An external GPU (eGPU) can add graphics capacity to a compatible laptop, but the result depends on the laptop, connection, graphics hardware, game and display setup. The headline alone does not identify the add-on or provide a verified before-and-after test, so there is no basis for claiming a particular laptop gained a specific amount. Here is what an eGPU can do—and what to confirm before buying one.
What an eGPU does
An eGPU connects graphics hardware outside a laptop to provide graphics processing for supported workloads. It can be a way to add a desktop graphics card or use an external graphics dock while keeping the laptop as the host. The word “add-on” does not establish that this was the device behind the headline; the eGPU is a plausible interpretation, not a confirmed identification.

There are two different formats to consider: a modular enclosure that takes a separately purchased graphics card, and an integrated dock that includes its own graphics solution. Either way, the laptop must support external graphics over the connection being used.
Will an eGPU work with your laptop?
Do not assume that any USB-C port supports an eGPU. Check the exact laptop model’s specifications and manufacturer guidance for explicit external-graphics support, then compare those requirements with the enclosure or dock. HP cautions that “Not all laptops are compatible with external GPUs,” and recommends verifying the laptop’s specifications before connecting one (HP’s eGPU setup guide).

- 【Up Link & Down Link】Up link: Oculink 4i(PCIE4.0x4), Down Link: PCIEx16(PCIE4.0x4). Only Support Oculink.
- 【Power Supply】This DEG1 supports ATX and SFX standard power supplies, which provides flexible power supply solutions for mini chassis.
- 【Oculink Interfaces】Please kindly note the OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the machine needs to be turned off first.
- 【Follow-start Function】The follow-start function is only compatible with MINISFORUM Mini PCs, it requires the use of original wires.
- Note: The GPU is not included.
- Verify the host requirement: Check whether the laptop supports eGPUs through the specific port and connection standard required by the device. For example, Razer says the Core X V2 requires Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, or USB4 with external-graphics support; a USB-C connector alone is not proof of compatibility (Razer Core X V2 product page).
- Check software and operating-system requirements: Read the dock maker’s compatibility notes for your exact system. ASUS lists Windows 11 24H2 or later among the requirements for its ROG XG Mobile (2025), along with host compatibility requirements (ASUS ROG XG Mobile (2025)).
- Confirm what is included: An enclosure may not include the graphics card or power supply. Razer states that both are separate for the Core X V2, so the enclosure alone is not the complete cost of a working setup (Razer Core X V2 product page).
- Plan the display connection: Check the device’s display outputs and decide whether you will connect a monitor to the external graphics hardware or use the laptop’s own display. The reviewed performance result below should not be treated as a prediction for a different display route or system.
How much performance can you expect?
There is no established, broadly applicable average uplift for eGPUs in the available evidence. In Notebookcheck’s review of the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 5090 AI Box, the specific Thunderbolt 5 setup averaged around 40% improvement at 2160p compared with a laptop RTX 5090. Results varied across games, and the eGPU did not match a desktop RTX 5090. That is one high-end system and comparison—not a forecast for another laptop, graphics card, connection or game (Notebookcheck’s Aorus RTX 5090 AI Box review).
For a useful estimate, look for tests of the exact laptop and external GPU combination, in the games and resolution you care about. A result for one game or resolution should not be generalized to another. If comparable testing is unavailable, treat the likely gain as uncertain rather than budgeting around a headline percentage.

How the main eGPU formats differ
| Format or example | Graphics hardware | Connection and requirements | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modular enclosure: Razer Core X V2 | Desktop GPU sold separately; ATX power supply also sold separately, according to Razer. | Razer requires Thunderbolt 4/5 or USB4 with external-graphics support. | Whether the exact laptop supports eGPU use on that port, plus the GPU and power supply you will need. Source |
| Integrated graphics dock: ASUS ROG XG Mobile (2025) | ASUS lists up to an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU in the dock. | ASUS lists Thunderbolt 5 and Windows 11 24H2 or later; host compatibility requirements apply. | Whether your particular host meets ASUS’s compatibility requirements and whether the listed GPU configuration fits your needs. Source |
| Integrated graphics box reviewed: Gigabyte Aorus RTX 5090 AI Box | Reviewed with an RTX 5090 laptop GPU as the comparison. | The cited review tested a Thunderbolt 5 configuration. | Do not transfer its game-specific results to a different laptop or setup. Source |
These are different purchasing formats, not interchangeable guarantees of compatibility or performance. A modular enclosure gives you a separate GPU choice but also means sourcing the additional components. An integrated dock packages its graphics solution with dock features, but still has host and operating-system requirements.

When an eGPU may—or may not—make sense
It may suit you if
- Your laptop is explicitly compatible with the enclosure or dock.
- You want to keep using the laptop while adding external graphics capacity.
- You can confirm the full setup cost, including any separately purchased GPU and power supply.
- Tests for a similar system show a worthwhile improvement in your games and at your target resolution.
Look elsewhere if
- Your laptop’s eGPU support is unclear or its required connection is unavailable.
- You expect an external setup to perform exactly like a desktop graphics card in every game.
- The extra hardware, cabling or cost outweighs the benefit for your use.
Check before you buy
- Find the exact laptop model’s specifications. Look for explicit external-graphics support, not just the presence of USB-C.
- Match the connection and system requirements. Compare the laptop’s supported port and operating system with the enclosure or dock maker’s requirements.
- List every component and cost. Establish whether the GPU and power supply are included or separate, and account for any other hardware needed for your setup.
- Compare relevant performance tests. Prefer results for the same host, GPU, games, resolution and display arrangement; otherwise, regard performance as uncertain.
- Confirm the final configuration with the manufacturer. Compatibility can be specific to the host model, so check current product guidance before ordering.
