Yes—an old CPU can still be safe to use. Age alone does not determine security. What matters is whether the exact computer can run a supported operating system that receives security updates, and whether its manufacturer still supports its firmware and drivers. If Windows on the PC is out of support and cannot be upgraded, it can keep working, but it is more exposed to security risks.
Why CPU age is not the whole security question
A processor does not become unsafe simply because it is old. The practical question is whether the whole PC—its CPU, other hardware, firmware, and drivers—can run an operating-system version that still receives security fixes. Windows 11 eligibility includes processor requirements, but a compatible CPU alone does not prove that a particular PC has current BIOS, microcode, chipset, or driver support.

Microsoft recommends checking the specific computer with PC Health Check or Windows Update. Treat the result as a check of Windows 11 eligibility, not as a guarantee that every device component remains supported by its manufacturer. For that, consult the PC maker’s support information for the exact model.

Check the installed Windows version and its support status
Support dates apply to specific Windows releases and editions. Find the version and edition installed on the PC, then compare them with Microsoft’s supported Windows client versions. Do not assume that a PC is current merely because it runs Windows 11: individual releases have their own servicing end dates.

Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says listed Windows 10 editions no longer receive security updates after that date. An unsupported Windows installation can continue to start and run, but Microsoft no longer provides software updates, including security updates, for that version. It is therefore more vulnerable to security risks and viruses.
Windows 10’s temporary security-update option
Eligible personal-use PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2 can enroll in Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Enrolled eligible devices can receive critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026. This is a temporary bridge, not a long-term support path.

Enrollment choices and availability vary by region. Microsoft describes options that may include syncing PC settings at no additional charge, redeeming Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time purchase of $30 USD plus applicable tax. Check the enrollment flow in the device’s Settings rather than assuming an option is available where you live. ESU applies to eligible enrolled devices; merely continuing to use Windows 10 does not enroll a PC or provide these updates.
Microsoft also cautions that antivirus software alone is not enough to replace regular operating-system security updates. Antivirus may help, but it does not supply missing Windows security fixes.

Choose a path based on the exact PC
| Option | What to verify | Security implication |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the existing PC | Confirm the exact PC meets current Windows requirements and that an appropriate upgrade is offered. Check the installed release’s servicing date. | An in-support Windows release can continue receiving protection when updates are installed. |
| Enroll in Windows 10 ESU | Confirm Windows 10 22H2 personal-use eligibility, regional terms, and successful enrollment. | Eligible enrolled devices receive critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026; this is temporary. |
| Replace the PC | Check the replacement’s precise Windows release, processor compatibility, and manufacturer support. | Microsoft recommends replacing a device that cannot meet requirements for a current supported Windows release. |
| Keep using unsupported Windows | Understand that the installed version no longer receives Microsoft security fixes. | The PC may still run, but it is more vulnerable. Antivirus does not restore missing OS patches. |
To reach a device-specific decision, gather the PC model, CPU model, Windows edition and version, and the manufacturer’s firmware and driver update history. Processor support lists can change; check the current list for the precise CPU and Windows release, and consult the device maker for model-specific support.

October 14, 2025, and October 13, 2026, are support milestones—not predictions that a PC will stop working or be compromised on those dates. The first marks the end of regular support for Windows 10 version 22H2; the second is the stated end date for consumer ESU updates for eligible enrolled devices. A computer may continue functioning after support ends, but it no longer receives the specified security protection.

Microsoft has not established a universal CPU-age cutoff or a numerical estimate of how much unsupported Windows raises an individual PC’s risk. A specific verdict depends on the computer’s hardware, installed Windows release, enrollment status where relevant, and vendor support.
