Yes—some Chromebooks run Android apps through Google Play, but support depends on both the Chromebook and the individual app. On the Chromebook, open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If that option is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. Even with Play Store access, a particular app may be unavailable or incompatible.
Check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
On your Chromebook, select the time area, then open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. Google’s Chromebook Help says, “If you can’t find this option, your Chromebook doesn’t work with Android apps.” You can also consult Google’s instructions for installing and using Android apps.

Google’s enterprise deployment guidance says all Chromebook models launched after 2019 support Android apps. That is broad platform guidance, not a guarantee for every individual device configuration or Android app; check the exact model and app rather than relying on the launch year alone.
Install an Android app from Google Play
- Install available ChromeOS updates.
- Select the time area, then open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Manage Google Play preferences.
- Select More and accept the terms to enable Google Play.
- Open the Play Store, search for the app, and select Install. Apps on your Android phone do not automatically appear on the Chromebook, so install them there separately.
If Play Store will not open or load, Google recommends restarting the Chromebook, checking the internet connection, and updating ChromeOS. Its Chromebook app instructions cover setup and basic troubleshooting.

Why an app may be unavailable or incompatible
Chromebook support and app support are separate checks. Google Play Help notes that “Not all Android apps work on Chromebooks.” A developer may restrict an app to other device types, or it may require hardware your Chromebook does not have; Google gives GPS as an example. A missing search result or a “Your device is not compatible with this version” message does not necessarily mean Play Store was set up incorrectly. See Google’s guidance for apps that cannot be downloaded on a Chromebook; for an app’s availability or requirements, contact its developer.
What using Android apps on a Chromebook is like
Windows and screen layout
Google documents phone, tablet, and custom resizable modes for newly downloaded Android apps. The available layout and how well it fits the Chromebook screen depend on the app.

Keyboard and mouse
Some games support keyboard and mouse key mapping, but that feature is not universal. Check the controls offered by the app rather than assuming every phone app will work well with a Chromebook keyboard or mouse.

Android apps can read and write files in the Downloads folder when granted storage access. Android privacy settings may not appear or behave exactly as they do on a phone. Turning off Google Play on the Chromebook erases Android app data and settings stored on that device.

School and work Chromebooks may be restricted
An administrator can disable Play Store access or limit which apps users may install. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace and Play Store is missing or an app cannot be installed, ask the administrator whether policy allows it. Google describes this restriction in its Chromebook apps guidance for work and school.
Consider extended updates before opting in
On eligible Chromebooks, opting into extended updates removes Android apps and Google Play and erases Android app data on the device. Declining the opt-in retains Android apps, but automatic updates will not continue. Check Google’s extended updates support information before choosing, especially if you rely on Android apps on an older Chromebook.

What to check before replacing a Chromebook
If Android apps are the reason for replacing a device, verify the exact Chromebook model and the specific app you need. Confirm that the app is available for that device, meets any hardware requirements, and has an interface and controls that suit your use. For a school or work device, also confirm that its administrator permits the app. Google’s enterprise guidance recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage for school deployment planning, but those figures are not a universal minimum for home users; app requirements vary. See Google’s Android app deployment guidelines for Chromebooks.
