Can AI Search Engines Use Google Results? What Users Should Know

Some AI tools have a documented route to Google Search, but that does not mean every AI search engine uses Google's results. Learn what Google and OpenAI disclose, what citations mean, and why a Google ranking does not guarantee an AI citation.

Yes—some AI search tools can use Google Search results, but that does not mean every AI search engine does. Google documents a Search-grounding integration for Gemini developers, and its own AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google’s Search systems. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses third-party search providers and partner content, but its public documentation cited here does not name Google as one of those providers.

For users, the practical point is to check the sources behind an AI answer rather than assume where it came from—or treat a citation as proof that the answer is correct.

What does it mean for an AI search engine to use Google results?

The phrase can describe different arrangements. An AI product might connect to a documented Google search service, use Google’s index within Google’s own products, or potentially obtain search results through a provider or other arrangement. Those are not interchangeable, and evidence for one does not prove another.

  • Documented integration: Google’s Gemini API offers a Google Search grounding tool that developers can enable.
  • Google’s own AI Search features: AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google’s Search systems and index.
  • Independent services: Their retrieval sources may include their own crawlers or indexes, third-party search providers, partner content, or combinations. A specific provider should be named only when its operator documents it.

Using a supported integration is also different from scraping Google’s public results pages. The Gemini documentation describes a product integration; it does not establish that every AI service can collect or reuse Google’s results without restriction.

How Gemini can ground answers in Google Search

Google’s Gemini API documentation describes a workflow in which a developer sends a prompt with the google_search tool enabled. The model may decide search would help, generate one or more queries, process the results, and return a grounded response with citation annotations and search-result metadata.

This is a documented way for Gemini API applications to use Google Search. It should not be confused with a disclosure about the architecture of every AI search product.

How Google’s own AI Search features retrieve information

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on core Search ranking and quality systems and retrieve current pages from the Search index. Its guide to generative AI features in Search also describes query fan-out: a system can expand a user’s question into several related searches to gather a broader set of results.

Google Search Central puts the relationship this way: “The way Google Search finds and processes your pages remains the core of how our AI systems access your data.” For a page to be eligible for Google’s generative AI features, Google says it must be indexed and eligible to appear as a Search snippet. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve the page.

Does ChatGPT use Google Search?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search announcement says the product uses third-party search providers and content supplied by partners. Its ChatGPT Search help page describes issuing additional, more specific queries to other providers. The documentation cited here does not identify Google as a provider.

OpenAI also says website owners can allow OAI-SearchBot to help their content appear in ChatGPT summaries and snippets, as described in its publisher and developer FAQ. That explains one way content may be accessed for those purposes; it does not disclose a complete, fixed provider list or establish whether a Google result feed contributes to a particular query, region, or product mode.

Accordingly, the available official information supports saying that ChatGPT Search uses third-party providers and partner content—not that it specifically uses Google Search. Provider claims about other independent AI search services likewise need current, service-specific documentation.

What AI citations do—and do not—tell you

A citation gives you a route to inspect a source; it is not an independent guarantee that the answer is accurate or that the source supports every sentence around the link. Grounding documentation describes citation annotations, while OpenAI’s search help advises opening cited sources and checking their support and dates.

  1. Open the citation rather than relying on its title or snippet.
  2. Find the passage relevant to the claim and check whether it actually supports that claim.
  3. Check the source’s date and context, especially for changing information.
  4. For consequential decisions, compare more than one reliable source instead of treating a generated summary as the final authority.

What this means for websites and publishers

A high Google ranking does not guarantee that a page will appear in an AI answer. Google’s AI features have their own indexing and snippet-eligibility conditions, and other services describe separate retrieval requirements. OpenAI, for example, identifies OAI-SearchBot as relevant to inclusion in ChatGPT summaries and snippets. The conclusion that one platform’s inclusion does not guarantee another’s follows from these separate systems; it is not a promise about any individual page.

When assessing a service, look for published evidence about the parts that affect visibility and user trust:

  • Retrieval source: Does the operator identify a first-party index, crawler, named search provider, partner feed, or combination?
  • Freshness and query behavior: Is live search available, and does the service describe expanding a query into multiple searches?
  • Citations: Are sources linked, and can users connect them to particular claims and check them?
  • Publisher access: Are indexing or crawler access and robots controls described? Does the service say eligibility guarantees display?
  • Reuse terms: Do the terms specify limits on caching, storing, republishing, or collecting results and links for other purposes?

Do Google’s terms allow AI companies to reuse Search results?

There is no single answer here that can be inferred from the fact that a product uses search. Google’s Google Cloud Service Specific Terms dated 2026-05-04 define “Grounded Results” for the covered service as responses generated from an end-user prompt, optional customer context, and results from Google’s search engine. Those terms restrict covered customers’ caching, resale, analysis, training on, or other reuse of those results, and prohibit collecting links for other purposes such as building an index or locating pages to crawl or scrape.

These are terms for the specified Google Cloud service, not a universal legal ruling about every possible use of search results by every AI company. A product’s actual arrangement and applicable terms matter.
