Yes. AI can generate frontend code for websites and web apps, including components and interfaces, and can help edit, test, debug, and explain existing code. But a generated page is a starting point, not proof of a working or production-ready product: you still need to give the system useful context, run the result, and verify its appearance and behavior.
What AI can do with frontend code
AI coding systems can turn a written specification into frontend markup, styles, and application code. They can also help with code completion, generate functions or code blocks, create tests, explain a codebase, and suggest fixes for problems. Google Cloud documents these capabilities for Gemini Code Assist, while OpenAI describes using its models to create and refine web interfaces.

That means AI can help whether you are starting a page from scratch or working inside an existing project. It can produce a first draft, implement a requested change, or help investigate an error. The result depends on what you ask for, what project information you provide, and how carefully you check the changes.

Yes. AI can generate React code, as well as frontend work in other frameworks or plain HTML and CSS. The relevant question is not only whether it can produce a component, but whether the code fits your project, follows its conventions, handles the required interactions, and remains maintainable when you need to change it.

Framework coverage and the ability to edit or repair code matter alongside one-shot generation. DesignBench, a 2025 benchmark, evaluates React, Vue, Angular, and vanilla HTML/CSS tasks across generation, editing, and repair. Its dataset contains 900 webpage samples across more than 11 topics, nine edit types, and six issue categories. Those figures describe the benchmark’s coverage—not the number of production websites AI can build or a success rate for real projects.
How to get a useful first implementation
- Describe the job, not just the style. State who the page is for, what it should help them do, which sections it needs, and what actions should work. “Build a modern website” leaves important design and behavior decisions open.
- Name the technical constraints. Specify the framework, relevant libraries, existing project conventions, and any requirements the implementation must meet. If the code belongs in an existing application, provide the relevant files or context rather than treating the task as a blank project.
- Show the intended visual direction. Supply design references or explain layout, hierarchy, spacing, and visual priorities. OpenAI’s frontend guidance also discusses using image understanding and image tools when visual references or assets matter.
- Ask for a focused first version. Request the implementation you need, then inspect it in the browser. Follow up with specific revisions—such as correcting a layout, clarifying a heading hierarchy, or changing an interaction—instead of asking vaguely for a “better” result.
- Test before relying on it. Check both the rendered page and the underlying behavior, then verify that changes integrate with the rest of your project. A plausible-looking answer can still contain errors.
Why a good-looking page is not the same as a finished product
Visual polish is only one part of frontend quality. A page can look convincing while its buttons do nothing, its layout breaks at different screen sizes, or its code conflicts with the application around it. Production use adds further requirements, including reliable behavior and fit with the project’s actual needs. A demo, an isolated component, a generated test, and a deployed application are different outcomes; success at one does not establish success at the others.

OpenAI’s March 2026 guidance says GPT-5.4 was trained with improved UI capabilities and describes its frontend work as more visually appealing, ambitious, and functionally complete. The same guidance warns that underspecified prompts can produce generic structure and weak visual hierarchy. These are vendor descriptions and recommendations, not independent evidence that any generated site is ready to ship.
Google Cloud similarly cautions that Gemini Code Assist can produce output that seems plausible but is factually incorrect, and recommends validating it before use. That is why browser inspection, behavior checks, and review of the code are part of the work—not optional polish after generation.

What the available performance claims do—and do not—show
In 2025, OpenAI reported that its testers preferred GPT-5 to o3 in 70% of its side-by-side frontend web-app comparisons. That is a company-reported preference for two specific models in a particular comparison. It is not a universal score for AI-written frontend code, a comparison of all available tools, or evidence that 70% of generated apps succeed in production. OpenAI also described the examples as “cherry-picked.”
DesignBench’s authors argue that earlier frontend benchmarks did not adequately cover modern frameworks or iterative editing and repair. Its broader task coverage is useful context for evaluating what a benchmark measures, but neither its sample count nor OpenAI’s preference result answers what share of frontend code AI can write or how often AI-generated applications are production-ready. The sources cited here establish no general statistic for either question.

How to judge an AI frontend tool
There is not enough comparable independent evidence here to rank current tools overall. When choosing or evaluating one, compare the capabilities that affect your actual workflow:

- Project and framework fit: Can it work with the framework and conventions your codebase uses?
- Editing as well as generation: Can it make targeted changes and help repair existing code, or does it mainly produce new snippets?
- Design direction: Can you provide useful visual references or assets and get control over the page’s structure and hierarchy?
- Verification support: Does your workflow let you inspect, test, debug, and review what it changes?
- Human review: How much checking and integration work will the task require from you?
Availability can also change. Google Cloud’s documentation records that, beginning June 18, 2026, Gemini Code Assist IDE Extensions and Gemini CLI stopped serving individual, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra tiers, which were directed to Antigravity and Antigravity CLI. Check Google’s current documentation for the availability that applies to your account and region before choosing a workflow.
