Start by checking whether repair is safe and worthwhile
A device that will not turn on or has a damaged component is not automatically beyond repair. Identify its make, model, and symptoms, then check the warranty, official repair information, availability of parts, and a reputable model-specific repair guide. Repair access varies: the Federal Trade Commission notes that glued-in batteries, restricted parts, and missing instructions or software can make independent repairs harder. Before opening a device, look for a swollen, punctured, unusually hot, or otherwise damaged battery. Do not treat a generic toolkit or online tutorial as evidence that the repair is safe. The right tools depend on the exact model and job.

Donate or reuse only when the device and recipient are a fit
Donation is clearest when an electronic device works or can be restored to working condition. The EPA says reusing operating electronics extends their life; the FTC notes that charities can use slightly outdated but still-functioning gadgets. Neither point means every organization accepts broken equipment.
Ask the intended charity, school, community group, or reuse program directly whether it accepts the specific device in its current condition. Confirm whether it needs a charger, power adapter, or other accessories. If the device is broken, do not assume the recipient has the parts, staff, or budget to repair it.

Before handing over a phone, computer, or other device that stores information, use model-specific instructions to remove personal data. Check for storage cards, linked accounts, device locks, and backups as part of preparing it for transfer.

If you cannot repair the device safely or economically, and no suitable recipient accepts it, look for an electronics collection or take-back option. In the United States, possible starting points include your local government or solid-waste office, the manufacturer, a retailer, or a collection program. The EPA lists options and resources, but says it does not endorse individual providers or their services.

Check the provider’s current rules before travelling or shipping anything. Ask whether it accepts your device type and battery, whether there are fees, what preparation is required, and how it handles data on storage devices. These details can differ by location and program. The EPA’s electronics donation and recycling page can help you identify possible routes.
Where available, consider a recycler certified to R2 or e-Stewards, standards identified by the EPA. Certification is a useful screening factor, not a guarantee of a particular service’s fees, accepted items, or data-handling terms. The EPA encourages certification but does not endorse individual recyclers.

Handle lithium-ion batteries separately and carefully
The EPA says lithium-ion batteries—and devices containing them—should not go in household garbage or recycling bins. Check battery-specific collection instructions instead. The EPA also advises removing batteries before donating or recycling electronics where appropriate; some batteries need separate recycling.

Choose between repair, reuse, and recycling

For context, the EPA reports estimates attributed to the U.S. Geological Survey in 2006: recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent of electricity used by more than 3,500 U.S. homes in a year; recycling one million cell phones can recover 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium.
