Botan is an iPhone app that identifies plants from photos and offers care information, disease guidance, and collection tools. Its developer advertises 98% first-attempt accuracy, but that figure has not been independently verified for Botan. Treat its result as a starting point—not as proof of a plant’s identity or safety.
What Botan does
Botan App Limited LLC’s iPhone app lets you take or upload a photo and receive a suggested identification. The US App Store listing describes identification for plants, flowers, mushrooms, and trees, plus plant information, disease diagnosis and treatment advice, collections, and articles. Botan’s product page also advertises toxicity checks, garden customization, reminders, and environment tips such as pot diameter and soil pH. The company says its database contains more than 30,000 species; that is the publisher’s stated figure, not an independently audited count. Botan’s product page and its US App Store listing describe these features.

According to Botan’s FAQ, identified plants can be added to a collection, renamed or removed, and assigned notifications. In practical terms, the app combines a photo-based suggestion with follow-up care information; the listing does not establish that every feature or recommendation will be equally useful for every species or growing situation. How accurate is Botan?
Botan’s FAQ advertises “98%” first-attempt identification accuracy. That is the developer’s claim: the available materials do not describe a Botan-specific independent study, test sample, or protocol that would let readers verify it. Botan FAQ

Independent plant-identification research offers context, but not a Botan score. In a 2025 article in BSBI News, Hamlyn Jones reports that some other evaluated apps exceeded 80% species-level accuracy on the largely common European species studied; Flora Incognita reached 97% on one dataset retested with original images. Those results apply to the apps and datasets in that article, not to Botan. Jones also notes that even 95% accuracy means one incorrect identification in twenty and that photo quality matters. “Plant identification apps – five years on,” BSBI News 159, Spring 2025
Botan’s own privacy policy cautions: “We do not guarantee that AI Features will be 100% accurate. Plant identification results are provided as examples and suggestions only. You should not rely solely on the App’s AI-generated results for medical, safety, or critical decisions regarding plants (particularly regarding toxicity, edibility, or allergenic properties). Always verify results with additional sources or professional advice.” Follow that warning for poisonous lookalikes, edible plants, allergies, and any other safety-sensitive question. Does Botan diagnose plant diseases?
The US App Store listing advertises disease diagnosis and treatment advice. That makes the feature a possible aid to investigating a plant problem, not a confirmed diagnosis. A photo-based suggestion may not capture all relevant conditions, such as watering history, soil, pests, or the plant’s environment. Check the advice against reliable horticultural guidance before treating a valuable or badly affected plant. US App Store listing

The US App Store listing marks Botan as free with in-app purchases. When checked for this article, it displayed examples of a $14.99 monthly subscription and a $59.99 one-year subscription, alongside other purchase entries. These are US storefront examples, not a universal price list or a guarantee that the same offers will appear for every user. Before subscribing, review the offer shown on your own device, including any trial length, renewal date, and renewal price. Botan’s terms say subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled through the applicable store process. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. The listing includes individual customer reports about trial expectations and cancellations; those reports do not establish a general billing pattern. Botan terms of use
Does Botan work offline?
No, identification and analysis require an internet connection. Botan’s FAQ says a stable connection is needed for identification, analysis, recommendations, and other functions. If the connection drops after opening the app, taking a photo may still be possible, but analysis must wait until service returns. The US App Store listing says iPhone requires iOS 16.0 or later. What happens to photos you upload?
Botan’s privacy policy says photos submitted for identification are processed through Plant.ID, Pl@ntNet, and GPT models from OpenAI. It also says photos may be used to improve or train identification models, analyze plant patterns, and appear as examples on Botan’s public website. The policy says identifying information—including faces, people, and EXIF geolocation metadata—is removed before training or public display, and describes a right to object to future training and public display. Read the live policy and contact Botan if you want to understand or exercise that right. Botan privacy policy
Apple’s App Store privacy section says the developer indicated that data such as location, identifiers, and usage data may be used for tracking, and lists categories of information linked or not linked to identity. Apple notes that these privacy disclosures are provided by the developer and have not been verified by Apple. Check both the current store label and Botan’s policy for details rather than relying on a blanket description of the app as private or not private. US App Store listing

How to decide whether Botan is right for you
Compare the app against what you need, not just its headline accuracy claim. Useful questions include:
- Scope: Does it identify the kinds of plants you encounter, and do you want care, disease, toxicity, or collection features?
- Evidence: Is an accuracy claim independently tested for the species and region that matter to you? Do not treat results from other apps as Botan benchmarks.
- Photos and data: Are you comfortable with the stated processing, potential use of photos, and store privacy disclosures?
- Subscription: Is the displayed price and renewal schedule clear to you before starting?
- Practical use: Can you rely on an internet connection, and would reminders or a plant collection be useful?
The BSBI article provides independent comparison context for particular evaluated apps, but does not establish Botan’s relative accuracy. BSBI News 159, Spring 2025
