Yes, sometimes it can buy after you have authorized the task in advance—but that is different from buying with no permission at all. Whether an assistant asks you to confirm the final checkout depends on the service and how it is set up. OpenAI’s published ChatGPT Instant Checkout flow requires confirmation of order, shipping, and payment details; Amazon describes agentic shopping tasks that can run from an earlier instruction, such as buying an item if its price falls to a specified level.
What “without your approval” can mean
There are two different questions: can an assistant act without asking you again at the final step, and can it buy something you never authorized? A standing instruction or price-triggered task may allow a later purchase without a fresh prompt. That is still prior authorization. The examples described by OpenAI and Amazon show delegated purchasing, not a general ability to make arbitrary purchases without user direction.

Purchase capability alone does not tell you what permission was granted. Check the specific service’s authorization model and the instruction you gave it; approval behavior varies by product and setup.

How current shopping assistants describe purchases
ChatGPT Instant Checkout
In its September 29, 2025 announcement, OpenAI said shoppers can tap “Buy,” confirm the order, shipping, and payment details, and complete a purchase in ChatGPT. OpenAI described the flow as one where users explicitly confirm each step. The merchant handles order acceptance or rejection, payment processing through its existing provider, fulfillment, and support; ChatGPT passes information between the user and merchant. OpenAI also said payment tokens are authorized for specific amounts and merchants with user permission. OpenAI’s Instant Checkout announcement.

OpenAI’s developer documentation describes the underlying protocol: ChatGPT collects buyer, fulfillment, and payment information, then creates or updates a merchant checkout session and presents the merchant’s resulting state. The merchant validates the order, chooses fulfillment options, calculates and charges tax, assesses payment and risk signals on its own systems, and accepts or declines the order. In this protocol, a delegated payment request is one-time, has a maximum chargeable amount, and expires. These details apply to OpenAI’s protocol, not every AI shopping assistant. Amazon shopping agents
Amazon describes Rufus as able to shop agentically on a customer’s behalf. Its examples include “Buy this dress when it drops to $75” and “Order both pairs of headphones I browsed yesterday.” Those examples involve an instruction given in advance. Amazon also describes Buy for Me as completing purchases for products found both on and off Amazon. The examples do not establish what confirmation prompt or settings every current user sees, or how broadly either feature is available; check the live product for current availability and controls. What to check before delegating a purchase
Before setting up a purchase task, be precise about its scope. The following are practical checks, not a claim that every service provides each control:

- The maximum price or price trigger, and whether taxes, shipping, or other fees are included in any stated limit.
- Whether the instruction applies to one purchase or allows repeat orders.
- The delivery address and payment method to be used.
- How to cancel or revoke the instruction before it runs.
At checkout, verify the exact item and final price, including taxes and fees, along with shipping, availability, and applicable return or warranty terms. Merchants and platforms can limit what agents do
An assistant’s ability to submit a purchase does not guarantee that a retailer will accept it. In OpenAI’s documented flow, the merchant validates and decides whether to accept an order. Retailers can also set rules for automated access: Amazon’s seller-facing notice says a policy effective March 4, 2026 requires agents accessing Amazon Services to identify themselves as automated systems, comply with the Agent Policy, and stop accessing the service if Amazon requests it. In a separate statement on November 4, 2025, Amazon said third-party applications buying on customers’ behalf should operate openly and respect a service provider’s decision whether to participate. These are Amazon’s platform rules and stated position, not a universal legal standard for consumer consent.
