Yes. On supported Android phones and tablets, Google Gemini can place calls, compose and send messages, and perform selected device actions such as turning on Wi‑Fi or the flashlight. The result depends on which app handles the task, the permissions you grant, your default-app settings, whether Google is the default digital assistant, and whether you have enabled lock-screen use.
Gemini is not a universal remote control. Emergency calls should be made in the device’s Phone app, not through Gemini. Private requests can still require an unlock, and several messaging features—especially reading message history or handling media—are deliberately limited.

What Gemini can do on Android
Gemini’s Android integrations fall into four practical groups: calling through the Phone app, sending text messages through the default SMS app, calling or messaging through WhatsApp, and performing selected actions through Android Device assistance. Each group has its own access requirements and limits.

Making calls with Gemini
What it can call
Gemini can use Android’s calling app to call a saved contact, a business, or a telephone number. Natural requests include “Can you call them?” or a direct request naming the person or number. Gemini normally uses the last calling app used with that contact. If it uses the Phone integration, it uses the device’s default Phone app.

The calling feature requires an Android phone or tablet, an active mobile plan, the Gemini mobile app, and contact information that Gemini can match. The Google app must have Phone permission. Call Logs and Contacts permissions can improve matching and can expose contacts stored on the device that are not synchronized to your Google Account.
Choosing the phone integration
If Gemini chooses the wrong route, include @Phone in the request. You can also change the default phone application in Android’s default-app settings. The exact menu wording can vary by manufacturer, but it is generally under Settings, Apps, and Default apps.
Emergency calls are different
Google’s calling documentation gives a specific safety instruction: “Don’t use the Phone app in Gemini to call emergency services. Instead, use your device’s calling app directly to make an emergency call.” Open the device’s Phone app and dial the emergency number yourself. This avoids dependence on assistant permissions, app selection, connectivity, or a misunderstood contact request.

The documented Phone integration can start calls, but it cannot accept or reject incoming calls. Some requests may still be handled by Google Assistant rather than Gemini, depending on the assistant and device settings currently in use.

Sending SMS and WhatsApp messages
SMS through the default messaging app
Gemini can compose and send a text message through the phone’s default SMS application. A request such as Text Alex I’ll arrive at 6 PM can supply both the recipient and message. If Gemini does not select the messaging integration, use @Messages explicitly.
Setup requires an Android phone or tablet with an active mobile plan, a saved contact, and SMS permission for the Google app. The recipient’s name must be specific enough for Gemini to match the correct contact; review the recipient and wording before sending, particularly when several contacts have similar names.
SMS boundaries
Gemini’s documented Messages integration is for composing and sending. It cannot directly read or summarize the message history inside the messaging app. It also cannot create or message group chats through that integration, and it cannot read or reply to messages shown in notifications. Notification replies are a separate Device assistance capability and require notification access.

WhatsApp on Android
Gemini can call or send messages through WhatsApp on Android. The documented WhatsApp integration has narrower capabilities than a person using WhatsApp directly: it cannot read or summarize WhatsApp message history, send or read images, GIFs, or memes, or handle audio and video messages. For those formats, open WhatsApp and use its own controls.
Changing settings and controlling the phone
Default assistant requirement
For selected device settings and quick actions, Google must be set as the device’s default digital assistant app. Google’s Android Device assistance documentation states: “If you want Gemini to manage certain device settings and take certain quick device actions, set the Google app (which hosts Gemini) as your device’s default digital assistant app.”
On most phones, look under Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app, then select the Google app. Manufacturers can rename or relocate this menu.

Examples of supported actions
The documented examples include:
- Toggle Airplane mode, Battery Saver, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, Flashlight, NFC, and Wi‑Fi.
- Adjust volume.
- Take a photo or screenshot.
- Power off the device.
- Manage alarms and timers.
- Open apps and control media.
- Read and reply to Android notifications when notification access is enabled.
Google describes the list as “and more,” but support is not identical on every phone. A setting may be unavailable because of the manufacturer’s software, the user’s account type, language, region, or a permission that has not been granted.

Notification access is separate
Turning on Device assistance does not automatically give Gemini access to notifications. If you want it to read or reply to an incoming notification, grant notification access to the Google app in Android’s notification-access settings. Without that access, Gemini cannot perform notification-based reading or replies even if other device controls work.
Using Gemini while the phone is locked
Lock-screen assistance is an opt-in feature, not an automatic consequence of installing Gemini. In Gemini settings, enable the option to use Gemini without unlocking. A separate option controls whether calls and messages may be made without an unlock.
When enabled, lock-screen help can include calls or text responses, Maps information, selected reminders or notes, alarms, timers, media controls, and controls such as the flashlight and volume. A request involving personal information may still require unlocking. This prevents a person who picks up a locked phone from freely retrieving private account or message content.
Support also varies by device. Google says Gemini is available on most Android phone and tablet lock screens, while its Pixel Tablet instructions require the device to be unlocked before using Gemini. Some features have age requirements and are unavailable for supervised accounts.

Privacy, permissions, and data controls
What Connected Apps can process
When supported calling or messaging Connected Apps help with a request, Gemini mobile apps may process Gemini Apps activity where available, device calling and messaging logs, contact information, and device information and settings. Google says this information helps select an app and connect you with the right person.
Disconnecting integrations
You can disconnect supported calling and messaging apps from Gemini’s Connected Apps settings. This is useful if you want Gemini available for general questions but do not want it to access a particular communications app. Activity can be deleted in Gemini Apps Activity.
Keep Activity off is not a universal bypass
Google documents that mobile Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Device assistance Connected Apps can work when Keep Activity is off. However, a request that needs another Google service may fail or be limited. Disabling activity therefore changes the data path; it does not guarantee that every assistant action remains available.

Setup and troubleshooting checklist
If a call does not start
- Confirm the phone has an active mobile plan and that the contact or number is saved correctly.
- In Android’s app-permission settings, give the Google app Phone permission. Grant Contacts and, if appropriate, Call Logs access to improve matching.
- Check which application is the default Phone app and try the request again with
@Phone. - If the phone is locked, enable lock-screen calling in Gemini settings or unlock the device before retrying.
- For an emergency, stop using Gemini and place the call directly in the device’s Phone app.
If an SMS is not sent
- Verify the active mobile plan, the saved contact, and the default SMS application.
- Give the Google app SMS permission in Android settings.
- Use
@Messagesto select the Messages integration explicitly. - Check the recipient and message on screen before confirming, especially when contact names are similar.
- If you are trying to answer a notification or create a group chat, use the messaging app directly because those are outside the documented Messages integration.
If a setting will not change
- Set the Google app as the device’s default digital assistant under Android’s default-app settings.
- Confirm the setting is one of the controls supported on that device, such as Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, Flashlight, or Do Not Disturb.
- Grant notification access only if the task involves reading or replying to notifications.
- Unlock the phone if the request concerns private information or if the device does not support that action while locked.
Choosing the safest way to perform a task

What determines whether a command works
Before troubleshooting the wording of a request, check the underlying conditions: Android phone or tablet support, app availability, mobile service for calls and SMS, the correct default app, Google app permissions, default-assistant status for device controls, notification access for notification tasks, and lock-screen opt-in. Android version, device manufacturer, region, language, account type, and future Google changes can alter the exact behavior, so the labels and available switches on your phone are authoritative.
