No. Antivirus can detect and block many threats, but no clean scan proves a device is malware-free. Threats may be new, altered, concealed, or able to interfere with security tools. Keep antivirus enabled and updated, but treat it as one layer of protection—not a guarantee.
Why antivirus can miss malware
Antivirus products use different detection methods. Signature-based detection looks for patterns associated with known threats; behavior-based detection looks for suspicious actions. CISA recommends using current signature and behavior detection and quarantining malicious files, but that layered approach improves coverage rather than ensuring perfect detection. Threats can be unfamiliar or disguised
A threat that has not yet been recognized, or that changes how it appears or behaves, may not match what a scanner is looking for. Malware can also conceal code or use legitimate system tools in ways that blend into ordinary activity. A CISA advisory published May 24, 2023 describes actors using built-in tools to avoid some endpoint detection alerts.
Malware may target security tools
Some malware attempts to disable or evade defenses. In an alert published April 9, 2015, CISA said the AAEH malware could defeat antivirus products by blocking connections to internet security companies and preventing antivirus tools from running on infected machines. What a clean scan does—and does not—tell you
A clean scan means the scanner did not report a threat it detected during that scan. It does not establish that no malware is present: detection can depend on the scanner’s coverage, its current updates, and whether it can run and inspect the relevant files. CISA describes antivirus as protection against “most known viruses,” not every possible infection.
There is no universal detection-rate percentage that can establish how likely every antivirus product is to catch every infection. Results depend on the product, the threats tested, and the test’s date and methodology; a number without those details can mislead.

How to reduce risk and improve your chances of detection
- Keep software current. Install operating-system and application patches, and keep antivirus definitions and detection updates current. CISA recommends maintaining antivirus definitions and applying software patches.
- Check that protection is active. Make sure real-time protection is enabled, and review scan alerts instead of assuming the product is configured correctly.
- Use caution with files and links. Do not open suspicious attachments or run unexpected downloads just because a scan found nothing.
- Use additional monitoring at work. Organizations should layer endpoint protection with monitoring of alerts and scan results; endpoint detection and response (EDR) can provide additional visibility. CISA recommends anti-malware on workstations and routine review of scan results in its AA22-137A advisory.
- Prepare to recover files. Keep backups separate from everyday use where practical, and check that you can restore them. Backups help with recovery; they do not detect or remove malware. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide covers layered defenses and recovery planning.
What to do if you still suspect an infection
Do not treat a clean scan as a reason to ignore continuing warning signs. The right next steps depend on the device, what you observed, and whether work systems or accounts may be affected. Follow the device operating system’s official security guidance or contact qualified support; organizations should involve their IT or security team. CISA recommends examining detection systems and logs during ransomware investigations in its ransomware guidance.
