AI virtual try-on can show a plausible version of a garment on your photo or avatar, but that does not prove a particular size will fit in real life. A useful fit prediction needs information about both your body and the specific garment, plus an understanding of how its fabric, cut, and intended ease should feel. Treat the image as a styling aid; use item-specific sizing evidence to choose a size.
What does an AI virtual try-on image actually show?
Image-based try-on generates a picture of a person wearing a garment. Google describes a system that takes images of a person and a garment and uses generative AI to create that result, aiming to represent visual details such as drape, folds, cling, stretch, and wrinkles. That is a visualization, not a physical fitting or a validated size verdict. Google’s explanation of its virtual try-on approach

A convincing image can therefore answer questions such as “Does this color or style suit me?” better than “Will this size feel right?” A system may make a garment look neatly fitted without establishing whether the real item would be too tight, too loose, restrictive, or comfortable.
Why appearance and physical fit are different
The system needs information about you
A generic model, a photo, an avatar, and a body scan do not provide the same evidence. A fit-aware recommendation benefits from relevant body measurements; a rendered image can still be visually plausible without knowing those measurements. A 2025 Computer Graphics Forum paper notes that its method creates plausible images but cannot validate garment sizing without actual user body measurements. Computer Graphics Forum paper

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
It also needs information about the exact item
Your measurements alone cannot determine how a particular shirt or pair of trousers will fit. The system would also need reliable measurements or fit data for the specific garment and size, along with relevant properties such as stretch and cut. The intended silhouette matters too: a close fit and a deliberately relaxed fit are not the same sizing outcome.
Size labels do not mean the same thing everywhere
A label such as “M” is not a universal set of body or garment measurements. Zalando explains that sizing can vary by brand, category, cut, and market, while shoppers differ in body shape and fit preference. That makes a generic size label a weak basis for a precise fit prediction. Zalando on size and fit technology

How accurate is virtual try-on for clothing size?
There is no evidence here for one reliable accuracy percentage that applies to consumer virtual try-on tools generally. The available figures describe different things: a specific research model’s clothing-size classification, or retailer-reported results from particular systems and scopes. Neither is a universal measure of whether an AI-generated image predicts the way a garment will fit you.

| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 89.66% for an SVM model; 68.97% for a PCA-SVM model | Classification accuracy in a 2025 Scientific Reports study using anthropometric measurements from 3D body scans of 677 participants. The study also reports that 35.45% of participants did not align with a specific sizing category. Study and methods | The accuracy of a virtual try-on app, or a guarantee for another population, garment, or retailer. |
| Up to a 40% reduction in return rates | Zalando’s company-reported result from a four-week 2024 test of its virtual fitting room on selected Levi’s upper garments in 14 European countries. The company says the result is limited by the testing phase. Zalando’s pilot description | A fit-accuracy rate or an outcome that applies to all clothing, customers, or markets. |
| 8% of size-related returns prevented overall in 2025 | Zalando’s 2026 account of its broader portfolio of size and fit solutions, including product-level recommendations and flags, customer information, and its virtual fitting room. Zalando’s overview of its size and fit solutions | An effect attributable to the avatar feature alone, or a general prediction accuracy. |
The metrics are not interchangeable: a classifier’s performance on a study task, a change in return rates during a retailer pilot, and a generated image’s visual quality answer different questions.

What can retailer sizing tools add beyond the image?
Some retailers combine a visualization with other information that may help with size choice. Amazon says its Fashion features use profile and purchase information, summarize review feedback about fit by body area and fabric stretch, and standardize size-chart data. Zalando describes using product details, customer fit feedback and returns, body measurements, and fit preferences; its virtual fitting room uses measurements to create an avatar for comparing sizes. These are retailer-specific approaches, not universal guarantees. Amazon on AI shopping features Zalando on size and fit technology
When a shopping tool offers both a try-on image and a size suggestion, check which feature produced which result. An avatar can help you visualize appearance, while an item-specific recommendation may draw on measurements, size charts, or customer feedback. A recommendation is still guidance, not proof that the item will fit comfortably.

How to use virtual try-on when choosing a size
- Use the image for appearance. Judge color, styling, and the broad visual effect. Do not infer a confirmed size fit from a polished rendering.
- Measure yourself and consult the product’s chart. Compare your measurements with the chart for the specific item where possible; do not assume the same label means the same dimensions across brands.
- Look for item-specific fit feedback. Reviews that mention tightness, looseness, stretch, or particular body areas can add context that a generated image may not show. Retailer tools may summarize this information.
- Account for your preferred fit. Decide whether you want close, regular, or loose wear, and consider how the garment’s cut and stretch relate to that preference.
- Check what the recommendation is based on. Ask whether the tool uses your measurements and data about the exact garment and size, or only generates an image from photos. Also check whether any accuracy claim applies to this type of item, size range, body type, and market.
A soft measuring tape can help you get body measurements for comparison with a size chart. It cannot confirm how a specific fabric or cut will feel or drape.
Why a realistic result can still be misleading
Training data and generalization are part of the problem. The 2025 Computer Graphics Forum paper discusses how image-based methods trained on fashion imagery may reflect datasets featuring tall, slim models and may generalize poorly to average consumers. Visual plausibility across body shapes is not the same as validated sizing for those bodies. The paper’s discussion of fit limitations

Fit-aware try-on remains an active research question. A 2026 preprint argues that image-based systems can make garments look well fitted even when they should appear too large or too small, and introduces a dataset of more than 1.13 million try-on image triplets with body and garment measurements. That dataset is a research resource, not evidence that current consumer tools accurately predict fit. FIT research preprint
Independent, head-to-head validation of named consumer tools across garments, sizes, body types, and markets is not established by these sources. Without that evidence, no single percentage can responsibly describe how accurately AI try-on predicts physical fit for shoppers in general.
