router applies a new LAN IP, its management page is now at that address. NETGEAR says the browser connection ends when its documented Nighthawk setting change takes effect; reopen the browser and connect using the new LAN IP. The exact menus and behavior depend on the router model. NETGEAR’s Nighthawk instructions describe that model-specific process.

If the new address does not load, that alone does not establish that all devices have lost network service. Test whether the problem is only access to the router’s management page or whether the device also cannot reach other devices or the internet.

Check whether the router moved to a different subnet

The router’s LAN IP and subnet mask define the local subnet. If the new LAN settings put the router on a different subnet, a client that still has an address, subnet mask, or default gateway from the old one may no longer be able to communicate correctly with it. TP-Link explains this relationship in its Archer AX10/AX1500 network settings guide; the menus and behavior should not be assumed to match every router.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Look up the device’s current IP address and subnet mask in its network settings.
  • Compare them with the router’s new LAN address and subnet mask. The client needs settings that place it on the router’s new LAN.
  • Check the default gateway as well. It should point to the router’s address on that LAN.

Check the DHCP pool and the client’s address method

DHCP is the service that assigns network addresses to clients. If it is enabled, its address pool needs to fit the router’s new LAN range. NETGEAR documents that changing the LAN IP settings changes the default DHCP server’s address range on its BR500 router. Linksys likewise instructs users to set the DHCP start address in the same range as the router’s new address. These are model-specific instructions, not a universal description of every router’s interface.

Check whether the affected device gets its address automatically or has a manually configured static address:

  • DHCP client: Give it a chance to obtain current settings. If it remains offline, reconnect it to the network or use the operating system’s network controls to renew its address; the exact controls vary by device.
  • Static-address client: Update its IP address, subnet mask, and gateway to fit the new LAN. A computer with a static address outside the new subnet may not be able to reach the router’s new management address.

Linksys describes DHCP’s role in assigning client addresses in its Connectivity Tool overview, and its router IP-change instructions show how its interface handles the DHCP range.

If you still cannot open the router settings

  1. Confirm the new LAN IP you applied, then enter that address directly in a newly opened browser window.
  2. Check that the computer or phone is connected to the router’s network and has an address in the new subnet.
  3. If the computer uses a static address, temporarily configure an address in the router’s new LAN subnet, with the matching subnet mask. D-Link’s DSR-1000AC manual says a management host must either receive an address from the new pool or use a static address in the new LAN subnet to reach the changed router address.
  4. If DHCP is enabled, reconnect the client or renew its address through its operating system’s network controls, then try the new router address again.

For a different router model, consult its own manual for the management address and DHCP controls. D-Link’s DSR-1000AC manual gives the static-host check; it should not be treated as a menu guide for other products.

When a reboot may be relevant

Do not assume every LAN IP change requires restarting the router or every connected device. TP-Link notes a reboot for its ISP-customized modem-router guidance, which may not apply to other models. Follow the instructions for the specific router if they call for one. TP-Link’s ISP-customized modem-router guidance is limited to that product context.

Changing a LAN IP can be useful when addressing conflicts, but it is not a routine fix every home network needs. D-Link gives an address conflict as one reason to change a router IP and identifies that address as the one used to access its web management interface. D-Link’s router IP guidance is specific to its documented product family.
