Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Sometimes attackers turn a vulnerability into a weapon in less than a day—but that clock does not start at public disclosure, and it does not mean every flaw is exploited that quickly. For security teams, the practical test is whether detection can connect exploit attempts to endpoint, identity, and cloud activity, then help people investigate and respond before an intrusion escalates. The available evidence supports a rigorous way to evaluate those capabilities, not a ranking of AI security products.
How fast can attackers exploit a vulnerability after it becomes known?
A Pebblous analysis of the Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2026, published October 2, 2026, describes a median of less than 24 hours from a vulnerability’s discovery in the wild to its weaponization. That is a specific interval, not a universal countdown: its starting point is discovery in the wild, not the date a CVE is publicly disclosed, and the median does not mean every vulnerability is weaponized within a day.

The same analysis reproduces two separate remediation figures from Microsoft’s report. It gives a median range of 30–60 days for enterprise remediation of internet-exposed critical CVEs, and a Microsoft recommendation to address new vulnerabilities affecting internet-facing or identity systems within 72 hours. These figures describe different populations and kinds of measure: the remediation range is not an average for all vulnerabilities, and it should not be compared with the weaponization interval as though both clocks began together.
For a security team, the operational lesson is not to assume a fixed attacker deadline. It is to identify internet-exposed assets, understand which critical flaws affect them, and establish a response path that can prioritize urgent exposure. A vulnerability inventory alone may not show which users, automation, or connected systems can reach or trigger an affected asset.

Can an AI threat detection platform catch an exploit before it becomes a breach?
That depends on what the platform can observe, how it connects evidence, and what your team means by “catch.” An alert on an exploit attempt is not proof that an intrusion was prevented; conversely, activity after an attempted exploit may reveal compromise even when the initial event was missed. Evaluate the full detection and response chain rather than treating an AI label or a single alert as an outcome.
Recorded Future’s 2025 Cloud Threat Hunting and Defense Landscape offers useful defensive test areas: exposed public-facing services and exploit attempts, scripts and endpoint behavior, and activity across identity, cloud, and directory systems. It also describes exploitation of integrated third-party products and misconfiguration as relevant cloud entry paths. Those findings help shape scenarios, but the report is not a head-to-head test of AI detection products, and its threat ratings are the publisher’s structured assessments—not universal incidence statistics.

- Enterprise-grade prevention, detection, correlation and response from the perimeter to the endpoint with our Total Security Suite.
- Gain critical insights about network security, from anywhere and at any time, with WatchGuard Cloud.
- Built-in compliance reports, including PCI and HIPAA, mean one-click access to the data you need to ensure compliance requirements are met.
- Up to 18 Gbps firewall throughput. Turn on all additional security services and still see up to 2.4 Gbps throughput.
Ask whether the platform can bring related signals together: for example, suspicious activity against a public-facing service, unusual script or process behavior on a host, and an unexpected identity or cloud change. Then check whether the alert gives an analyst enough context to investigate and act. A system that reports disconnected events may leave the correlation and prioritization work to your staff.
What should we test when evaluating AI threat detection software?

| Test area | What to exercise | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Exploit behavior | Activity against exposed services and integrated third-party products, including suspicious web or edge behavior. | Whether the platform surfaces the activity and connects it to the affected asset and subsequent events. |
| Post-compromise visibility | Suspicious scripts and process behavior, credential access, lateral movement, and attempts to tamper with defenses. | Which behaviors are detected, how they are prioritized, and whether evidence can be examined in one investigation. |
| Cloud and identity context | Representative cloud and directory configurations, including unauthorized privilege elevation or token abuse scenarios. | Whether endpoint, cloud, identity, and directory events can be correlated into a useful incident view. |
| Alert quality and workload | Organization-specific labeled exercises, including expected benign activity as well as attack behavior. | Measure alert precision, investigation burden, and time to triage using your own definitions and records; no universal vendor rates are established by the cited sources. |
| Defensive realism | Exercises with active controls, detection and alerting enabled, and cloud and identity settings representative of your deployment. | Whether the platform produces usable evidence under the conditions in which your defenders actually work. |
| Remediation readiness | Exposed-asset inventory and a defined process for prioritizing and remediating affected systems. | Whether teams can identify ownership, exposure, and next actions on a timeline appropriate to the asset’s risk. |
Before running scenarios, decide what counts as a successful result. Record whether the platform generated a relevant alert, what evidence it included, how long it took an analyst to reach a defensible triage decision, and what response action was possible. Keep detection results separate from remediation results: the former concern recognizing and investigating activity; the latter concern whether the organization can reduce exposure.
Include the configurations that matter in your own estate, especially exposed services, third-party integrations, cloud permissions, and identity workflows. A result from a clean lab or a different telemetry setup may not predict what your team will see in production. Document the data sources available to the product during each exercise so missing visibility is not mistaken for a model failure—or a successful alert.

Do AI attack simulations prove that a detection platform works?
No. Pebblous describes a 32-step attacker evaluation in an emulated environment without active defenders, detection, or alerting penalties. Such an exercise can provide evidence about attacker-side capability under its stated conditions. It cannot establish whether a defensive platform would identify the activity, how many useful alerts it would produce, or whether defenders could stop a well-defended enterprise intrusion.

To evaluate the latter, enable representative controls and telemetry, involve the people who will triage alerts, and assess the resulting evidence and workload. Do not treat an attacker-only score or step count as a platform detection result.

What can the available evidence establish about product performance?
The cited material gives context for urgency and suggests useful evaluation conditions, but it does not provide an independent numerical comparison of AI threat detection platforms. It establishes no vendor detection rates, false-positive rates, or rankings, and it does not show that any named product passed or failed the test framework above. Microsoft telemetry as reproduced by Pebblous should not be generalized into a claim about every vulnerability or organization.
Accordingly, buyers should treat vendor claims as claims to validate, not substitutes for a controlled evaluation. Define scenarios around your exposure and telemetry, record consistent outcomes, and assess whether the platform helps your team move from signal to informed response. The decisive evidence is what it does in your environment under realistic defensive conditions—not whether a product is described as AI-powered.
