Changing DNS can reduce exposure of your website lookups and, with a filtering resolver, block some domains associated with malware. It does not erase browser history or hide every destination from your internet provider, network administrator, or other observers. The key distinction is whether your device uses encrypted DNS—and who operates the resolver receiving your queries.
What DNS does when you visit a website
DNS is the internet’s directory lookup. When you enter a domain such as example.com, your device asks a DNS resolver for the address it should connect to. The browser then connects to the server; DNS is not the whole web session and does not carry all the page content.

With traditional DNS, queries are often sent in plaintext. An observer on the path between your device and the resolver—such as someone operating a Wi-Fi network or your internet service provider (ISP)—may be able to read those lookups. Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 Public DNS Resolver privacy documentation describes this visibility problem, but a DNS query alone does not reveal every page, action, or piece of content in a browsing session.
What changing DNS can protect
Encrypting the lookup between your device and resolver
Changing to a different resolver does not by itself encrypt DNS. The transport matters: DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) encrypt the query between your device and the resolver. If your device actually uses that encrypted connection and it is not blocked or bypassed, observers on the network path cannot read the DNS query contents as they could with plaintext DNS. Cloudflare explains the distinction in its DNS encryption documentation.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Blocking some risky domains
A resolver may also filter lookups. Cloudflare offers a standard unfiltered public resolver, a malware-filtering option, and a Families option that filters malware and adult-content domains. This can prevent a device from resolving some domains in those categories. It is a domain-level safeguard, not a guarantee against every malicious site, download, or attack; it does not replace updated software, device protections, or careful account security. See Cloudflare’s resolver setup and filtering instructions for its current options and tests.
What DNS changes do not hide
Your local browser history
Changing the resolver does not delete the history stored in your browser or on your device. Anyone with access to that device or a synchronized browser account may still see records stored there.

Every destination from your ISP or network
Encrypted DNS hides the query contents from on-path observers, not every clue about a connection. Other connection details can still expose destinations; Mozilla’s Firefox FAQ discusses possible leakage through Server Name Indication (SNI). In an October 21, 2021 report covering six major US ISPs, the Federal Trade Commission found that some of the providers examined continued to store destination IP addresses despite encryption. That is evidence of a limitation in the studied cases, not a current survey of all ISPs. The report is available from the FTC.

Encryption protects the query in transit to the resolver; the resolver must still process the domain lookup. It therefore becomes a party you have to trust. Cloudflare’s public-resolver documentation, updated May 6, 2026, says its logs contain query names and related metadata, that specified logs are retained for up to 25 hours, that source IP addresses are truncated, and that limited anonymized data is shared with APNIC under a research agreement. These are Cloudflare’s stated practices for its public resolver, not guarantees about other providers; policies can change. Read the provider’s own privacy documentation before choosing it.

Which DNS option fits your situation?
| Choice | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Plain DNS | Uses the configured resolver without encrypting the lookup. | Observers between device and resolver may read query contents. |
| DoH or DoT | Encrypts DNS queries between device and resolver. | The resolver can process the queries, and other connection details may still reveal destinations. |
| Filtering resolver | Blocks lookups to domains in selected categories, depending on the provider and filter. | Filtering is not comprehensive threat protection; check categories and possible false positives for the specific service. |
| Oblivious DoH (ODoH) | Separates the client address and query between a proxy and target; Cloudflare says no single party sees both if they do not collude. | It is not a default or universal setup. Cloudflare identifies RFC 9230 as experimental and says ODoH is not endorsed by the IETF. Details are in its encryption documentation. |
These options address different things: transport privacy, resolver trust, filtering, and broader traffic privacy are not interchangeable. No single DNS setting makes a user anonymous or conceals a complete browsing session.
Check network controls before switching
A browser configured to use a third-party DoH resolver may bypass the DNS resolver used by a workplace, school, or household for filtering, parental controls, or internal domains. Mozilla describes these trade-offs and notes that Firefox uses policies and heuristics to avoid breaking some controls. On a managed device or network, check with its administrator before changing DNS. Firefox-specific behavior and settings can vary by version, locale, and network; consult Mozilla’s Firefox DoH FAQ.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to think about the change
- If your goal is to prevent a local network from reading plaintext DNS lookups, verify that the device or browser is actually using DoH or DoT—not merely a different resolver address.
- If your goal is domain filtering, choose a resolver with categories that fit your needs and verify its behavior using that provider’s own tests.
- If you need organizational or parental DNS controls, confirm that encrypted DNS will not bypass them.
- If your goal is to erase local history or conceal all browsing destinations, DNS is not the solution; it changes only one part of how connections are made.
Cloudflare says its public resolver is free and can be configured without special software, though the steps depend on the device, browser, router, and network. DNSSEC is a separate feature: it validates signed DNS responses but does not encrypt queries. Mozilla explains the distinction in its DNS over HTTPS FAQ.
