Apple reviews an AI-built app under its ordinary App Review Guidelines; the reviewed policy does not establish a separate approval track or exemption for AI-generated code. The decisive questions are what the submitted app does, whether it works and can be reviewed, and whether its code, payments, privacy practices, store listing, and content comply. Apple makes the developer responsible for the complete app, including third-party SDKs and services.
This guide explains the guideline families most likely to matter when preparing an app built with an AI coding assistant, app builder, or generated-code workflow. It is not a clause-by-clause account of Apple’s full, living guidelines, which also include category-specific and regional requirements. Check the current official wording before submitting, especially for payment rules and exceptions that depend on the app and storefront.

Why did Apple reject my app?
A rejection means Apple has identified a problem under the App Review Guidelines or another applicable review requirement. AI authorship is not itself the review criterion. Review the behavior and contents of the submitted build: a generated interface can look finished while authentication, a backend, an in-app purchase, or a key feature remains unavailable or misleading.

Apple’s App Review Guidelines state that developers are responsible for everything in an app, including ad networks, analytics services, and third-party SDKs. That responsibility applies whether code was written by a person, generated by a model, supplied by a builder, or added through a dependency.

What does App Store Guideline 2.1 mean?
2.1: App Completeness
The app must be complete enough for a reviewer to inspect and use. Submit a final build, test it on-device, make required services available, and remove placeholder content and obvious technical problems. Complete the metadata and ensure the URLs required by the app or listing work. If the app depends on an account, provide active demo credentials. If legal or security reasons prevent that, Apple’s guideline allows a full-featured built-in demo mode in the stated circumstances, with Apple’s prior approval.
Configured in-app purchases should be visible, current, and functional. If a configured item cannot be found or reviewed, explain why in the review notes. A feature that depends on a backend, an AI service, or an API key is not reviewable if that dependency is unavailable to the reviewer.
What to put in App Review notes
Apple’s complete-review instructions ask developers to explain the app’s concept, intended audience, business model, tested devices and operating-system versions, regional differences, and external services or tools used for core functionality. AI services are specifically included as an example of an external service to disclose. Make the route to non-obvious features clear, and provide working credentials and any required authentication codes.

For an AI-built app, describe the precise review path: where to sign in, which screen exposes the feature, what input to use, and whether the feature requires a live service. Notes help a reviewer reach and understand functionality; they do not substitute for making that functionality work.
What does Guideline 2.3 mean for AI-generated listings?
2.3: Accurate Metadata
The App Store listing must accurately represent the app customers receive. The description, privacy information, screenshots, previews, pricing, age rating, category, name, and keywords must be accurate and appropriate. Screenshots should show the app in use, not consist only of title art or a login screen. Tell App Review about new functionality and make it accessible. Hidden, dormant, or undocumented features can create a review problem.
Check every AI-generated description and screenshot against the live binary. A mock screen, template-generated privacy statement, or confident feature claim can be wrong even when the rest of the app works. For AI features, explain concretely what users provide, what the app returns, and which capabilities require payment; do not claim more than the app can do.

Can an app download AI-generated code?
2.5: Software Requirements
Guideline 2.5 covers how an app uses platform software and APIs. Apps must use public APIs for their intended purposes and remain compatible with the currently shipping operating system. In general, an app must be self-contained; it may not download, install, or execute code that introduces or changes app features or functionality. The guideline identifies limited exceptions, including certain educational apps that let students develop or test executable code under stated conditions.

Distinguish code generated during development and compiled into the submitted app from code fetched or generated at runtime. The guideline does not ban AI as a category, but runtime code, remote feature changes, or downloaded plugins may raise issues under 2.5.2. Evaluate the exact shipped behavior and any applicable exception, and explain relevant behavior to App Review. This is an interpretation of the guideline’s wording, not a determination about a particular app.
Guideline 2.5 also addresses matters such as background services, IPv6-only network operation, recording consent, and platform-specific implementation. Generated code does not make those requirements inapplicable: inspect the actual implementation against the requirements for the platforms and services your app uses.

Which payment rule applies to an AI-built app?
3.1: Payments
The payment rule turns on what the customer buys and where it is consumed, not on whether a checkout screen was generated by AI. Under the default rule in 3.1.1, digital features and functionality, subscriptions, game levels, premium content, and full versions generally use Apple In-App Purchase. Section 3.1.3 describes exceptions for certain apps and transactions, including reader apps, multiplatform services, enterprise services, real-time person-to-person services, and physical goods or services consumed outside the app.

Subscriptions must provide ongoing value and clearly explain what customers receive for the price. Do not treat external links as a universal workaround: Apple’s guideline text sets conditions that vary by transaction and storefront.

What does Guideline 5.1 require for privacy and permissions?
5.1: Privacy and data handling
Permission prompts must explain the actual use of protected information. Apple’s purpose-string guidance calls for a brief, complete sentence in active voice that names the feature or outcome enabled by the resource and explains how the app uses it. Use a separate purpose string for each protected resource. A generic promise of a better experience, or simply repeating a resource’s name, is not enough.

Review the final app’s permissions, data collection, and dependencies rather than only the screens produced by an AI tool. Apple holds developers responsible for third-party SDKs and libraries, including their access to protected resources. Inventory SDKs and API calls, confirm that privacy disclosures match actual collection and use, test each permission prompt, and remove a dependency or resource reference if there is no valid use.
What design, rights, and legal issues can cause rejection?
Guideline 4 and legal requirements
Apple’s rules also address design and legal compliance. An app needs a distinct identity and appropriate rights to its media, marks, and other protected material. Depending on the app and the countries or regions where it is distributed, regulated services may need relevant licenses or qualifications. Apple’s complete-review instructions identify examples including medical, finance, gambling, cryptocurrency, and third-party intellectual-property use, for which supporting documentation may be required.
AI-generated text, images, branding, or code do not by themselves establish ownership, permission, licensing, regulatory clearance, or factual accuracy. Identify third-party material and regulated claims, then provide the permissions or documentation that apply to the app and its distribution regions.
How do I fix an App Store rejection?
Apple sends a rejection message explaining how the submission violates the App Review Guidelines or another applicable review guideline. Developers can correspond with App Review in App Store Connect and attach screenshots or supporting documents. First map each stated issue to the affected behavior, metadata, dependency, or documentation; then choose the smallest valid resolution that addresses every issue.
- Information or clarification: Reply with a concise explanation and relevant evidence when the reviewer needs information to assess the submission.
- Metadata-only issue: Correct the metadata. Apple says the same build may be resubmitted after a metadata fix.
- Server-side or access issue: If the issue can be resolved by making a service or access path available, reply with the change and the steps to verify it; Apple says some such adjustments may be handled by replying rather than submitting a new build.
- Build or behavior issue: Fix the app and submit a corrected build when the problem is in the binary or its functionality.
Resolve all issues Apple identifies before resubmitting. Apple states a goal of reviewing 50% of submissions in less than 24 hours and 90% in less than 48 hours; the page does not state a publication date for those figures. They are goals, not a promised turnaround for an individual app. Documentation checks and complex or novel questions can take longer, so provide required information with the submission.
A practical pre-submission check
- Install and test the exact release build on-device; verify sign-in, core flows, and required backend or AI services.
- Prepare active reviewer credentials and authentication codes, or seek prior approval for an eligible full-featured demo mode.
- Make new and non-obvious features reachable, then describe the route and any external service in App Review notes.
- Compare the live app with its listing, screenshots, privacy disclosures, pricing, and purchase flow.
- Inspect APIs, runtime code behavior, SDKs, permissions, and purpose strings in the submitted app.
- Check payment exceptions and storefront conditions for the specific transaction, and gather rights or regulatory documents where applicable.
The useful unit of review is the shipped app, not the prompt or tool that produced it. Apple’s guidelines are a living document, and an app’s approval cannot be inferred from the fact that another AI-built app—or another version of the same app—was accepted.
