Yes, if the browser running Browserless can reach the website. A public staging URL is usually the simplest case. Browserless Cloud does not automatically connect to localhost on your computer: the address is interpreted from the hosted browser’s environment. For a local development server or private staging site, run the browser somewhere with a route to the site and check network restrictions, URL protections, and authentication.
Why localhost behaves differently in Browserless Cloud
Browserless’s screenshot API loads the requested URL in a browser execution environment and returns an image; it does not use a browser on your workstation. Consequently, http://localhost:3000 ordinarily refers to the machine or container running that browser, not your laptop. So entering your local URL in a Cloud screenshot request does not, by itself, expose your development server. Use a browser execution environment that can reach the app, or establish an intentional, secured network path to it.

Public staging URL
Usually, provided the hosted browser can resolve the hostname, connect over the network, complete TLS, and load the page. Access controls, bot checks, or application behavior may still prevent a useful capture. Confirm the staging site permits the request and does not require an authentication step the browser session cannot complete.

Private staging URL
A private hostname or address is capturable only if the Browserless browser has a route to it and the relevant network policies allow access. For self-hosted Browserless, deployment placement gives the operator more control over that route, but self-hosting alone does not guarantee connectivity. Staging behind a login
There is no universal authentication setup established for every application. The result depends on the site’s login flow and how credentials are provided to the browser session. Check the integration and account configuration you plan to use rather than assuming a private staging page will load once its URL is reachable.

How to send a screenshot request
Browserless documents a POST request to /screenshot. The request needs an API token and a URL; screenshot options are optional. Output can be PNG, JPEG, or WebP depending on the options. The example below demonstrates the request shape; replace the endpoint and token with the values for your Browserless account, and use a URL reachable from the browser environment.

Choose capture options for the page
Browserless documents controls including full-page capture, output type, viewport or clip settings, element selection, and wait/configuration options. Choose them according to the page: for example, full-page capture for content below the fold, a viewport for a fixed-size preview, or an appropriate wait condition for a page that populates dynamically. These options affect the capture, not where the browser can connect.
What changes when you self-host Browserless?
With self-hosting, the browser runs in infrastructure you operate. Put it in a network that can reach the target, then verify host routing, firewall policy, DNS, and—if Docker is involved—the container network and port configuration. Browserless’s Docker guidance notes that access between containers requires suitable shared networking and a published port; access between hosts likewise depends on routing and firewall rules. Docker’s localhost is not your host’s localhost
Inside a container, localhost points to that container’s own network namespace. It does not automatically mean the Docker host or another container. If the app and Browserless are separate containers, configure appropriate shared networking and service addressing. If the app runs on the host, configure a route that the container can use; do not assume the host’s loopback address is reachable from inside it.
Check the Enterprise URL blocklist
Browserless Enterprise Docker documentation describes a built-in URL blocklist that prevents navigation to localhost, private IP addresses, and cloud metadata endpoints. The documented default is protection enabled; DISABLE_BLOCKLIST controls whether the blocklist is disabled. Even when the network route works, this policy can block the destination. Disabling a safeguard changes which destinations a request may target. Treat it as a security decision: assess the exposure and intended use, and do not turn it off as a routine troubleshooting step.

Troubleshooting failed localhost or staging captures
- The request times out or cannot connect: check whether the target is reachable from the Browserless browser environment—not just from your laptop. Verify DNS, routing, firewall policy, and container network configuration.
localhostopens the wrong service or nothing: identify which machine or container interprets the address. Use an address reachable from that environment instead of assuming it refers to your workstation.- A private IP or localhost target is rejected: if using Browserless Enterprise Docker, check the documented URL blocklist behavior and
DISABLE_BLOCKLISTsetting. Consider the security implications before changing it. Configuration reference - The URL loads but the screenshot shows a login page: the browser may not have completed the application’s authentication flow. Check how your chosen integration supplies credentials and whether that flow works for the app.
- Dynamic content is missing: choose a suitable wait or configuration option, and verify the page actually finishes rendering in the browser session. A wait setting cannot resolve a connectivity or access-control failure.
- You are submitting HTML and a URL together: Browserless documents these as alternatives for the request; send the
htmlfield or theurlfield, not both.
