Calorie restriction can raise the risk of nutrient inadequacy when eating less also means eating too little overall, narrowing food choices, or cutting out important nutrient sources. It does not automatically cause a deficiency: a reduced-calorie eating pattern can still be varied and nutrient-dense. Symptoms alone cannot identify a particular deficiency, so persistent concerns or significant unintended weight loss deserve medical assessment.
Why eating fewer calories can affect nutrient intake
When portions shrink or entire food groups are excluded, it can become harder to get enough vitamins and minerals. The risk depends on what a person eats, not just the calorie total. The official guidance cited here does not establish a specific probability of deficiency for a given calorie deficit or dieting duration.

Body weight does not settle the question. The NHS notes that a person at a healthy weight—or with overweight—can still be malnourished if their diet does not provide enough vitamins or minerals. A calorie-restricted diet should therefore be judged by its nutritional variety and suitability, not by weight change alone.

The NHS lists the following as possible symptoms of malnutrition. They are nonspecific and can have causes other than inadequate nutrient intake; they do not reveal which nutrient, if any, is low.
#1 Best Overall
- Reduced appetite
- Persistent tiredness or weakness
- Getting ill often or taking longer to recover
- Slow wound healing
- Poor concentration
- Feeling cold
- Low mood
Contact a GP or other healthcare professional if these symptoms persist, or if you have substantial unintended weight loss. NHS guidance identifies losing 5% to 10% of body weight unintentionally over 3 to 6 months, a BMI below 18.5, and—in some people—a BMI below 20 as possible warning indicators. These are reasons to seek assessment, not tests that diagnose a particular nutrient deficiency. NHS: Malnutrition
How to make a reduced-calorie diet more varied
Build meals around a range of nutrient-dense foods rather than simply trying to eat as little as possible. NIDDK’s healthy eating guidance includes vegetables, whole fruit, whole grains, dairy or comparable soy beverages fortified with calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin D, varied protein foods, and certain oils. NIDDK: Choosing a Safe and Successful Weight-loss Program
- Vegetables and fruit: Include vegetables of different types and whole fruit.
- Grains: Choose whole grains as part of the pattern.
- Dairy or fortified alternatives: Include dairy or comparable soy beverages fortified with calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin D.
- Protein foods: Vary choices among lean meats, poultry, eggs, seafood, beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, and soy.
- Unsaturated-oil sources: Include suitable oils, including those found in seafood, nuts, and avocados.
What is appropriate depends on individual needs, medical conditions, dietary restrictions, and preferences. A weight-loss program is more than a calorie target: NIDDK describes it as including a healthy reduced-calorie eating and drinking plan, physical activity guidance when appropriate, support, and a plan for maintaining weight loss. A healthcare professional can help assess a safe approach and, where useful, refer you to a registered dietitian.
Should you take a multivitamin on a low-calorie diet?
Not automatically. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) says people on low-calorie diets, those with poor appetite, people who avoid certain foods, or those who do not get enough vitamins and minerals from food might consider a multivitamin/mineral supplement (MVM). ODS also emphasizes that food is the preferred source where possible and an MVM cannot replace a varied diet. NIH ODS: Multivitamin/mineral Supplements
Ask a healthcare provider whether a supplement is appropriate and which one fits your circumstances. Nutrient needs differ with age and other factors, and taking too much can increase the risk of side effects. Do not combine or double up on multivitamins or other supplements unless a healthcare provider advises it.
Why nutrient targets are individual
Reference values are not a single universal target. The Dietary Reference Intakes include different measures, such as Recommended Dietary Allowances, Adequate Intakes, and Tolerable Upper Intake Levels. Needs may differ by age and sex, and an individual’s circumstances can call for tailored advice. USDA: DRI Calculator and NIH ODS: Nutrient Recommendations provide general reference tools; they do not diagnose a deficiency or replace individualized clinical guidance.

Choosing an approach you can sustain
When evaluating a calorie-restricted plan, consider whether it preserves food variety, whether it removes important food groups without suitable alternatives, whether it fits your health needs and preferences, and whether you can maintain it over time. If you have a medical condition, special dietary needs, a highly restrictive eating pattern, or symptoms that concern you, involve a healthcare professional rather than relying on a generic menu or supplement. NIDDK’s guidance puts the point simply: “The key to losing weight is choosing a healthy eating plan that you can maintain over time.”
