Anyone can generally register an available .si domain through a registrar, including individuals, foreign applicants and organizations. You do not need to be a Slovenian company. The main exceptions are that the name must meet the registry’s rules, and ARNES’s free registration service is limited to eligible organizations that also use other ARNES services.
Who can register a .si domain?
Register.si’s general process is through a registrar, and ARNES directs people who do not qualify for its own network services to use a registrar to register an available .si name. The current general route is therefore not limited to Slovenian businesses or organizations. [Register.si] [ARNES]

ARNES reports that registration was opened to natural persons and foreign legal and natural persons in 2008. That is historical context; today, individuals and foreign applicants should use the general registrar route unless they meet ARNES’s separate service criteria. [ARNES history]

What are the .si domain name requirements?
The name must be available and comply with Register.si’s naming rules. A name that looks valid in ordinary text may still be unavailable or reserved, so check the exact name with a registrar before ordering. [Register.si naming rules]
- It must not already be registered or reserved.
- It may contain only characters permitted by the registry.
- The domain label must be between 2 and 63 characters long.
- It must not start or end with a hyphen.
- It must not have two hyphens in the third and fourth positions.
How do you register a .si domain?
- Check the exact name. Search for it through a registrar and confirm it is neither taken nor reserved.
- Select a registrar. Use the registrar list linked from Register.si’s registration guidance. A registrar manages the domain for you and acts as the intermediary with the registry.
- Review the registrar’s terms. Prices and renewal terms are set by individual registrars, not established as one universal retail price by the registry. Check the initial and renewal prices, renewal reminders, DNS controls, any bundled hosting, support and transfer process.
- Submit the registration and keep your contact details accurate. In particular, use an email address you can access; Register.si warns that an incorrect or unreachable contact email may lead to deletion.
- Track the renewal date. Renewal is handled through your registrar and can be for up to five years. Ask that registrar how it sends expiry notices and set your own reminder as well.
Is a .si domain free through ARNES?
ARNES offers free .si registration and renewal to eligible organizations that also use other ARNES services. This is a narrower organizational service, not a general free option for every individual or business. Check ARNES’s current eligibility criteria before applying. [ARNES domain service]
Eligible organizations can submit the ARNES domain form by email to [email protected] or use the member portal if the organization user has the necessary permissions. ARNES handles renewal annually. Its pages describe reminder timing differently, so follow the current instructions in the renewal notice. [ARNES support]

| Registrar | Individuals, foreign applicants and organizations not using the ARNES free service | Set by the registrar; check its current registration and renewal prices | Choose a registrar from the Register.si list and order through it | Through the registrar; Register.si says renewal can be for up to five years |

What happens if you need to change or recover the domain?
Deletion and recovery
If a registrar requests deletion, the domain enters a 30-day quarantine. During that period it is inactive, so its website and email services stop. If the deletion was a mistake, contact the registrar to request restoration before quarantine ends. [Register.si]

To transfer the domain to a different registrar, obtain the EPP/authinfo password through the current registrar and give it to the new one. Register.si says the password expires when used or after 16 days, whichever comes first. [Register.si]
Changing the domain holder
A holder can transfer a domain to another holder unless its status prevents the change. The registrar handles the process. [Register.si]
Disputes over a name
Register.si provides an alternative domain dispute process for a party claiming a stronger right to a name. Registering a domain does not itself establish an industrial-property right such as a trademark; consider those rights separately if a name could conflict with someone else’s claim. [Register.si]
