Cellulose can be converted into furan chemicals, but it does not simply turn straight into finished fuel. In the direct-cellulose studies covered here, the main product is often 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF); furfural is more commonly associated with hemicellulose or mixed biomass routes. Either way, producing a fuel-range hydrocarbon requires additional processing.
Can you make fuel from cellulose?
Yes, in principle—but the route is a chain of conversions, not a single step from cellulose to a usable fuel. Cellulose is a polymer of glucose. Processing it can produce furan platform chemicals, which can then be upgraded into hydrocarbons. A fuel-range product is not automatically a finished, specification-compliant fuel.

Furfural is one possible intermediate in biomass conversion. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science describes it as “a potential building block for hydrocarbon fuels and other economically important chemicals” in its 2012 research summary. The word “building block” matters: furfural is a chemical feedstock, not a fuel you can put directly into an engine.
Does cellulose turn into furfural or HMF?
It depends on the feedstock and process. Cellulose is made of glucose units, while hemicellulose contains a different mix of sugars, including pentoses commonly used to make furfural. Direct cellulose-conversion studies highlighted here emphasize HMF, while furfural may be made from hemicellulose or from mixed lignocellulosic material.

Direct cellulose conversion to HMF
A 2009 study reported that, under its best conditions, 42% of dry cellulose mass was converted to HMF. A Pacific Northwest National Laboratory research record for a separate process using paired metal chlorides in an ionic-liquid solvent at 80–120 °C reported a 56% HMF yield and 95% selectivity among recoverable products. These are study-specific results, not general expectations for processing cellulose.
Mixed biomass and cellulose-derived intermediates
A 2009 study also reported conversion of 19% of dry corn-stover mass into HMF and furfural in one step. This uses a mixed feedstock, not purified cellulose, and the figure’s basis differs from the study’s dry-cellulose-to-HMF result.

In a 2013 mechanocatalytic study, solid biomass was first depolymerized into water-soluble oligosaccharides, then treated by microwave heating in a biphasic reactor. Starting with alpha-cellulose at 443 K for nine minutes, the authors reported yields of 79% HMF and 80% furfural. Those laboratory yields and conditions are specific to that study; they do not establish a routine yield or commercial process.

These figures cannot be ranked as if they were measured on the same basis: the feedstocks, products, conditions, and reported yield measures differ. “Furfural from cellulose” may describe a route involving cellulose-derived intermediates or mixed biomass, but it should not be taken to mean cellulose selectively or routinely becomes furfural.

How is furfural upgraded into fuel-range hydrocarbons?
Furfural must undergo further chemical reactions to add carbon-carbon bonds and remove oxygen. Depending on the pathway, these steps can include coupling or condensation, dehydration, hydrogenation, and hydrodeoxygenation.
Coupling followed by dehydration and hydrogenation
A 2012 study reported coupling furfural and related aldehydes into fuel precursors containing 10–14 carbon atoms. In the reported route, dehydration and hydrogenation then produced straight or branched C8–C14 alkanes. These are research results under the study’s conditions, not evidence of routine commercial fuel production. Read the RSC study.

Separating corncob fractions for bio-jet-range products
A corncob process study used hemicellulose to make furfural and cellulose to make levulinic acid. The two intermediates were then combined through condensation and hydroprocessing to produce hydrocarbons in the bio-jet-fuel range. The paper reports laboratory measurements and a techno-economic analysis of a pilot-scale facility; a pilot analysis is not proof of commercial deployment. Read the process study.

A modular route reported in a 2026 abstract
A 2026 abstract describes converting biomass-derived furfural through cyclopentanone conversion, condensation, and hydrodeoxygenation to produce C10–C17 monocyclic hydrocarbons. It also gives a simplified mass-balance estimate; that estimate is theoretical, not observed commercial output. Read the abstract.

How should you compare the reported results?
A percentage alone does not tell you which route performs better. Before comparing studies, check what went into the process, what the percentage measures, and how far the product is from a usable fuel.
- Feedstock: Purified cellulose, alpha-cellulose, corn stover, corncob, and mixed lignocellulose are not interchangeable. In the corncob route, furfural comes from hemicellulose while levulinic acid comes from cellulose.
- Product and yield basis: HMF yield, furfural yield, selectivity, and conversion of feedstock mass are different measures. The reported 42% dry-cellulose-to-HMF figure and 19% dry-corn-stover-to-HMF-and-furfural figure have different feedstock and product bases.
- Conditions: Temperature, reaction time, solvent, catalyst, microwave treatment, and other process details can materially affect results.
- Upgrading and product range: A furan intermediate is not an alkane. Note which upgrading steps were used and whether the output is a precursor, a hydrocarbon blendstock, or a finished fuel that meets a required specification.
- Evidence type: A laboratory experiment, a process model, a pilot-facility analysis, and commercial operation are different levels of evidence.
The cited material does not provide a common-basis comparison of lifecycle emissions, net energy balance, or cost, so it cannot support a reliable ranking on those outcomes.
Is furfural fuel production commercially available?
The studies and records described here establish experimental conversion routes and, in one case, analysis of a pilot-scale facility. They do not establish that cellulose-to-fuel production through furfural is currently deployed commercially at scale. Nor do the reported carbon-number ranges alone establish that the resulting hydrocarbons meet aviation, diesel, or other finished-fuel specifications.
