Yes—if the agent’s tools and execution environment let it reach a file and perform deletion, it may be able to delete that file without asking first. Whether it must pause for approval depends on the product, tool and configuration. A sandbox limits where an agent can operate, but does not by itself disable deletion.
What determines whether an agent can delete a file?
An AI agent does not have one universal set of file permissions. Its practical abilities come from the tools it can call, the identity those tools use, and the files made available to its execution environment. If a tool can delete files and the agent can reach a target with sufficient access, deletion is possible.

That capability is separate from approval. A product or application may require a person to approve a sensitive action before the tool runs, but another configuration may let the action proceed. OpenAI’s guidance recommends pausing ambiguous or high-risk actions for explicit human approval before execution: Guardrails and human review.

Does a sandbox prevent file deletion?
No—not automatically. A sandbox is an isolation boundary: it limits the resources and systems an agent’s code can reach. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance says agent-generated code can access the files, credentials and network available to its environment: Sandbox security.

If the sandbox includes writable files and the available tools can delete them, those files may still be deleted. The useful question is not just whether the agent is sandboxed, but what the sandbox contains, what permissions it grants, and whether a separate approval check runs before a destructive tool call. OpenAI also describes sandbox execution boundaries and separating the control plane from the compute environment in its Sandbox Agents guidance.
Do agents always ask before deleting files?
No. Approval behavior depends on the product and setup; one product’s default should not be treated as a rule for all agents.

ChatGPT Workspace Agents
OpenAI’s Help Center says write actions for apps and connectors default to “Always ask” during an agent run. Other settings may be available depending on the app. This describes Workspace Agents, not every AI agent or integration: ChatGPT Workspace Agents for Enterprise and Business.
Responses API and Agents SDK applications
OpenAI’s API guidance says these applications do not automatically inherit Codex Auto-review. Developers need to implement review and enforcement in their own harness. In practice, that means an approval prompt is only a safeguard if the application actually checks the decision before executing the tool call. See Guardrails and human review.

How can you reduce the risk of unwanted deletion?
Use multiple controls rather than relying on a prompt instruction such as “don’t delete files.” OpenAI’s guidance on safety in building agents likewise treats tool approvals as one part of a layered safety design.
- Limit file access. Give the agent only the filesystem scope and identity permissions needed for its task. Keep unrelated files outside its environment.
- Use an isolated workspace. For file manipulation, separate the working environment from trusted control-plane functions such as approvals, authentication, audit logs and recovery state where practical.
- Check destructive tool calls. Before execution, inspect the proposed action, target and arguments. Require explicit human approval for destructive or unclear changes.
- Fail closed. If review is unavailable or times out, do not run the destructive action. Record both the approval decision and the execution result.
- Restrict other resources too. Limit credentials and network access to what the task requires; a file boundary alone does not limit access to other resources exposed to the agent.
How should you test an agent’s deletion safeguards?
There is no universal test procedure published in the cited guidance, but a cautious test follows from its recommendations about isolation and approvals. Use a restricted, disposable workspace rather than valuable or shared files.

- Create a disposable test directory containing files that are safe to remove, and ensure the agent’s identity cannot access unrelated files.
- Give the agent a task that would require a deletion, with the tool configured to require review for destructive actions.
- Confirm that the action pauses for approval before the deletion tool runs. Decline the request and check that the file remains.
- In a separate test, approve a deletion only within the disposable workspace and verify the recorded decision and result.
- Check that the agent cannot reach files outside its permitted scope, and that unavailable or timed-out review blocks the action.
Testing both the approval pause and the access boundary matters: a prompt can appear to work while the agent still has excessive filesystem access, and a narrow sandbox does not establish that an approval check is enforced.
