Can AI Reconstruct What You’re Looking At From an fMRI Scan?

AI models can generate approximate reconstructions of images people viewed during fMRI experiments. The results are task-specific and do not show unrestricted access to thoughts.

Yes—but only in a narrow experimental sense. Researchers have used AI to generate approximate reconstructions of images people were viewing while their brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The result is not a recording of a private thought: it depends on a defined viewing task, data from the participant, and generative software that helps produce a plausible image.

How does AI turn an fMRI scan into an image?

fMRI measures changes in blood oxygenation associated with brain activity. In the visual-reconstruction experiments discussed here, participants viewed images while researchers recorded fMRI signals. A model was trained to associate an individual’s measured activity patterns with features related to the images. It then used those learned associations to generate an approximation.

Brain-Diffuser builds a reconstruction in two stages

Brain-Diffuser first maps fMRI signals to a representation in a variational autoencoder called VDVAE. That stage produces an initial image intended to capture low-level visual properties and overall layout. The system then predicts visual and text features and uses them to guide Versatile Diffusion, a latent diffusion model, toward a final image. The authors report that the method can preserve broad layout and semantic information, while fine details may differ. The Brain-Diffuser paper describes the approach.

That generative step matters: the output is a model-produced reconstruction informed by fMRI-derived features, not an unmediated image extracted from the brain. A plausible scene can convey the gist without matching the original image in every detail.

What did the Brain-Diffuser experiment measure?

The evaluation used the Natural Scenes Dataset, a 7-tesla fMRI dataset in which participants viewed images from COCO. Although the dataset described by the authors includes eight participants, the completed-trial analysis used four. Each image was shown for three seconds while the participant performed a recognition task.

Part of the study Images fMRI trials
Training set 8,859 24,980
Test set 982 2,770

These are study data-volume figures, not an accuracy score. There is no single accuracy percentage established here that applies to the broad claim that AI can reconstruct what someone sees; results depend on the task and the evaluation metric.

How is image retrieval different from reconstruction?

MindEye, a separate approach presented at NeurIPS 2023, includes both image retrieval and image reconstruction. It maps fMRI activity into latent spaces from pretrained models. Contrastive learning supports retrieval, while a diffusion prior supports reconstruction. The MindEye paper describes both tasks.

  • Retrieval: the system selects an image from a candidate set. Finding a close match in a database is not the same as generating a new image.
  • Reconstruction: the system generates an image from features predicted from the brain data. Its output need not be pixel-for-pixel identical to the viewed scene.

Does this mean AI can read your mind?

No. These visual results concern images participants saw during experiments. They do not demonstrate that a system can freely decode arbitrary thoughts, memories, dreams, or imagined scenes. Scientific American’s 2023 account notes that such models require extensive, high-quality fMRI data from the individual and are limited by the task for which they were trained. It also reports that whether a model trained on visual perception can reconstruct images a participant only imagines remains unclear. Scientific American’s report includes neuroscientist Shailee Jain’s assessment: “I don’t think we’re mind reading.”

Language-decoding research is a separate line of work, not evidence that the visual reconstruction system reads thoughts. A 2023 Nature Neuroscience study reported continuous-language reconstruction from fMRI semantic representations. Its authors explicitly state that “subject cooperation is required both to train and to apply the decoder.” The language-decoding paper describes that distinct task.

What are the privacy implications?

The demonstrations do not establish a covert or consumer-ready device that can scan anyone’s private thoughts. The specific visual systems depend on fMRI measurements, a defined experimental task, and participant-specific data. Those limits are important when interpreting claims about immediate real-world mind-reading.

They do not make privacy questions irrelevant. Jain told Scientific American, “I think the time to think about privacy and negative uses of this technology is now, even though we may not be at the stage where that could happen.” A 2024 review of “mind-reading” claims likewise cautions that research and media language can overstate what a particular decoding experiment establishes. The review is a useful guide to separating the headline metaphor from the demonstrated task.

  • AI has generated approximate images related to scenes people viewed while their brain activity was recorded with fMRI.
  • The systems learn associations from participant-specific data, then use image models—including generative models—to create outputs.
  • Reconstruction is not necessarily exact, and selecting a candidate image is a different task from generating one.
  • The visual experiments do not establish unrestricted decoding of imagined content or private thoughts.
