For ordinary home or small-office internet, a gateway or router must provide the route upstream and usually assign devices their local network addresses. An access point typically adds wireless access to that existing network rather than replacing its gateway.
What an access point can—and cannot—do on its own
An access point (AP) lets wireless devices connect to a wired or bridged network. A router or gateway routes traffic between networks and provides the path from a local network to the internet. Many residential wireless routers combine both functions; an ISP gateway may also combine a modem or optical network terminal (ONT).

Without a router or equivalent network service, an AP may still emit a Wi-Fi signal and allow devices to associate with it. That only confirms a wireless connection. Devices still need suitable network addressing and a route to reach other networks. A local-only, model-dependent setup—such as a direct connection to a local service or devices configured with static addresses—is different from ordinary internet access.

Ubiquiti makes the distinction for its products explicit: “You will not be able to connect a UniFi Access Point directly to the internet without a gateway/router (from Ubiquiti, your ISP, or another manufacturer), excluding the aforementioned integrated products.” This is product-specific guidance, but it illustrates why a standalone Wi-Fi broadcast should not be mistaken for an internet connection.

What happens to IP addresses and routing in AP mode?
In AP or bridge mode, a device passes wireless clients onto an existing network instead of acting as that network’s router. Routing and DHCP may therefore be disabled on the AP device. DHCP is the service that assigns network settings such as IP addresses; on a typical bridged network, the gateway’s DHCP service provides them to wireless clients through the AP.
Synology says its wireless AP mode cannot select routes and does not assign local-network IP addresses, and recommends using it with an existing ISP modem or router. MikroTik likewise describes an AP bridging clients’ DHCP requests to the router. These examples show why an AP in bridge mode is not generally a substitute for the gateway.

Add Wi-Fi to a network that already has a gateway
This is the ordinary use for a dedicated AP. Connect it to the existing network using the uplink method and port specified by its manufacturer. The gateway continues to handle routing and normally DHCP; the AP provides wireless access. Check whether the AP uses Ethernet, supports a wireless uplink, and requires a particular power source.
Broadcast Wi-Fi without a router or internet service
An AP may let nearby devices join its wireless network, depending on its model and configuration, but do not assume clients will receive normal network addresses or have internet access. A local-only connection may be possible when the devices and service are configured for it; the exact requirements are model-specific.

Reuse an old router as an access point
If the router offers a manufacturer-supported AP mode, use that mode and follow its instructions for the uplink port and management access. Otherwise, use only the model’s documented alternative. For certain models, TP-Link describes disabling DHCP to configure the device as an AP, but port behavior and the steps vary: some implementations repurpose or disable the WAN port. Do not assume every old router uses the same socket or configuration.
Does a standalone access point need a controller?
“Standalone” can mean that an AP can be configured without a centralized controller; it does not mean that the AP can provide internet routing without a gateway. TP-Link Omada documents basic setup through its app or a browser without an Omada Controller, while noting that some advanced features are unavailable. Ubiquiti also documents standalone configuration with limitations. Whether a controller is needed, and which features require one, depends on the product.

Check these details before buying or repurposing an AP
- Gateway: Is there already a router or ISP gateway to provide internet routing and DHCP?
- Uplink: Does the AP connect to the network by Ethernet or wireless uplink, and which port does the manufacturer specify?
- Power: What power method does the exact model support? Requirements differ, so do not assume every AP needs a separate PoE injector.
- Management: Can it be configured through an app or browser, or does it require a controller for the setup or features you need?
- Features: In AP mode, could gateway-dependent functions such as firewall, NAT, VPN, parental controls, QoS, or guest isolation be unavailable or changed?
- Purpose: Do you need only local wireless access, or do you need devices to reach the internet?
These checks matter because an AP complements an existing gateway in a typical internet-connected setup; its operating mode and feature set determine what else it can do.
